Saturday Open Thread - 7/12/25: Odds and Ends
Words my Grandpa taught me: cattywhompus (something crooked, out of alignment, leaning), epizudies (a health condition named epizuda), whomperjawed (swollen,broken, or crooked jaw), snit fit (tantrum).
He got bitten by a copperhead on his left calf. I got bitten by a copperhead on my left foot.
Neither one of us was askeert, so it is a family tradition. His bite left a black spot. Mine didn't.
An associate was coughing, having trouble breathing, feverish, fatigued, and the dr. gave her antibiotics and steroids. 5 days later, it was worse, so the dr. swabbed her nose, gave her 3 hours of IV infusions of antibiotics and steroids.
Two days after the infusions and doses of the second round of antibiotics and steroids, the dr. called her, said the lab tests showed she had parainfluenza.
What the dr. didn't say was that neither antibiotics nor steroids are effective in treating anything but bacterial infection. The dr. didn't say the antibiotics and steroids had wrecked my associate's immune system. The dr. did not recommend anything. Not even to just tough it out.
The associate now has a yeast infection in her throat.
Said associate started on ivermectin after the lab test news, improved in 24 hours, felt normal in 48 hours, and will continue taking ivermetin until the yeast infection is gone.
And this is normal. All perfectly normal.
And Epstein committed suicide.
Birds, deer, rabbits, tiny anoles, but no snakes. It's the little things!

Just want you to know I will be speaking with the police officer about snoopydawg's death this afternoon, in the event the requisite investigations are done, and the family contacted.

A foggy one here, but it kept Trade Day relatively cool.
Hope the Sam saga is progressing well.
I've fortunately never been bitten by a copperhead. I stepped on one years ago in the Bankhead. He jumped one way and I the other. Usually they are more aggressive but it was probably young...I was at the time. Used to see copperheads at the old picking shed when leaving. They like to hunt at night. We see plenty of rat snakes and corn snakes...and rattlers on occasion.

Pet travel services cost thousands of dollars. Well, I did some research about pet cargo services, and American Airlines has one. AA also flies from SLC to IAH.
Several problems arise: proof of spaying, proof of rabies vax, vet's health certificate, and tags.
The Dogs must be in a crate. The ticket price is based upon total weight of crate and dog when weighed at the airport.
I do not know which vet in Ogden used. How do I get my hands on required proof of vax? Some spaying scars are undetectable. How do I get her health certificate when there is no vet onsite at the shelter. How do I get a crate to the shelter for Sam? How do I make the payment at the airport?
I either get some answers from the shelter, or we will just go get her.
It is a 22 hr. drive. It is a 13.5 hr drive to Colorado. We stay overnight in Amarillo going and coming to get some rest. I am pretty sure the hotel we stay at allows pets. I think I can re-schedule some court appearances and take off for a few days. With luck, I can get in touch with the shelter today, as well as the police. I can find a pet friendly hotel in Ogden.

If you can take it, the drive to get her seems the best option. I max out at about 6-7 hours on the road, so that drive would take me three days each way. Another option might be to fly and rent a car that you could return back near your home. At least it would eliminate one full road trip.

The problems of flying the dog here start from the get go by being unable to gain access to snoopy's home and her typical paperwork and stored documents. It is possible she had a will and other estate planning documents prepared that include directives for the dog. I have no access to Sam's registration papers to clue me in on her age. After sleeping on it, she is 4 yrs old, more or less.
JtC's parents died pretty young, mine died in their 90s. He is relieved that he only has to stay love and take care of her for 6 or 7 years. Unless some disgruntled litigant shoots me, I am sure I can see her out of this world.
We can drive 8 hours a day, more if we take turns at the wheel. I do not have a case on the docket until the 17th. Even that case could be moved, since yesterday I sent opposing counsel numerous sex videos starring his client, her arrest record, a lb. of pot in her home within reach of the 3 yr old girl, and a text message where she brags about having sex in front of her child. I expect a deal to be cut on that case.
On a happy note, a client brought me some homemade ice cream for a snack, and sprayed the red wasps and removed the nest from the front porch of the office. He left the spray can with me. Another client brought me a tangerine tree! We are trying to decide the best place to plant it. It's the little things, friend.

Regarding snakes, we've got them down here. Let's see: water moccasins, coral snakes, cottonmouths, rattlers, and god knows what else in the freed-from-enclosure-by-hurricane exotics. It's common knowledge not to play around in waterlogged areas after a storm strike. Why? Electrocution by downed power lines and running into a poisonous snake. Funsies. Rec'd!!

Years ago, in a child custody battle, the Dad had become fascinated with exotic snakes. He allowed his Python to slither about his house with a small child present. My client won custody. The presiding judge was not a fan of snakes.

Speaking of pythons and other large snakes like boas, one of the funniest (to me) tourist videos involved a battle to the death between a full grown python and a full grown bull gator. This was in the Everglades. The snake was hungry and figured wrapping itself around that gator would be easy dinner. Wrong! The gator positioned its head and watched the snake's head. WHAM! The gator lashed out, mouth wide open, and decapitated the idiot snake. Man, this video went viral and we Floridians died laughing. Of course, we were rooting for our Florida Alligator.
Exotic snakes are just one of many pollutants seriously threatening the Everglades. Don't get me started about the biped ones!

The 50% "tariff" on Brazil Trump said in clear language was because he was pissed off about Bolsonaro being prosecuted. What does that have to do with economics? We have a surplus trade with Brazil! Maybe a prosecution right here might be a good idea.
Meanwhile, we plebes will be paying more for coffee, orange juice, and copper. WTF did we have to do with Bolsonaro's prosecution except to pay the prices for Trump to get revenge illegally?
We have brutalized Brazil enough. We caused lots of deaths and disappearances there. Why they have trade deals with us in the first place is a head scratcher.

Update on snoopy and Sam
I have limited info to share. More to come next week.
The autopsy report has not been completed, but the police officer could at least provide me with a few details.
What blew my mind was that I provided the police with the name of her brother, hoping he would give permission for the police to enter the home to try to find documents and papers that would help with the transport of Sam, such as vaccine and vet info. Well, it turns out her brother pre-deceased her and she has no living relatives that can be determined. Utah will take all of her property in escheat. Maybe Sam?! Maybe she has some distant cousin, but so far, none seem to exist. Her estate will go into the coffers of their Education department to fund public schools.
I will call both the Mayor's Office, maybe their Secretary of State, to get some help. The medical examiner might also give me some limited info.
I do not believe Tracy knew she outlived her brother.

brothers. The longest-lived brother had converted to the Mormon faith when he married. His wife and her family forbade him to associate with Catholic Tracy. Her maternal uncle, recently deceased, had always been her idol. They were close. Then, he disowned her because she refused to get vaxxed. He refused to have any contact with her.
