A river runs through it

Good morning everyone.
Wringing everything out from the last atmospheric river flowing through the Pacific Northwest. It was a doozy.
Otter Creek through the Farm was up 4 ft. and washed a lot of debris down and out into the Cowlitz River, itself at flood stage.
Another AR coming Wednesday and Thursday mixed with snow.
A couple of trees came down.
A particularly large one snapped off and flattened our little antiquish creekside bench and lays in a precarious position with one end down into the creek. Don't know how or if I'm going to cut it up or try to send it floating down to the river. Getting it past the beaver habitat is another issue.
It's definitely in a dangerous position where it would not be safe anywhere near it.
Fishermen and kids transit up and down the creek in shallower times, and although it runs through my property, it is regulated as a watershed resource and spawning habitat by the Fish and Wildlife people, so I don't know how that effects my liability.
There is a 150 ft. buffer zone on either side of the creek where I'm prohibited from altering or affecting it in any way, except removing invasive species. Even then I have to replace with native species.
Otherwise it is to remain au natural.
Hmmm. Gots some research to do.
Maybe I can get Fish and Wildlife to deal with it.
I guess I can deal with it mysteriously, you know, "If a tree falls in the forest" scenario.
And then there is the issue of having only a 18 in. chainsaw, where I will need at least a 3 ft. one.
Damn, time to go Stihl shopping.
So what's happening in your neck of the woods?
And where in the Hell did that saying come from anyway?
Thread is open.

the river is frozen here
.
had a high in the teens yesterday
single digits overnight
noticed folks out skating on a local
pond - fun stuff when living in freezer land.
Have a few inches of snow on the ground.
Kinda purty.
Sounds like the river tree is a dilemma.
Good luck solving it.
Time to restock the wood ..

I've got 2 cords of maple
just waiting for freezing temps, for a while now.
It has become a strategic supply now, in case of extended power failure.
Thanks for the post, stay warm.

65degF yesterday
here south of Denver, and Weather Underground says that it is going to be in the mid-60s straight through Christmas. I have new parsley shoots sprouting from the stumps of where the summer's crop was- this is just downright weird.
If we keep having this weather, I'll just put a transparent cover over the parsley and we'll have fresh all winter for the first time ever. However, I suspect that when this unusually-persistent high pressure ridge breaks down and the polar vortex finally comes our way, our temps will drop like a rock.
Our coldest weather is usually in late January, during the National Western Stock Show. We usually dip subzero during that time: we used to call it Stock Show weather, back when we were breeding and showing llamas. There's nothing like giving a large spitting critter a bath in -10degF weather (in order to show-groom them) to make you rethink your hobbies. (;-)
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
We have unusually warm temps
The recent forecast for a freezing vortex doesn't reach this far west. We are just going to miss it, God willing and the creek don't rise.
Wait, ......the creek did rise.
Oh noes!
Thanks for stopping by.

Here in ECFL, it is 65
and the nearest river is unfrozen and the usual polluted.
Can the beavers help out with the downed tree, or is it too far from them? I have been following this weather tragedy as I have visited your beautiful state @earthling1? Stay safe and dry! Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
The tree is 25 ft. long
and 3 ft thick. And getting it all the way into the creek is the problem.
I tried to wedge it in with an 8 ft 4x4, but it's not budging. The ground is too muddy, which makes the precariousness of the tree even more concerning.
Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll run it by the beavers and see what they say.
Whaaaa hahaha. I crack myself up.
Have a great day down there at the beach. Shirt sleeve weather, ehh?

Good morning e1. Dunno 'bout your tree
problem, but make sure that you remember that cutting up a downed one can easily be just as dangerous as felling a live one, suckers are perpetually unstable imho. Sorry about the bench, such things are wonderful to have.
Today is supposed to be catch-up day here, I have no pre-written OTs in reserve for next week and definitely should stockpile one or more, xmas cards are due out and I'm trying to build a cat house in the back yard for our favorite stray.
Stihl? Why not a Husquevarna? My last two saws, eons ago, were huskies, great saws.
Try to stay warm, safe and dry.
be well and have a good one
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Don't know why
I didn't think of a Husqvarna, I used to ride one back in the day.
My present saw is a Makita electric that always starts (as long as the batteries are charged) and works great for most of my chores around here. But I've got three big dead cedars that have to come down soon. I'll be needing a big powerful gas saw for that chore.
Once down, I can buck em with the Makita. And then slice em into fireplace size with the three footer.
But at 76, I'm getting too old for this shit.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Have a great day.

I'm envious of your creek.
Beavers! How cool is that!
Good luck with your tree. Three foot chainsaw is some serious cutting power. Be careful!
We're coming off a cold snap, been getting down in teens at night for the past few days but nice warm up today. Get to turn off the heat lamp in the well house after while.

We saw a family of otters
the last time we floated down the Cowlitz. Maybe they will re-populate Otter Creek some day soon.
But I don't know how they get along with beavers, I think they both eat Salmon fingerlings and spawning has just recently returned ( the last six years or so) after decades of none.
The entire watershed, which comes off of the south slope of Mt. Rainier, is slowly recovering from centuries of abuse and neglect.
Its recovery is coming along nicely, but I fear this current Administration. There is already plans for a treated sewage sludge composting facility up on the prairie-like shelf above us.
We are battling it fiercely, but there is big Tacoma money behind it. They have already ringed the property with a very expensive fence totally overkill for an existing tree farm.
I can see the writing is on the fence. We may not be able to stop this.
Thanks for stopping by and the essay today.

Beavers and otters should get along well together.
Beavers are herbivores and otters are strictly carnivores so no competition there and the beavers are outstanding at improving natural environments with their damns. And their underwater food caches make excellent fish habitats. Otters are great travelers. They'll likely venture up your creek in their wanderings one of these day.

Good afternoon, e1!
Good grief, friend!
The authority overseeing the habitat should have some tree removal services on contract to remove the tree. I also want to say the loss of the bench is sad. They don't make 'em like they used to, so replacing it with something similar is gonna be a steep climb.
It dropped to 28 deg. Monday night, but is warming back up until Thursday.
We had no damage to plumbing, and the roads didn't ice over, so it was no big deal for us.
Meanwhile, stay high and dry, and at least the sound of a rushing creek is so cool. I try to get down to the creek which forms the border to my acreage after a rain just so I can hear it rushing to the lake.Enjoy your day and many thanks for the OT, friend!

The adventures of a land owner
Generally call a professional to fell trees larger than my Oregon self-sharping will handle. Do not want to find out there is not the upper body strength to handle a potential kickback situation with a larger saw. Then finish the clean-up myself. Save myself a lot of ax work by utilizing the smaller branches for kindling or for a quick burst of heat to warm the chimney and midsize branches substitute for split pieces.
The slick mud of the coastal forest can be pretty dangerous for timber work, might leave it alone until the ground dries out. Give you some time to check out your options. Maybe an experienced tree feller could at least give an opinion on ways the tree may be inclined to fall intentionally with a little assistance or unintentionally.
For those unfamiliar with kickback.
Here is how he handled a 52" Tree vs. 20" Chainsaw Bar. Once it was on the ground.
