The Good

My initial idea was the defunding of USAID is good. Of course, it will depend on how it is implemented.
Plus, there are challenges...
A federal judge has temporarily barred the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Washington’s primary vehicle for funding political projects abroad, from putting thousands of employees on paid leave. The order was in response to a lawsuit filed by two labor unions representing federal workers. A “limited,” temporary restraining order issued by Judge Carl Nichols in the US District Court in Washington, DC, on Friday, banned the US government from placing around 2,200 USAID workers on administrative leave or evacuating them from their host countries before the end of the day on February 14. The ruling also reinstates some 500 employees who had already been furloughed.

A federal judge has temporarily barred the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by Elon Musk, from accessing the personal financial data of millions of Americans kept at the Treasury Department.

Alex then moves to other topics.
USAID Media Payments Could Be ‘Biggest Scandal In History’ – Trump
Billions of dollars have been stolen at USAID and used to pay for positive media coverage of Democrats, US President Donald Trump has said. The claim comes in conjunction with a White House announcement that it will stop “subsidizing” Politico. In January, the Trump administration initiated significant changes to the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Trump ordered a near-total freeze on foreign aid, aiming to align assistance with his “America First” policy. Trump took to Truth Social on Thursday to warn that “the biggest scandal in history” was brewing, after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that American taxpayer money had been used to subsidize government subscriptions to Politico and other media outlets. Leavitt was referring to Politico Pro, a premium legislative and regulatory tracking service used by multiple government agencies.Politico Pro subscriptions are reported to cost up to $10,000 annually.
It is even worse...

It's not just the subscriptions: there are huge "ad contracts", dinner parties DC throws itself under the guise of "media conferences", sponsorships, etc all paid for by taxpayers.

Controlling the narrative is a primary tactic of US power.
Jimmy had an interesting take about how Trump's rapid actions have the deep state disoriented.
How Trump Is SHORT-CIRCUITING The Media Narrative Control System!
Since the moment the oath of office left his lips, Donald Trump has been employing a “flood the zone” approach to governance, overwhelming the opposition, the media, the courts and the public with a head-spinning array of executive orders and executive actions.
Jimmy and Kurt discuss how this approach not only puts all Trump’s critics on the defensive, practically knocking them off their feet, but also disrupts the narrative driving channels embedded withing the Deep State-media nexus. (19 min)

'Dismantling' USAID Is A Distraction From The Real Agenda | Whitney Webb (6 min)
She suggests FASAB - S-56 is the issue to real national accounting.
In October 2018, while most Americans were focused on the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, the U.S. Congress and the Executive branch adopted Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB) Statement 56, an accounting policy that renders U.S. government financial statements essentially meaningless. This follows many years of undocumentable adjustments at the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Defense, now totaling over $21 Trillion. Fitts believes the issuance of FASAB Statement 56 is a “material event” in its impact on the credit of U.S. Treasuries and related securities and recommends that citizens and investors take note, particularly in light of the accelerating growth of outstanding federal debt.
Basicly both Brian and Whittney are saying - You gotta be kidding if you think the US is going to dismantle it's regime change arm.

The Bad
The bad this week from my perspective was the dem-wit's behavior going after RFK, Tulsi, and Kash. The silver lining is that despite their childishness, it looks like all three will be confirmed. May take Vance's vote again, but it is what it is.

(23 min) Tulsi Gabbard, RFK Jr. & Kash Patel Confirmation Hearings RECAP & ANALYSIS! Viva & Barnes
Robert F. Kennedy Jr's Chances of Getting Confirmed as HHS Secretary Next Week, w/ Sen. Ron Johnson (12 min)
Megyn Kelly is joined by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson to discuss Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s upcoming senate confirmation vote for HHS Secretary, whether any GOP senators might vote against him and any Democratic senators will vote for him, why he’s the right person to take on corporate interests, the absurdity of RFK's confirmation hearings, and more.
The Rise and Rise of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
There is much to learn about the way the world works today by watching the confirmation vote on Trump’s pick of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services. In so many ways, this is a remarkable development with a dramatic story arc, one that speaks presciently to events over the past five years and where they stand in public consciousness.
...
In committee—and likely too in the larger Senate—the vote fell along party lines, but not in the way one would expect. This lifelong Democrat and scion of the great Democrat family was opposed by every Democrat and supported (so far) by every Republican. Not only that, but the Republican-friendly press opposed him tooth and nail. The Wall Street Journal, National Review, and the New York Post all published bitter editorials that called the nominee a crank and conspiracy theorist.
Largely because of a huge push from the grassroots—and because of support from Trump—the Republicans voted for him in any case, while the Democrats simply could not and did not, despite the manner in which Kennedy, in many ways, represented causes long important to many people generally considered to be on the left. Thus does the expected confirmation of Kennedy—his rise and rise for fully five years—embody the best symbolic indication that the old partisan and ideological divides in the country that date back three-quarters of a century find themselves fully scrambled into a wholly new alliance. If you attend any events that bring together MAGA and MAHA, you know exactly what I mean. They are exciting scenes of people who have never been in the same room together, gradually discovering points of agreement and feeling very optimistic about the future.
The Ugly
Have you booked your vacation at Trump's Gaza Riviera Resort and Casino? I haven't either. His idea to simply move out all the Palestinians and take over the real estate is this weeks UGLY idea. People are all over the place interpreting what this means...

Pepe has his own take too...
The “American Problem” In West Asia (Pepe Escobar)
The 14th Middle East Conference of the Valdai Club in Moscow was hit by a geopolitical bunker buster bomb right in the middle of the proceedings: the announcement, by US President Donald Trump himself, of some sort of future Trump Gaza Riviera Resort and Casino in Palestine. Even before international outrage started to overspill, from the BRICS front to ASEAN to the Arab world (which sees it as Nakba 2.0), reaching even Trump-friendly Saudi Arabia and major US allies in Europe, perplexity set in at Valdai among most scholars and academics. Two glaring exceptions were professor at the University of Tehran Mohammad Marandi and former British diplomat Alastair Crooke – always delicately nuanced analysts of West Asia.
Both have long argued that as the US empire is being forced to retreat, it will become much more ruthless and take greater risks. Marandi qualifies Trump as “a gift” to American global decline. Crooke, for his part, wonders whether Israel’s far-right Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu really trapped Trump in a quagmire – when it may be the other way around. Trump now seems to have Netanyahu – which he basically despises – exactly where he wants him: owing favors. Trump made a lot of bombastic promises, which Netanyahu can sell as a major success to the Tel Aviv warmongers who compose his government. So his coalition will hold – for now. Yet, in return, Israel will still have to follow the next steps of the despised ceasefire project.

The Washington Post reported Friday that the United Kingdom’s deep state has demanded that Apple create a back door for them to retrieve all the content any Apple user worldwide has uploaded to the cloud—what would be an unprecedented erosion of online privacy and civil liberties. Citing anonymous sources, the Post reported that the British government’s undisclosed order was issued last month. It reportedly requires Apple to give officials blanket capability to view fully encrypted material. Typically, Apple has assisted authorities on a case-by-case basis—such as helping the FBI access a terrorist’s phone, for example. The Post noted that the access sought by the UK “has no known precedent in major democracies.” According to the Post, the UK’s order was made pursuant to the sweeping U.K. Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which authorizes law enforcement to compel assistance from companies to access user data.

Things are getting ugly in Ukraine with Russia's steady advance. Alastair had a good article suggesting a path to peace...
The greatest (geo-political) showman’s “inside out” political solution
The U.S. needs to always to ‘win’. So does Trump understand that the ineluctable dynamics of this war militate against presenting any transactional outcome as a clear ‘win’ for the U.S.? Of course he does (or will do, when professionally briefed by his team).
The logic of the Ukraine situation, to be blunt, suggests that President Putin should quietly advise President Trump to walk away from the Ukraine conflict – to avoid taking ownership of a western débacle.
Putin hinted this week that the Ukraine conflict could end in weeks, so Trump may not have a long wait.
Should Trump want a ‘win’ (highly likely), then he should be steered by Putin’s many hints: Intermediate missile deployments by both parties are creating heightened risk and ‘cry out’ for a new limitation agreement. Trump could say that he saved us all from WW3 – and there could be more than a grain of truth to it.

Good morning Lookout. I haven't had time yet to read or
watch any of the clips, but will definitely have to do so. I will say, however, that a cursory perusal of FASAB Statement 56, without and prior viewing of Ms. Webb's discussion, doesn't particulrly Har me. It says that they may, at their discretion conceal, misrepresemt, misclassify or bury information subject to classification, even to the extent of making it an unidentified line item in the statements of some different governmental entity than that in which it occurred. We can be certain that they have been routinely doing that and worse all along so this amounts to permission to maintain the status quo in this regard.
As to the overall topic and subject matter, seeing the concentration here, all in one place got me to thinking. I suspect that we all know or suspect what got JFK killed, do we not? Just sayin'.

So much is happening so fast. Sometimes I have to just
stop or put my mind on hold for a day or two. The rate of change exceeds humans' ability to adapt. In fact adapting to recent changes may be rendered obsolete almost immediately. So how do we cope? Gardening and music, conversation with real friends.
So much to react to. Hearty yes to the DK question. The site was most likely a paid for Dem operation. Remember the thousands of roses delivered to Nancy Pelosi? Gag me.
The thing I have the most negative reaction to Trump about is Gaza and the Palestinians. One scenario suggested by several is the I'm your mother/father and since you kids (Muslims, ME countries) can't solve your problems, I'll take care of it for you. You won't like my solution so step up. Oh I wish this was a possibility. Also waiting until cabinet picks are in before revealing hate of the killing and horrific things going on there. Pretty cynical if so. Come on man.
Most fun this week: the taking away of security briefings and/or access of any number of former members of Biden and Obama admins. Couldn't happen to a better bunch.
About the DOGE efforts: I equate Musk's job as like a deputizing event. He's an appointed sheriff brought in to clean up a corrupt town. I am often a low information reader as I don't know the ins and outs of things as smarter people than me can grasp. But it strikes me under the admin functions, including the many given up by congress over the years Trump can hire, fire, audit the agencies under his control.
It is also my understanding which I have stitched together from many reports on the actions of his posse is that they are read only; they are creating data bases and spreadsheets of money movement using AI. The Dems saying they can make changes I believe to be not true. But I don't know that there is solid proof of my beliefs. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.
I heard from Alex Christoforou today that there has been a phone call between Trump and Putin. More please. Without Elensky or the EU people in the room. Oh woe.
I have been looking for Alex Krainer's assessments this week as he is even tempered, nuanced and maybe more optimistic than events warrant, but it coincides with my own desire for good outcomes. Hearing what I want to hear?

Best to remain grounded in the real world, and simply observe the bigger geopolitical/economic sphere...at least to my mind. Plus just keeping up a home, acreage, and in my case, a road, all requires immersing in the real/natural world.
None the less, the great game is in flux and high gear, and I can't help but be fascinated. This week has been one of those drinking from the firehose kind.
I too enjoy Alex Krainer's measured view. He see's London as an epicenter to watch.

One of the best ways to share some on the ground information about our corner of France, which is Bourgogne.
So how about prices we pay for ordinary things. Right now the Euro in France and the USD are almost at parity. Usually Euros have cost more than 1 USD. Our Social Security checks are sent directly to our French bank. My Oregon pension (higher ed fully funded level 1) has to go to a US bank then we use Wyse to transfer to our French bank. Having a bank account unlocks many financial transactions in France. We could buy a car, rent an apartment and eventually buy a house because we have a French bank. Credit Agricole proud sponsor of Tour de France for many years.
Diesel is 1.65 per litre which about USD 6.50 gal
Eggs from the store are usually about .30 euro each or 5.50 euros for 18. Eggs direct from the farmer are 2.50 euros/dozen.
30% cream/milk per litre 1.30€
Red or yellow onions 2.99€ kilo(2+pounds)
Bio brown potatoes (bio or organic) 1.5 kilo in a mesh bag 3.69€
Camargue rice (little like Risotto) 2.50 € 500ml.
Butter semi sel, 500g, President brand 5.15€. We use a lot of butter and olive oil.
Huile d'Olive 750 ml Puget brand 12.03€
Sparlking wine, 750ml Vin mousseux demi sec 1.65 € This is cheap stuff. What we notice is that the quality isn't bad tasting but thinner.
Coffee L'Or intense 100% Arabica moulu (ground) 500 gr packages 15€ kilo or $7.50 pound.
Produce here from the reaction of US visitors is ridiculously low.
And contrary to US our fresh farmers' markets are cheaper than the box grocery stores. EG Intermarché is like a mini Fred Meyer, housewares, cleaning products, some gardening things, seasonal products. We have two nearby. Each manager apparently has some latitude to what is stocked and how much local products are sold. More local products are sold in these stores than we were used to.
There is a hierarchical pricing scheme for most grocery products: high end, store brand, and bargain for those on a budget. Most types of products can be bought least expensive, more likely to be commercially packaged and produced, maybe less organic and lacking some of the flavor sparkle but a french person can always buy escargots maybe only ten, and maybe from Poland, but hey we have our apero.
So far our day to day is more expensive but not extraordinarily so. However, French people are much closer to the ground than many USians. They haven't got much wiggle room for price increases. We've been hit hardest in electricity, gas, in general house heating and car fuels. 1.65 € per litre is low. We have been up to 1.85€/litre.
Here we have many backyard chickens; lots of goats; herds (troupeaux) of beef everywhere. Even in large cities we are never very far from agricultural countryside. Tractors in town, even animals driven through roundabouts is not uncommon. We are constantly aware of farmers and their work.
How do we compare?
ETA more prices

Your food prices are cheaper than ours, but not by much. However our gas prices are a good bit less expensive - about $2.70-2.90/gal over the last several months. Other states are higher.
In terms of my comment about Europe, I was referring to the political chaos. Macron's power grab despite losing the election. The Le Pen - Mélenchon contrast, and so on. Germany seems even more chaotic if that is possible.
There's similar chaos here as we watch the empire slowly decline.

And that's the way, they show that they wish
That they had your smile"
So my confidence was up for a while
I got real comfortable with my own style
I knew that they were only jealous 'cause
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then so are you, so are you
There was a time when I felt like I cared
That I was shorter than everyone there
People made me feel like life was unfair
And I did things that made me ashamed
'Cause I didn't know my body would change
I grew taller than them in more ways
But there will always be the one who will say
Something bad to make them feel great
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then so are you, so are you
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then so are you, so are you
Everybody talks bad about somebody
And never realise how it affects somebody
And you bet it won't be forgotten
Envy is the only thing it could be
'Cause people are all the same
(The same, the same)
And we only get judged by what we do
(What we do, yeah, yeah)
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then so are you
So are you
People are all the same (oh, oh, oh)
And we only get judged by what we do
(What we do, yeah)
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then so are you
So are you (yeah)
So are you
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
So it's good night friends!
