Hope, Despair, Ambivalence?

Open Thread Image.jpg

Thankfully the election is over with results so overwhelming that no one seems to be challenging the outcome. That was my hope. Prior to the election there were all kinds of predictions of violence, riots, and protests which fortunately didn't come to fruition. So now we wait to see how the administration evolves. Many are hopeful. Some are in despair. Others are simply ambivalent. Is it possible for the nation to heal the divide? Vivek thinks we can? (1.2 min)

Trump Must End Wars, Focus On Problems At Home – Dennis Kucinich
US president-elect Donald Trump will have his hands full fixing the mess in foreign and domestic policy left by incumbent leader Joe Biden’s administration, according to Dennis Kucinich, two-time Democratic presidential candidate and retired eight-term US congressman. In an interview with Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi broadcast on RT on Saturday, Kucinich said that the success of Trump’s presidency will depend on his ability to shift the focus of US politics from the “globalist aspirations of the State Department” to problems at home. The veteran politician welcomed Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in this week’s election, saying that it represents a “historic shift” in US politics towards “populism.”

Dr. Peter McCullough Calls On Trump To Remove The Covid-19 Vaccine
Prominent cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough on Thursday called on president-elect Donald Trump to pull the COVID-19 vaccine from the marketplace. “The COVID-19 vaccine should be pulled from the market,” he said. “They have not had the safety track record America wanted to see.” He added that many who have taken the COVID-19 vaccine have suffered injuries from the vaccine, got disabilities or even died. Numerous lawmakers and doctors have expressed concern about the safety of the vaccine and whether the federal government and vaccine makers fully disclosed the risks.

One more side trip...Dutch Health Minister Admits Covid is a Military Operation”

The Dutch Health Minister has revealed a damning fact about the Covid Deception: The Dutch Minister of Health revealed that Covid was a far worse and far larger public deception than critics have realized. It was “a military operation” against the people. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is real. In the Netherlands, the Covid release program was run by the intelligence agency NCTV. One of the first to comment on Agema’s appearance on X was Woo researcher Cees van den Bos. Under the heading “the coup d’etat,” he characterized the NCTV as a “bamiluk” of NATO: “This country will only be free if the NCTV is completely abolished and these kinds of shadow governments never get a foothold again. This is the biggest obstacle that stands in the way of a democracy,” he said.

All Out Despair
Europe and especially Ukraine are in total despair over Trump's victory.

HomeAlone2024.jpg

Zelensky ‘Afraid War Will End’ – Slovak PM Fico
Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky is deeply concerned about Donald Trump’s triumph in the US presidential election, fearing it could lead to a suspension of military and financial aid from Washington, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said. In an interview with Radio Slovensko on Saturday, Fico discussed how Trump’s policies could impact global politics and the Ukraine conflict. The prime minister claimed that when he saw Zelensky during the EU summit in Budapest, Hungary, on November 7, the Ukrainian leader appeared visibly shaken. “Have you ever seen a person who is afraid that the war will end? I saw him, and his name is Vladimir Zelensky,” Fico told the host, adding that Zelensky seemed “shocked that Trump won and that there could be a halt to aid from the United States.”

As the dust settles after a tumultuous U.S. presidential election, the magnitude of Donald Trump’s victory becomes clearer. His decisive win to become the 47th president of the American Republic is an emphatic popular mandate for change. This could enable Trump to bring the disastrous U.S.-led proxy war in Ukraine against Russia to a peaceful end, as Francis Boyle, a respected American professor of international law, remarked this week. Going into the election, the stakes could not have been higher. A continuation of the nearly three-year-old conflict – as would have happened if the Democrats had remained in power – was potentially leading to World War Three and a nuclear conflagration. Trump had starkly warned of that imminent danger. A central part of his election platform was a pledge to push for a diplomatic resolution.

I guess our hope leads to Ukraine's despair.

Another loser...

Billionaire hedge fund shark-turned liberal ‘philanthropist’ George Soros’ financial interests and political projects may be in trouble when Donald Trump returns to the Oval Office, with tens of millions in campaign funding, smear jobs and even involvement in the Trump prosecutions failing to stop the former president from making a comeback. Bloomberg reported on Friday that Soros Fund Management plans to shut down its Hong Kong office as part of a surprise “administrative reorganization” after 14 years of operations. The move may signal preparations by the Soros family to make major changes in the way their soft power empire operates with Trump back in power. The campaign by the elder Soros and his son and heir apparent Alex to keep a Democrat in the White House has failed to pay dividends, despite the Soros’ Fund for Policy Reform’s transfer of $60 mln to Future Forward, a pro-Democrat dark money super PAC.

I somehow don't think the globalists will go quietly into the sunset.

Putin Outlines The ‘Moment of Truth’ (Pepe Escobar)
President Putin’s plenary session performance (address + Q&A) at the annual Valdai Club meeting in Sochi felt like a high-speed train on cruise control. Totally cool, calm, comfortable, in full command of a Himalaya of facts, no political leader anywhere – recent past and present – would even come close to delivering what amounts to an extensive, detailed world view deeply matured over a quarter of a century at the highest geopolitical level. Putin began his address referring to the October 1917 revolution, drawing a direct parallel with our turbulent times: “The moment of truth is coming”. In a clear tribute to Gramsci, he stated how a “completely new world order” is “being formed before our eyes.” The subtle reference to the recent BRICS summit in Kazan could not possibly escape critical minds across the Global Majority.

Gold prices took a hit today, but Jim Rickards believes the sell-off is temporary. “Gold is being driven by factors that are bigger than Trump,” said Rickards, New York Times bestselling author, adding that while this recent dip may be short-lived, he expects gold to strengthen significantly over time. On Bitcoin’s rise, Rickards attributed it partly to Trump’s appeal to various groups, including younger, crypto-enthusiastic voters. Although Rickards remains neutral on crypto as an investment, he noted that Trump’s pro-crypto stance could benefit the industry. He also mentioned that the Fed’s meeting tomorrow is unlikely to be influenced by the election results, viewing the ongoing rate cuts as a reaction to economic slowdown rather than true stimulus.

As an empiricist and epistemologist, "hope" is not something I speak of often because in my mind it conveys a sense of the irrational, Not necessarily so, per "Definitions from Oxford Languages", whatever that may be, hope is simply

a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.

I have no issue with the desire part, though I do generally try to eschew desiring the impossible, but there is that "expectation" part. Also, there's the fact that it takes an object one hopes for x or hopes that y, etc. I suppose that it is not completely impossible that there might be some improvement in some aspect of my life which I could then hope for. Beyond that, it seems, all things being equal, an iffy proposition. A net improvement in my life, or the aggregate lives of my fellow humans, or all sentient beings seems to be extremely unlikely.

REMINDER: I see talk of the demise of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party has been through a great number of changes over time, continuously evolving into something somewhat different. About the only thing consistent about it, other than the name, is that it has always been corrupt. This is a feature of USA political parties that is in large part due to our secondary religion of so-called Capitalism, a corrupt system that favors corruption and the corrupt. At many points along this timeline, one could assert, if only rhetorically, that the original or old Democratic Party was dead. However, a time did come when the Democratic Party was taken over from within and openly and publicly killed and replaced with a different political party with great fanfare, and Bill Clinton danced on its grave and waved high the banner of the new replacement party, named, appropriately enough, The New Democrats. The only thing these Goldwater/Reagan "Democrats" had in common with the Party of FDR, JFK or LBJ was the name and an annoying habit of claiming to be "liberal" or "progressive".

We really need tio keep this in mind, preferably by never using the words Democrat and Democratic Party to refer to any of these post 1990 insurrectionists. We should, instead, always use locutions like NEW Democrats, or NEWDems, NuDems, or the like.

@Lookout
tbf the flip from the Dem to Rep in the South began in 1948. It did take until 1980 to be more fully consolidated because of intervening variables over several election cycles. And subsequently, some of those states flipped back in 1992, 1996, 2000 (if the FL votes had been counted), 2008, 2012, and 2020. How bizarre does it look today that in 1956 Adlai Stevenson only carried AL, AR, GA, MS, MO, NC, and SC?

From the founding of the USA, the question was Federalism vs. State autonomy (religion moved between the two). That gets embedded in (and distorted) within contemporaneous issues/conflicts of the two parties. Neither position was ever clean. For example, the earliest human rights position - pro vs anti-slavery - was distorted by the New England wealth accumulation from importing Africans that were sold wherever the labor shortage was more pronounced. Wealth accumulation in the form of slave holdings quickly followed. Once importation was banned (federalism, partially dressed up as a human rights position), the most egregious practices of slavery ensued. At the same time, decimating the native populations (genocide) and stealing the land and industrialization were owned by the federalists.

How did an immigrant like Elon Musk quickly amass the level of wealth that permitted him to be a major factor in the 2024 presidential election? Federalism in the form of taxation on wealth and federal government contracts as promulgated by both parties since 1992.

...is that Russia is winning. However, if there were some shocking tactical success with long range weapons inflicting heavy damages and casualties inside Russia, particularly multiple attacks of this nature, the need for a deterrent preemptive tactical nuclear attack would be increased to make the point they are not going to tolerate it. I think blowing up some nuclear power plant inside Russia, or destroying some oil refinery complex, or hitting a civilian infrastructure target, and causing large civilian casualties could trigger a tactical nuclear response from Russia. Another sensitive target could be a strategic base or command and control center, or civilian government centers. I don't think this is something Putin wants to do. But the ironic thing is I have little doubt the US armed forces would do the same under similar circumstances. The US calls it "escalate to de-escalate," that's where the term came from, shifting to the limited or tactical nuclear strike mode to signal conclusively that the war needs to end.

A smaller power lacking strategic depth but for its possession of nuclear weapons, and US military backing. They are more likely to perceive "existential peril" leading to a nuclear response, than Russia. This is the same problem that exists with North Korea. Asymmetry with prospective enemy military threats, makes resort to nuclear weapons more likely with Israel and North Korea. I think that is where some of the US support for the "ironclad commitment" to support Israel is found. The fear is what happens if they don't.

On edit-

I think this is a key point in the book review you cited Lookout, "no future enemy would be able to carry out another Holocaust." The North Korean analog historically, would be "no American strategic bombers will ever be able to kill millions of North Koreans again."

The biggest national security problem for South Korea is Yoon Seok-yeol. Gallup Korea rated his approval rating at 17 percent. He doesn't represent South Korea or South Korean national security interests. He is acting provocatively toward North Korea in the hope of creating a national security emergency that would justify having his hoobae's in the defense ministry and armed forces stage martial law, and get rid of the opposition in the national assembly. The way the Newsweek article accepts Yoon's explanations for events in South Korea is unbelievable. He's a compulsive liar, and his coterie of prosecutors are as unethical and dishonest as one can get. This is not surprising given Newsweek's pedigree.

I tried to get a screen shot of this counterdemonstration by conservative Yoon supporters near Gwanghwamun plaza in central Seoul (near the US embassy).
