Friday Night Photos Butterfly Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 04/11/2025 - 5:00pm
Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
It's spring. That means it's time for the annual butterfly exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. I stopped by the park on Monday to check it out. The variety and total number of butterflies and the length of time the exhibit runs varies from year to year. This year the variety and total number were the smallest and the length of run is the shortest I've seen in the dozen years I've been a zoo member. I hope the low numbers this year were an anomaly and not a sign of things to come.

Hi, Q
The Blue Morpho gets it's name from it's dorsal side.
We come from dust. We will return to dust.
That's why I don't dust. It my be someone I know.
Oh, now I see
a nice shade of almost turquoise
Thanks!

It's cool watching them
morph from brown to blue as they flap their wings.

What a gorgeous underside your photo reveals
Now I understand why they are called Morphs.
Actually
that's the top side if it's wings. But you are right, they are gorgeous.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Awesome butterfly photos SP! Outstanding work man! There is another Heliconian called the Erato that is in the same group as the Postman, very similar, and occurs rarely in the U.S., mostly along the Rio Grande. It is in Kaufmann. I photo'd one there in the late 80's. A kissin' cousin to the Postman.
Here is the best butterfly song... got the vinyl here... This is live with that same lineup on the Metamorphosis album.
Not bad for a bunch of San Diego boys...
I have work to do so gotta fly but here is a pic at the bird bath last week. Another adult male Golden-cheeked Warbler. As a breeder, a Texas endemic, the only bird whose entire breeding range lies within Texas. Actually on the Edwards Plateau, the central 20% of the state. No Ashe Junipers, no nesting Golden-cheeks. I think they are about to be de-listed which won't go well.
Thanks for the OT and great photos SP!
happy trails all!
edit to fix two typos, so far Three now...
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Hi, dystopian
The Golden-cheeked Warbler is very pretty bird. Bummer we don't have them around here. Thanks for the Iron Butterfly selection.

Hi d
That is one of the sweetest Warblers I've seen, in a group of the sweetest birds to be seen and heard. That is also an amazing piece of music, thank you.
Hi Social
The close up of the Blue Morpho looks like something stitched or woven. I love the patterns and subtle colours of the Giant Owl. And thanks for the music.
I’ve been excitedly preparing for a visit with my daughter, on her first time back home in 5 years, so no new photos this week. Instead I’d like to offer something from this weekends NZ Geographic for all you bird lovers. I think you’ll find the audio part interesting.

Be well all
Hi, janis
Thanks for the recording of the Huia bird calls. It's a shame that it's extinct. Here's an artist rendition of one I found online.
Enjoy your time with your daughter.
