It is a portable keyboard that is sort-of related to the harpsichord, sonically- it uses a string for sound generation, unlike the tuning forks/tines in a Fender Rhodes electric piano, but it actuates the string by hitting it with a hard plastic actuator, rather than hitting it with a soft felt hammer like a piano. As as result, it is a much brighter and very percussive sound, rich in overtones (especially when played hard), and was perfect for funk. Think of the naked keyboard intro to Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" for a well-known example...

.
saw mention of it but not familiar
with that particular instrument.
cheers
