Open Thread - 01-10-25 - The Times They Are A Changin'
All I've got today is an announcement.
It's time for a change. C99 is going to get a face lift. No, scratch that, a totally new face.
We're going to get a new site. It will be different than this site. How different I can't say yet, but it will be significantly different. It will still be a blog with essays and a comment section but with a new look.
I have to start over from scratch and totally rebuild the new site, that my fiends, will be a huge undertaking so I can't say how long it will take to get the new site on line. Hopefully it wont take too long. The current site took a long time to get it to what it is today, especially the comment section, I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it just right. I'm hoping that the new site will be easier to build. But it's been a long time (10 years) since I've built this site, so I'll have to re-hone my skills.
It will be a major software upgrade and it wont be possible to keep the site as it is now. I can't say at this time what the functionality will be like, but it should be a big improvement.
I know in the blogging world there's always resistance to change, but once we get used to it I'm confident the change will be worth it.
It's time to modernize c99.

Good morning Free Rangers...
If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.
Have you got any suggestions? I can't guarantee anything, but I'll sure try to meet expectations.
Thanks for all your work!
Will the content here transfer over to the new site?
It's snowing here, about 2" and growing. It should all melt off tomorrow. So it is nice to see and enjoy. I'll go out and get a photo when it maxes out. I looked back the other day at the many fairly deep snows we got in the late 80's and through the 90's. This century hasn't produced much snow here.
Before we know it, spring will have sprung, but winter is my favorite time to walk through the woods. Hope everyone is staying warm and doing well.
Don't work too hard on the redesign, and thanks again for all you do!

Yes...
the content will remain. The database that contains all of the content will be migrated to the new site. The site layout will change but not the past essays and comments.
You're getting the storm that developed here in Texas. Dallas and north Texas got hit pretty hard but all we got here was a lot of rain.
I'm looking forward to some pics from the holler.
There's no way around it, I'll have a lot of work to do creating the next c99 iteration. It's a good thing I'm retired. It will give me something to do and maybe it will keep me out of trouble. Maybe, heh.
There are some amazing tools out there
.
....that can build the community for you, and enhance it in some very intelligent ways. Here's one example:

The tool will train itself and immerse itself in all the content created so far, and reintegrate the best of it to enrich the overall user experience.
This will be a real adventure for you.
Thanks for the info...
we're going to stay within the Drupal framework. Drupal will also be incorporating some AI functionality as well.
Yes, it will be a lot of work, but I'm excited to get back into the nuts and bolts again.
Drupal is an excellent choice
...since it is rapidly integrating many of these enhanced, interactive tools.
You will have some decisive advantages in smoothly elevating your brand.
As long as the "user's manual" instructions
are written in clear, concise, terms, change is a constant. Good luck (you don't need it) JtC. Are you the tech whiz for c99? Where does music maestro joe s fit in?
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
The technical...
side of c99 is basically a one man show, myself.
Joe is the c99 co-administrator and will remain so. He has all the administrative rights as I do, but I take care of all the back end duties.
@JtC Thanks for the quick
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Looking forward to the next iteration
Don't push yourself too hard.

Early release not possible, especially with good behavior.
Can you build in an anti-censor force field?
Thanks for the update and OT.

We're all cell mates so hopefully he does "good" time.
I'm glad you mention censorship. C99 uses a independent platform, Drupal. Because of that we answer to no one except our web host and so far we've had no problems with them. We also host no advertising so we don't have to worry about monetary restrictions in revenues due to advertiser's policies. The drawback with that is we rely on member donations to keep the site on line. The upside is we have no pressure to censor our content.
Thanks for the reminder
about the independence of c99.
Which also reminds me, you are due for a COLA increase in my monthly contribution. Will take care of that the next time I log into my online banking bill pay account.
Thanks for being there for all of us.
