Correction & Apology re: NY Voting Hours
On April 14th I posted a story that stated the voting hours for many people living in New York state had been "cut by six hours" if they lived in a county outside NYC, its suburbs and/or Erie County.
While it is true that voters in those other counties will have six less hours in which to cast their votes in the New York Primary on Tuesday, it was misleading of me to say that those hours had been cut, or to imply that this was something new for this election cycle.
The simple fact is that all primary elections held in New York have, in effect, suppressed the vote of people who live outside downstate New York (and Buffalo) by limiting the hours the polls are open for decades.
The law is a peculiarity that vexes early-rising voters and elections boards alike, not to mention reinforces stereotypes of downstate superiority.
"The varying hours of operating for polling places strike at the heart of one's voting rights," state Supreme Court Justice Lawrence Kahn wrote in finding the law unconstitutional in 1982. "A farmer in his pickup truck is entitled to the same opportunity to vote in a primary as a subway commuter."
Kahn, who is now a federal judge, was right. That hasn't mattered for years, though, because he was reversed on appeal and the state's highest court upheld that extending voting hours for some New Yorkers and not others was "reasonable."
Unfortunately, Justice Kahn's decision was overruled. And ever since then, this separate and unequal treatment of voters simply on the basis of where they live has continued to exist. Welcome to New York, a state just as politically corrupt as Illinois or New Jersey, if not moreso.
Nonetheless, I let my umbrage at obvious inequity of allowing some voters more hours to vote than others get the better of my judgment. I'm sorry. That was wrong of me. And I should have corrected my mistake sooner. Again, the errors in that post are mine alone and I accept full responsibility for it.
I'm not a journalist, but I should have done my homework on this matter. I can only ask your forgiveness for this mistake, though I cannot and do not expect those of you who were misled in any way by my story to give it to me.
Aside for the correction and apology herein, what I do wish to impress upon everyone in states yet to hold their primaries, especially those in New York, is to make sure you know what the polling hours are where you live and what election laws may apply that could effect you ability to cast your vote. Call your local election boards, or look them up online, to find out where your polling place will be, how long it will be open on election day, the status of your voter registration, and if any ID will be required to vote in your state.
For voters in New York state that means that, unless you live in New York City or the counties of Erie, Putnam, Orange, Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland and Westchester (where the polls open at 6 A.M.), your polling place will not be open until NOON on Tuesday April 19th.
In addition, New Yorkers who live in counties in which the polls do not open until Noon, should be prepared for possible delays due to overcrowding. Hopefully it won't come anywhere near what we witnessed in Arizona earlier this year, but the higher the turnout, the likelier you may have to wait in line to cast your vote.
Again, my deepest and sincerest apology to all for the poor judgment I displayed in my earlier, incorrect story regarding this matter posted here on April 14th.

you helped
I'm sure folks appreciate the information. Isn't it interesting how the state level party suppresses votes... and then we holler about the rethugs. Hell, the corrupt corporate Democrats are as bad or worse. We have got to clean house if Bernie wins. If he doesn't, I think we need the third party.

To me, you are more of a true journalist than almost anyone employed by our lame-stream media. I'll read your stuff any day of the week. So there.

Yup
I'm pretty sure I remember the question being alluded to in the original post, "Has it always been this way?" IIRC, that got talked about in the comments, though I don't know if that question was definitively answered. But I think everyone reading kind of understood that it was not done deliberately just in this cycle. Agreed, Pat!

Bush v Gore probably changed that
it's likely that you could get that case re-argued given the SC new ruling there.
The Ithaca Bernie office has gone so far
as to post voting hours signs (someone paid for that, out-of-pocket, with runners) at every polling place in Tompkins county. While I was there, after canvassing we were discussing whether to do the same thing in adjacent counties. But hierarchy is still done by county, even for Bernie, although outer counties probably do not have the organization.
Some people may do this on their own. We planned signage at major intersections in/out of Ithaca to remind voters: Tuesday, noon to nine.
We are doing this bottom-up. Many dedicated people, all ages, we are just normal folks. #feelthebern #bernieorbust

Fingers crossed, but feet on the ground, today
Steven D. There are many earnest Bernie supporters in NY, as you know. We understand hierarchy, structure and when to break out for people-powered things that may surpass Organization. We can do this if we really try!

Just curious,
in 1972 the county Democratic Party (LaPorte, Indiana) refused to allow me to put up a "McGovern for President" poster in county Democratic headquarters! The McGovern-Fraser Commission had just small d democratized the large D Democratic Party. The powers that had been weren't nearly as powerful as they'd been, and they took it out on the "perpetrator" by letting him fall on his face in the election.
Penny wise and pound foolish to be sure.
I'm wondering if you're encountering anything analogous in upstate? Are the good ole boys and gals of the local party machinery holding for the establishment?

Corrections are the immune system of effective journalism. Thanks for the update, and you are correct, just because this irregularity isn't new doesn't make it right.
Slightly OT, but
Am I allowed to wear my Bernie shirt into my polling place in NY? I saw something on FB that indicated otherwise. Anybody know?
Thank you!
PS - How do I know when I get a reply to a comment I've made?
Are you a poll watcher or election official? If YES, then NO.
For now, follow the thread, look for new comments on the sidebar, and guess if the comment applies to you. (No snark)

From the NYCLU:
"Can I wear a political t-shirt or button to the polls?
The answer to this question has not been clearly resolved. But to be safe and avoid problems, we recommend that you wear a coat over your t-shirt and put political buttons in your pocket while at your polling place."

So long, and thanks for all the fish
Yeah
some voters in upstate today were VERY surprised that their normal polling hours were going to have to change since they normally vote before work. Not only is voting day NOT a public holiday a horrible disenfranchisement of voters rights, to push back voting to NOON is entirely, absolutely unacceptable.
It isn't like it is going to be record turnout and they reduced the voting hour availability by 50 FUCKING PERCENT!!!
If you do not understand that being part of the "establishment" is a slur in the minds of 99% of the U.S. population then you are completely out of touch and probably are one.
Well they have been doing it forever it seems
I always voted after work, so I never knew.

I posted your earlier post to New York State
For Bernie facebook page and got comments saying that they'd always been able to vote starting at 6am. Not sure if those folks read which counties were open the full day though. Others said there polling locations had been cut from 3 to 1. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out. Regardless, I think turnout will overwhelm most polling places. #Bernie2016

That is worse. It means NY primaries have been shams for decades
And we have the nerve to lecture other countries about democracies and voting standards.

But I wouldn't worry about your mistake too much. It was cleared up pretty quickly in the comments as I remember.

Psst... Hey New York, there's this thing called
the United States Post Office. You can put mail into it, all sorts of mail... things like voting ballots.
You're welcome, The State of Oregon.
((((((Steven))))))))) Thanks for the clarification that New York screws voters not just this election but all the time.
