As Peace is Pursued
Panic Ensues

Open Thread Image_0.jpg

The European elite and US neocons are in panic mode over ways to keep the Ukraine proxy war going. They were in literal tears as they closed down the Munich Security Council. Macron and Starmer are headed to DC to beg their master for more war. Pepe calls them Chihuahuas, and Putin predicted they would come to heel at the foot of their master. The summit in Riyadh was a good first step at normalizing US/Russian relations. Let's hope we continue down that path. D.O.G.E. is looking dodgy to me suggesting rebating taxpayers rather than applying it to our massive debt. Perhaps they see it as a stimulus package? Kash Patel made it through the senate to be appointed head of the FBI. Let's hope he follows through on his promised transparency and document releases. Plus lots more below the fold!

US President Donald Trump is optimistic that a peace agreement to end the Ukraine conflict could be reached within days, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said.Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Leavitt stressed that the Trump administration remains committed to swiftly ending the conflict, which is about to enter its fourth year. “The president and his team are very much focused on continuing negotiations with both sides of this war to end the conflict, and the president is very confident [that] we can get it done this week,” Leavitt said, without providing further details.

Trump Puts 25% Tariffs on Cars, Drugs & Chip Imports w/ Col. Douglas Macgregor (11 min)

The much anticipated — and, in fairness, also dreaded — Trump tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada are poised to go into effect and the likely impact on teh U.S. economy will be… who knows? As Col. Douglas Macgregor points out, everyone and their brother seems to have an opinion about what will happen as a result of these tariffs, but no one can know for sure.
Jimmy and Col. Macgregor discuss why he is hopeful that the tariffs will work to bring back manufacturing to the U.S., even if he doesn’t have hard evidence to support those hopes.

Many economists strongly disagree...
How Trump’s tariffs will accelerate US decline
Donald Trump’s tariffs will likely backfire, hurt the United States, and accelerate the decline of US dominance, argue political economists Radhika Desai, Michael Hudson, and Mick Dunford.
An hour video and transcript at the link above.

It’s been said that “He who has the gold, makes the rules.”
That never applied more to the United States than after WWII. At that time, Ft. Knox stored around 75% of the world’s gold, the U.S. was a manufacturing powerhouse, and was a creditor nation!
But alas, the United States would go down the fateful road of war & empire. Today, manufacturing is gone, America said goodbye to being a creditor nation and became the most indebted in history...
...and President Trump wants to see if the gold at Ft. Knox is still there.

You're Fired...
On Thursday, a federal judge ruled that the Trump Administration can proceed with plans to carry out mass firings of federal employees. As reported by The Hill, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who was appointed by Barack Obama, ruled that the labor unions which filed the lawsuit against the government layoffs had to take their case before the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) rather than a federal court. “The first month of President Trump’s second administration has been defined by an onslaught of executive actions that have caused, some say by design, disruption and even chaos in widespread quarters of American society,” said Judge Cooper.

There are two portals of money in every institution: money coming in and money going out. Keeping track of that in both directions is the key to operations. The final number can reveal profits or losses, surpluses or deficits. Regardless, the accounting books are the beating heart of every institution. Accounting means accountability, holding people to account for their work. This is why the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), formed by Elon Musk with a business-based mindset, sets its sights on two primary institutions in the federal government: the U.S. Treasury payment systems and the revenue agency. That is where the money goes out and where the money comes in. Tying these together and tracing the funds with normal accounting standards is the key to eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse.
...
No matter your political outlook, you should be grateful that DOGE seems finally to be setting things right in the operations of government. There absolutely must be a standard of compliance with accounting practices that every single business, nonprofit, or household has to use in order to maintain economic viability. After DOGE does its work, government should continue to practice the precedent established in these days, weeks, and months. The whole reason for accounting and careful audits is to verify what is true and thus enhance public trust in their own government. Again, we can argue all day about what the government should and should not do, but until we know for certain what is actually going on, such debates mean nothing.

Many would debate this conclusion. Brian Berletic is one example.

If the goal of DOGE is to reduce the debt, why are they talking rebate check for citizens?

I can't help but be suspicious of an oligarch in charge of auditing the government. None the less it needs to be audited, and already plenty of graft has been discovered. The question is will it be trade their graft for ours, or a sincere effort to balance the budget? Time will tell.

Pete Hegseth said that he wanted to close the revolving door between the government and defense industries such as Austin who came directly from Boeing or some other one. So Trump appointed a 3 star general…

Oh my.

“Trump fires top US general CQ Brown in shake-up at Pentagon ”

From the article:

“Trump said he would nominate Air Force Lt Gen Dan Caine ……as the new chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.”

——

I did a little digging as I have a suspicious mind…

That would be this Dan Caine https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-caine

1. Last month announced as a Venture Partner at Shield Capital. Shield Capital invest in similar (often the same) defence startups as Andreessen Horowitz and the Thiel boys – “Shield Capital invests in frontier technologies including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, autonomy, and space.”

[Bonus: Shield Capital analyst’s article in Foreign Affairs calling for the Pentagon/gov to harness the power of tech companies]

2. Also last month, Caine joined Thrive Capital as an advisor. Thrive is run by Joshua Kushner (brother of Jared), has Peter Thiel as an investor, and is itself an investor in Anduril among other companies in this part of the SV VC incestuous universe (also Open AI, Stripe).

Curiously Thrive’s website seems to be bare bones with parts “under scheduled maintenance” and the only reference I can find to Caine’s role is on his own LinkedIn page.

3. Even more also last month, he joined Palantir partner Voyager Space as “Chairman – National Security Board)

(4. Final also last month, he became a Venture Partner at SV Fintech VCs Ribbit Capital)

I believe this is the real reason the Joint Chief of Staff is being replaced. At the risk of broken-record behaviour, I think a huge realignment (read: money grab) in defense procurement is underway and this move supports my oft-repeated “spigot redirection thesis”

Emma has an interesting response.

It’s the final smash and grab against the population of the Metropole. And we thought it would only happen to mud people on other continents or deplorables (of all varieties). It’s looking more and more like the PayPal Mafia is making a play to eat up the defense contractors and banks. Their first step is to get rid of all the regulators and the revolving door between the Pentagon and the MIC.

They’ve also just sacked the entire contracting department at OPM. https://www.reddit.com/r/1102/comments/1iuzrv1/opm_has_officially_rifd_t... and GSA apparently just waived education and warrant requirements for making their contracts. This could mean that federal contracting procedures used to assure some level of fair playing field, may be completely going out the window. I could see enlisted military personnel with no formal training just rubber-stamping sole source contracts to certain favored personalities, based on calls from higher up in the chain.

I really need to move my finances abroad, which is extra hard for an American

Looking like it’s the old playbook of SSDD.

Many of the people who created PayPal are now inside the government.

At least some veterans are pleased with the firings...(9 min)

(9 min) The presentation focuses on a major shake-up in U.S. military leadership and a broader effort to reform and rebuild the military under new leadership. Key points include:
Leadership Overhaul – President Trump fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General AQ Brown, followed by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth removing five additional generals. The goal is to bring in new leadership aligned with military reform and modernization efforts.
Need for Reform – The speaker argues that the current military leadership is resistant to change, with a bureaucratic system that prioritizes the status quo over effectiveness. Historical examples, such as leadership purges before WWII, are cited as precedents for this kind of shake-up.
Focus on Warfighters – Hegseth emphasizes a renewed focus on strengthening the military’s combat readiness and warfighting ethos, rather than bureaucratic inefficiencies. He positions himself as someone who understands the needs of troops due to his combat experience.
Pentagon Bureaucracy & Budget Cuts – The Department of Defense is facing budget efficiency measures, with cuts targeting redundant headquarters, excessive top-level staff, and outdated bureaucratic structures rather than frontline forces.
Strategic Vision – The goal is to modernize the military, eliminate inefficiencies, and make it more effective in future conflicts. This involves streamlining command structures and reallocating resources to frontline capabilities.
Overall, the presentation underscores a bold and controversial effort to transform military leadership and operations, challenging entrenched bureaucratic norms in favor of a more combat-ready force.

One thing about it all...we won't be bored for the next few years.

Thanks again!

There are two options here:

1) they can try to match the Russians in the production of 155mm artillery shells. Good luck with trying to do that while Trump crashes the economy with tariffs.

2) they can try for peace on Earth.

want to take over making defense weapons from the big 5. Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop and 2 others.
We spend more money making more sophisticated weapons that don’t live up to the hype such as the new javelins and especially when compared to Russian weapons. Ukraine thought the javelins were too difficult to work and they stopped using them.

The defense cuts that Hegseth talks about are just moving money around to other products. Trump wants to create an iron dome over America that Russia has already proved they can get around. Israel retired the Patriot missiles because they were useless against Iran’s ballistic missiles. But then they were useless against Iraq’s skud missiles way back when.

Mr. Sachs is, of course trying to sell a modicum of rational behavior, and probably futilely so. Think for yourselves and adopt and implement a "European Foreign Policy". WTF? I believe that the closest Europe ever came to having a European Foreign Policy was under Napoleon Bonaparte. At that time, just as today, the Brits were outsiders. The Spaniards rebelled, the Germans fought back, etc. The history of Europe is a history of continual strife and conflict among the members because each nation-state was, in the eyes of the others, foreign. This is still the case, regardless of the fact that they all kow-tow to Brussels.

Kudos for the patience and finesse with which you address the TDS-ers on this site; I do not have that kind of patience at this point. I agree that the audits are necessary before anything can be done, and I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone valuing good government and hating corruption would not welcome this development. Your approach, like mine, seems to be: "Yes, it may turn out to be a sham and the new administration might have self-serving intentions, but would it not be preferable to wait and see what develops before dismissing it all as just another flavor of corruption." Drastic times call for drastic measures, and we certainly do not have anything more to lose at this point.

The warmongers in EU and US are still trying to gin up a war with Russia, or better yet, build up massive and profitable military budgets. Why? Because before you know it, Putin will be in Hooterville and areas there abouts.

I looked up the size of the Red Army which pushed back the Nazis in WWII and then captured all of Eastern Europe. 11.3 million strong.

Size of the current Russian army: 1.5 million active. 2 million reserve.

Outside of Ukr, the Russians do not have the manpower to invade anybody but the Ukraine. And even there they are limiting themselves only to the traditional Russian speaking areas.
