The theme song of the 1988 Seoul Olympics was "Hand in Hand" (we go over the wall). Simultaneously, it referred to the iron curtain and the DMZ. The preparation for the Olympics was organized by the number two man in the Chun Doo-won dictatorship, No Tae-woo, who then became president after the first "free" elections. It was a thrilling hope at the time.
By the same token, those that thought a peace dividend was on the way after the Berlin wall fell were naive. I knew the great power politics would continue. Because I was trained to be a historian, immersed in realpolitik as well as the cold war, I never thought that the UK and US would allow Russia into a new relationship with Europe or the rest of the world. After 911, I told people that the US attacks in Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc., represented the US aggressively taking advantage of the collapse of the USSR, to dismantle Russia's former client states. Naturally this was dismissed as a conspiracy theory that only a fool would believe. It was clear in 1988 the South Korean strategy was to encourage the liberalization of the Warsaw Pact, which was at hand, and their hope it would lead to a similar change in relations with North Korea.
It was such a hopeful time...

Good morning Cap'n Q, 60 something at 6 am and headed
for 80+ per the weather wallahs, means well over 80 to 90+ in our yard. Lucky me will be nuking leftovers, both tonight (Sunday's) and tomorrow (last night's pizza). So far I've cooked all week on the grill, including the pizza, which helps keep the house cool.

To those unaware, we have some of the highest utility rates in the nation (#2, I think, after Hawaii) from out local utility, PG&E, a so-called "regulated utility" that could serve as a perfect example of regulatory capture. They are famous for exploding gas pipelines, deferred maintenance, unintentional blackouts, intentional "safety" blackouts, forest fires and brush fires, and ever rising rates. So I'll now get a $5 as is cinco dolares rate cut (or so), but, since I'm grid-tied solar, I will see a similar reduction in the credit I get for my production. I can say with certainty that this won't reduce the gratuitous $10 per month minimum monthly electricity charge they imposed on we solar types to prevent us from even breaking even, let alone benefitting from any overproduction on our part. So yesterday 2 of my open c99p tabs were timed out by cloudflare, one reported as post San Jose which was allegedly working fine and one from somewhere else I've never heard of. This cloudflare isn't even a service provider, it is an annoyance masquerading as a sekuritah service, which is perhaps keeping us secure by interrupting our signals??

Vaccines are just like slavery! Hey, I got to have measles, mumps, and chicken pox as a kid (all in a single 2-week period, by the way, and it damned near killed me), and I sucked my Salk polio vaccine out of a sugar cube. Why would I deny anyone else the pleasure of having all of those diseases? It'll be great to have all those nifty childhood diseases come roaring back, won't it? Freedom!
Note: this is specifically not about the Covid debacle. This is about overturning well-proven and well-tested science, and about abandoning well proven public-health related medicine. I spent 2 days at the Great Wall of China, one with a tour group, another with a private guide.
At the time it was constructed, China was in less danger from invaders than rebellion. The Emperor spent almost all of his time collecting concubines, and the people were grumbling. He decided a wall built by the young men and brightest engineers would be too busy to overthrow him. Plus, he would know where they were.
The Wall looks different in pictures that what it is. A fighting force running up the stairs with spear and shield would be screwed, as each step is a different height, depth, and width. Occasionally, my climbs required going on all fours to go from one to another. The result of The Wall was to keep the population in. It did.
The Iron Curtain, an insanely barbed wire fence I observed in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland, was a "keep in". Our Wall here will do more than keep "them "out, us in and busy. It will kill species of critters die off, the ones that migrate from New Mexico to Mexico, and vice versa.
