Open Thread - 04-18-25 - What's For Dinner?

Can you feel it? We're just about there.

I heard it in my best friend of fifty years voice a few days ago. At 74 years of age and close to the end of the 10 year timeline he was given after his major heart attack, I would have thought that he would want to enjoy life in his new found home in the state of Florida. Given his condition I would have thought that he would want to take life easy in what's left of his time in this realm. I wanted to talk of old times, good times, of old friends, of family, about our lengthy friendship through thick and thin, of our lives well traveled. All he wanted to talk about was how ready and willing he was to fight to the end. I could sense the panic and fear in his voice, it was palpable.

I hear it and see it I every day from our so called leaders whose prime directive is supposed to be to the citizens that they represent. Instead of words of unity I see and hear words of hatred for the other, words of division, words of contempt, words of violence, words that portend a dark future. Words that the true believers take to heart, and some will surely take to action, some already have. Words that are meant to escalate and metastasize. Words of panic and fear, and they are palpable.

I hear it and see it everyday from our so called media. I haven't watched television for years, but the few times I do get a glimpse of it, it reeks of coercion and control, of fences and severance, of the breakdown of civil society. The talking heads babble in unison, change the channel, they're all the same, it's all the same. They are the appointed shepherds of the collective hive mind, droning their words of panic and fear, and it is palpable.

I used to think that television was the main wellspring of political orthodoxy, it's not. That locus, I have come to the conclusion, is now the in the domain of the internet. Once thought of, in my mind, as the vehicle of ideas, of the sharing of information, it had the potential to change the world. It did and it has. The stylized political corners of the internet have become the town halls of fear and hatred. It has cordoned humanity into cubbyholes of group think mostly devoid of thoughts outside of the normalcy bias so carefully crafted by the primal nexus of that which resides in the amygdala of the susceptible . It is the playground of panic and fear and it is palpable.

I hear and feel it when I venture out into the public. People are anxious and aware something is dreadfully wrong. You can see it in their eyes, hear it in their speech. They, for the most part, like most everyone now-a-days, have made their minds up, there's no middle ground. Sides have been taken, and that my friends, in my humble opinion, is by design.

The last several election cycles have so radicalized the electorate that there may be no more going back. By offering up some of the worst of humanity our so called leaders have driven home the sturm and drang. Their policies are so untenable by those on the opposite side of the political spectrum that it leads to further division, closed minds, and ultimately, the march to violence. Their words, the politician's, drip with fear and panic that trickle down into the minds of zealots and fanatics and with some, have lead to action, in the worse sense of the word. Instead of words of unity we get "Fight, fight, fight" from one side and "Resist, resist, resist" from the other in a subconscious effort to push us to struggle against one another, and to take our eyes from the prize, chosing our own destiny.

The catalyst for our undoing may not happen this election cycle, but we're close. When the pendulum swings back the other way, and it will, because it's obvious to me the hoi polloi really have no say in it, it will be so divisive that the tightly strung and propaganda driven state of affairs will snap.

We The People have become hopelessly divided. It's what's for dinner in the mind of the authoritarian, and if we don't somehow stop the trajectory, We The People will be offered up as the entrée.

I haven't been obsessing about this in my posts here so much the last couple of years, but I believe I posted a dozen or so times, the Cassandra-ish thought that we are being driven toward civil war. As urban life in Los Angeles slowly returned to the traffic jam mode that always defined this city, my thoughts on the hidden plot drifted toward a similar conspiracy theory to the effect that the goal was to destroy the American empire to make way for a new world order.

Who knows what the invisible hand of The Market will ultimately do to us?

Not likely to be anything I like.

Excellent exposition, my brother.

I fear, the trajectory:

...the hidden plot drifted toward a similar conspiracy theory to the effect that the goal was to destroy the American empire to make way for a new world order.

Our so called leaders are of different flavors, but in the end, made from the same ingredients. Advanced technology now offers the authoritarian wet dream, total control. In my mind, it's a cinch that eventually that tool will be used, after the fabric of society is torn asunder.

I suspect that the trigger that will immamentize the eschaton will be the upcoming financial collapse. Once no one can afford food, fuel, or housing, the resulting violence will be completely inevitable, and the descent into tribalist fury will be complete and immediate. Trump can tenderly regard his own visage in the mirror as long as he wants- but once it starts, it will not stop until the in-stock ammo runs out.

All the wrong people will get killed, of course, and the assholes who will have brought it on will largely escape unscathed (except for a few who are in the wrong place at the wrong time). Then, it'll just be guerilla action that takes them out piecemeal, when they dare to step outside their compounds over the following cold/hungry years.

Another possible trigger would be for our wars to finally come home to our soil. If we were to lose a city or two in a brilliant white flash, all the people who really want to go shoot "those people", whoever they imagine them to be, will see no reason not to live out their fantasies.

I always thought the latter was the more likely scenario. But our Fearless Leader has now shown that his unassailable mastery of bankruptcy is the more likely vector for our demise. The financial house of cards is showing major signs of tilting.

I'm glad that I'm old and childfree. It's all the same to me at this point. Once it starts, I intend to find the nearest firefight and walk into the middle of it, just as I always intended to get converted into plasma in my tux. Saves me the cost of buying guns and ammo, and gets me out of the game right up front.

Tl, dr: I want no part of being even more of a slave to the faceless billionaires than I already am. I'll leave it for somebody else to try to fix it.

@usefewersyllables
that the most likely scenario is economic collapse that will usher in a new order with the least amount of physical damage the infrastructure. I think that collapse is inevitable and what we are witnessing in the political world is finger pointing as to who's going to accept the blame. But the goal is the same, save the monied class why the rest of us are trampled upon.

Surely there have been peoples in the past that have faced worst circumstances, and the tyrants were ultimately supplanted, but now the vehicle has the potential to be inescapable.

We the People better get our act together, pronto.

@usefewersyllables @usefewersyllables "I'm glad that I'm old and childfree." Me, too. And no, I wasn't born into a dysfunctional family. Au contraire, my parents wanted and prepared for both their daughters. I wasn't maternal. It's just the same old tired mindset: Out of control greed and stupidity. I never considered this country exceptional. I'm a natural environmentalist, lifelong peacenik and political futurist. A lot of folks whom I greatly respected over the years have complimented me by calling me a free thinker. Interesting diary, JtC. Rec'd!!. Smile

The Point being that We already knew everything we think we are just now discovering. We saw it and knew it a long time ago. Vietnam made it crystal clear. We were among the first People to realize what the US really was. And most of our generation spent the rest of their time, since then, pretending what we saw wasn't true — Or, if it was true, then The Constitution would put a stop to it. (Which is why I loathe the woefully incomplete and obscure US Constitution as fool's gold for a gullible and clueless population. Our reliance on this obsolete document has been our undoing. (A few must have realized that too, a long time ago.)

What we did after that served us well — relative to our own well being. But that 'well being' ends with our generation. Almost everyone else downstream, on both sides of the kabuki, are left holding the bag, while their combined lifespans continue to shorten.

The Passive Voice speaks: "Somehow, along the way, the ball [of truth] was dropped)."

AFL sounded the alarm in an April 2 letter, accusing the administration of turning federal power inward. The group warned that officials were labeling “disfavored views” as “misinformation,” “disinformation,” or “hate speech” and then moving to suppress them under the banner of national security. The letter called it an attempt to “weaponize” the government against its own citizens.

It didn’t start with Trump, but by Biden. But it actually got its roots with the Patriot Act. Golly you’d think that your own government sees its own citizens as the enemy.

During Biden the base was all in favor of censoring people whose beliefs they didn’t like while MAGA who were on the receiving end was against it. But now that it’s Trump doing the censorship and cracking down on anyone who is critical of Israel they are all for it. But I’m not seeing any evidence of the dems or their base calling it out. Silence is golden. And we are our worst enemies. But then that’s by design isn’t it?

ETA

Tulsi says that the Trump administration has put a stop to the censorship, but they are lying. They are scrubbing the internet for ideas that they won’t tolerate and they are deporting people who speak those ideas. Trump even signed an executive order banning censorship.

I can’t express how disgusted I am with Tulsi.

I think that humans have always been tribal, it is just that the fear, angst, hate and all like that has become such a huge factor. It's really all about whether they're exclusive or inclusive and whether or not you'd want to join. Sure, there's Groucho:

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

but hermits are rare, voluntary outcasts, and such folks also form tribes on occasion, just like involuntary outcasts.

As for the rest of us, well, remember "The In Crowd"? Boy, they were cool, by definition.

Yah, suure. but hey, were they hip?

Heh, is anybody?

It all depends on how you slice it - consider Hubert Hunphry -

I first thought it started seriously with the hyphenated-americans in the 60's, 70's. The dems called it coalition building, but it just started a chorus of primal screams of "what about me". About this time the dems started to abandon the working class as a whole. This then became the base, each with their separate needs seeming to exclude citizens as a whole. It works for a while, because division can be exploited easily. I'm picking on the dems because we did what they wanted us to do, vote for them, trust them, in return they did not do what we wanted or needed. Election after election, and here we are. Obama had an incredible wind at his back, and he strolled through 8 years when we really needed hope and change, not pretty words.

I could never listen to Fox news, or Rush Limbaugh for longer than 5 minutes of so, not because I was offended, but because it was just blatant shit. What passes for news today hits me the same way, as much by what it omits as what it reports, and the dems, the dems. Still, here we are, leaderless, seemingly without power with a "resistance" that can't resist.

I read the Asia article that says that he’s deliberately crashing the economy so that he and his rich friends can buy up whatever is ruined. I didn’t know what to make of it, but maybe others can opinionate on it.

Either way we little people are screwed. Trump has fired som many government employees that help society… and still MAGA cheers. Dummies. Hopefully they wake up soon.

of course, without even breaking a financial sweat, each hire a few of those people and organize a set of parallel institutions to deliver community services that government won’t or can’t — the same way, dare I say it, that the Black Panthers, Hamas, Hezbollah, or the Irish Republican Army did in their respective empire-impacted areas in times of yore — so why don’t they do that?

Such parallel institutions, if competently run, would evolve to become the sinews of a genuine resistance and then — were indeed a revolution to come — the seeds of a new government.

> fired so many government employees that help society

@snoopydawg last January that Trump was doing this to force the Fed to lower interest rates. One aspect of the Feds supposed mission is to keep unemployment down. After all the financial shenanigans of the past decades, interest rates seem to be the only trick the Fed has left, and biz and Trump want all that "free money" back.
