The Art Of The Deal

It wasn't that long ago that DOGE was going to save us $2 Trillion. Now Elon Musk is talking about just $150 Billion, all of which will be used to increase the bloated Pentagon budget.
So now President Trump who once talked about "90 deals in 90 days" is now 75 deals in 90 days, except that he's only been talking to 34 countries and that none of those deals have actually been done.

The Trump Admin seems to have decided that it would kick things off with an easy, major win. This would make perfect sense. This easy, major win was supposed to be Japan, but even that hasn't turned out as planned.

Japanese opposition lawmaker Shinji Oguma from the Constitutional Democratic Party sharply criticised US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, calling them 'extortion' and urging Japan's ruling party to resist America's demands.

Japan's PM happens to agree with that opinion.

“If Japan concedes everything, we won’t be able to secure our national interest,” Ishiba said in parliament on Monday.

Japan was supposed to be the 'test case'. So what happened?

“Many observers, including ourselves, had pointed to Japan as an early test case for an early deal,” the duo said. “And yet, the bilateral negotiations between the U.S. and Japan ended without the contours of a deal in place late last week.

If we can't make a deal with Japan, then we are screwed. Next in line would be our largest trading partner Canada, but that isn't going well either.

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over,” Carney declared on March 27. “We must fundamentally reimagine our economy. We will need to ensure that Canada can succeed in a drastically different world.”

The striking messaging, some of which Carney’s Conservative opponent Pierre Poilievre has also begun to adopt, underlines the degree to which anger at the U.S. has taken over the current Canadian federal election campaign. In the wake of repeated threats from Trump to make Canada the “51st state,” followed by the wholesale implosion of the countries’ economic ties, there seems to be very little appetite among voters for gentle reassurance.

Less surprising is that Mexico hasn't come to an agreement either.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said there’s no agreement yet with her US counterpart Donald Trump after the two spoke last week about lifting US tariffs.

If Trump can't make a deal with our allies, how in the hell are we going to make a deal with China?

China stressed on Wednesday that “equality, respect” are paramount in discussions with the United States amid President Trump’s stated optimism on reaching a new trade deal between the world’s two largest economies.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the escalating trade war between Beijing and Washington will lead to “no winners” and reiterated the East Asian country will not bend the knee to Trump.

“This tariff war is launched by the U.S. We have made it very clear that China does not look for a war, but neither are we afraid of it. We will fight, if fight we must. Our doors are open, if the U.S. wants to talk,” Guo said during a Wednesday press conference.

China has learned the lessons from U.S. sanctions against Russia for a decade. It appears that Trump thinks that he can bully the world like he bullies his domestic rivals, but that simply isn't going to happen.

China on Monday warned countries not to team up with the US in order to win a reprieve from President Trump’s tariffs — with Beijing vowing it would retaliate against those that do.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce promised to hit back at any country that chooses to strike economic deals with the US at China’s expense, intensifying its rhetoric in a spiraling trade war between the world’s two biggest economies.

“China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests,” the Chinese government said in a statement.

The Donald has scored an "own goal" against the United States with the erratic tariff policies. A big one.
