Silver Lining

open thread_0.jpg

Been a busy holiday weekend. Didn't get a chance to read and respond to multiple posts on Saturday or Sunday.
So I'll riff off what I read yesterday, Monday.
Interesting bits and pieces from OTC. On the silver thing in comments I added some suggestions. In case no one caught that, I spoke about buying pre-1964 silver coins as they are 90% silver and still have melt value.
I picked up a couple of $100 face value bags back when silver was $24 an oz for $2200 iirc.
The thing about precious metals in a catastrophic collapse is it's increased value. You could hardly use an American Eagle gold coin, say 1 oz, for everyday groceries or gas or even utilities as its value right now is $3500 ea.
Old silver coins are perfect for small marketplaces as everyone knows they have a fixed value.
Such as a silver dollar is worth 90% of $40 ( the present price of 1 oz of silver), or about $36 +/-. Now we are talking about a bag of groceries or some gas in your tank. A silver quarter would be worth about $8.
A latte.
In 1963 a silver quarter bought me a gallon of gas. Today, that same quarter would buy me almost 2 gallons of gas. Prices are not going up, the dollar is sinking.
As long as one could read the date on the coin, it would be a set value.
Of course, a mint condition uncirculated silver coin would possibly be worth a premium, but not necessarily.
In desperate times even they may sell for scrap prices.
Lots of variables here as hyperinflation could set in, making something like a gallon of milk go for $50, or over 10 times what it goes for today. But all things considered equal, everything would go up by a factor of 10, including gold and silver.
So at $400 an oz, you would get change back for that silver quarter buying a gallon of milk.
So, even though these are back of the napkin computations, the trend is clear. The greenback is collapsing in value.
Thread is open. What are you stashing?

back when still working, knowing the dollar was losing
it's value. Got about 15 pounds to 20 pounds of the stuff, 99 % pure.
Would buy more, but don't have the scratch anymore.

Thanks for the OT!

At this point gold rounds are more legacy items to be left to heirs.
And gold rounds (coins) are much more likely to be counterfeited ($3500 a pop) rather than silver rounds ($40). And what fool would try to counterfeit pre-1964 coins? How would one fake that patina?
Thanks for stopping by.

bail-in provisions, safe deposit boxes are accessible to the Too Big To Fail Banksters in the event of an economic collapse.
"Safe" deposit my ass!
A simple false bottom in a silverware drawer could hold 75+ silver American Eagles. In a wall or ductwork, attic or under floor.
If you have pre-1964 coins, bury 'em. What's the worst that could happen, they'd tarnish?
Haven't heard from Granma for a little while. I can check for her last comment just to see how long it's been. I think I have her number or email in the members log. Her address too. Somewhere here in the Portland Oregon area.
IIRC.
I want to be careful not to intrude though.
Thanks for the post.

Granma lives in the same mobile home park as earthling2's Mom. Got a call in to her just to see if she knows her.
Like I said, don't want to intrude, but what's a little neighborly welfare check.
Besides, both are great people who have many things in common.

I received an email that was a bit suspicious. From Granma. I responded, just to see, and sure enough, the hacker wanted me to buy an Amazon card for her to send to a friend because she was having a hard time ordering. Just as I received that email, I got a text from Granma warning me of someone claiming to be her.
Granma is busy with g'kids and getting back to normal from her past surgeries.
I am sure she will pop in eventually.

@on the cusp

so I e-mailed a response direct to her old e-mail and not the "reply to" that's in the phony e-mail and haven't heard a thing, so I figured phony, but decided to ask around anyway. Thanks Wink
