aurora.jpg

Attended a star party the other night at a neighbor's house. We were treated to a very
rare showing of the Aurora. Pink and red in vertical waves.

~

The host pointed out some amazing stars. He is a virtual encyclopedia on star
knowlege. Some thing I learned more about: The Teapot (Sagittarius), The Owl, clusters and
binaries. The Box (Pegasus) and we tracked a few satellites as well. The summer triangle:
Vega, Altair and Deneb. Fascinating stuff! Helps to have a big telescope.

More aurora shots from last night.

Please share whatever shots you have with memes and tunes as you see fit. Thx

Any idea why the colors were mostly red?

It was cloudy here yesterday and it might be again because of planes crisscrossing the sky and making it cloudy again. I mutter very strong words when I see them doing it.

figure it may be because we are so far south (41 degrees north latitude)
the light gets bent or something ? Prismatic amplitudes Wink

the best auroras I've seen in were in higher latitudes -- UP Michigan,
northern Minnesota, Iceland, Maine and northern Montana. Colors ran from
white to blue to green.

Thank you for covering for Social, and for the exciting aurora display. What are the flashes of white light in one of the photos? I enjoyed seeing the silhouette of the house with its interior lights shining, framing the aurora lit sky.

My friend who is 500 miles south and closer to the pole sent me photos of the aurora she saw last night. What a treat for all who have seen it.

Great musical accompaniment.

On the beach

I'm preparing for a visit to my daughter and her family overseas. I will be mostly out of touch for the next several weeks. I wish you all well, and look forward to joining you again when I return.

Hi all, Hey QMS,

Thanks for pinch-hitting Capt.! Awesome aurora pics!

This daily updated gallery has been great lately of course... some nice australis too... I can't believe some were seen at Mazatlan in Sinaloa, and Hermasillo in Sonora. Last night.

Here are a few pixels.. was trying to shoot some moths at the porch light.

The reflection of the light in the lens presented a problem, attracting a moth!

This one has a nice paintjob. It was very small, less than an inch.

Thanks again for hosting QMS!

happy trails all!

@dystopian

Is the bright red of the moth a warning signal?

dystopian's picture

@janis b Hey J!

I would say if a warning, a fake one. What could a tiny moth do to potential predators. I guess perhaps if it ate something toxic and became that way (like Monarchs) but I think that is very rare in moths. Perhaps being nocturnal where colors like that do not show so well in the dark, and are often more shades of gray, it is a camo? It could also be a warning that there is a moth designer on mushrooms. ;Pink with orange squiggles? Straight out of San Fran in '69. Smile

happy trails!

@dystopian

faking one out with camo, to remain safe. A designer on mushrooms is a whole other explanation. I'll take both, thank you ; ).

The string of lights on a deck
overlooking the harbor. A bit
blurred owing to hand movement.

Amazing color range in your beach shots.

Enjoy watching the colors grow in the trees.
Kinda sad to see the loss of green.
Summer bye-bye.

I hope your visit with daughter is great!

Great photos as usual, and love the aurora borealis images. We made it through "Uncle Miltie" otherwise known as Hurricane Milton in good shape. The obf casa lost power for 48 hours. That was it. We are always ready for the worse. Dodged another kozmik storm bullet. Anyone who votes for any climate change denier was born without a brain. jb, have a safe trip and enjoy your family visit. Smile I'm glad the storm season is slowly winding down. Everyone take care. Rec'd!! Smile

I'm glad to hear Uncle Miltie was more gentle with you and many others than Aunt Helene was. Cheers to the end of another season! Thank you for your well wishes.
