Saturday Open Thread - 8/24/24: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

After the week of travel that occurred 3 weeks ago, I am still in travel mode in my mind, thinking of visiting historical sites, natural wonders, but this is the passage of time to the now, as Kamala would say.

Yesterday, RFK, Jr., suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump. You all know that by now. His speech is below, in case you didn't get to actually see it. There is also a transcript provided.

I haven't read the entire transcript, only saw the last 30 to 40 minutes of the speech live, as it happened while I was at work. My initial impression is that no politician in the race has his ability to state specific facts, specific statistics, or put any information into policy as supporting evidence. I regard him as the only statesman on the stage. The only one with any regard for the next generation of Americans. I am in disagreement with him that American kids are a focus and we must save them, at the same time he completely disregards children in Gaza, and wholeheartedly supports the genocide. My thinking at the time of this writing is that the Democrats will say sour grapes. The Republicans will be energized. If the Uncommitted were a 1 issue anti-genocide group, they will go to Stein.

I expect lots of analysis to be posted in the comments today. Please!

In other things on my mind, it would be surveillance. This is a strange criminal case. In Texas, we require sex offenders to register their presence and/or residence with a 7 day time frame. Two family members despise my client. They reported to the cops my client had moved, stayed gone, then suddenly re-appeared, and failed to register upon his return. They were described in the police report as "seemed to be mentally impaired." The client is charged with a 3rd degree felony, is not eligible for probation. Prison or drop the case, head to trial and hope for the best. I only spent 15 minutes skimming the District Attorney's paper file while we were awaiting the judge to take the bench. This is what I saw: GPS tracker info, cell phone info. I am talking 50 plus pages of tracking of my client's activities. All over the US, since he was a cross-country trucker. Map of everywhere his truck went, location of every call. It gave me the creeps. The info was READILY available to local cops.

I am extremely bothered by that. In the long run, the state has two impaired witnesses my client moved, didn't come back to Texas and register within 7 days, and I have 10 witnesses that can testify he was on the road working, didn't move. It is just the government's ability to know our every move, all day, every day. All of us. Very depressing, very frightening. Big Brother is watching you. All the time.

It is one thing to hear Snowden say we are the most surveilled country on the globe, but this week, I saw it first hand.

So, what are you all up to, and do you mind that much if your whereabouts and calls to pals are tracked and recorded and monitored? Ho.w many times have I heard that it's ok, I am not doing anything wrong, but nothing like "If I am not doing anything wrong, leave me alone, you fuckers. Get a warrant!"

To the NSA and FBI and Homeland Security and all you other fucks, have a boring damn day, ok? I am doing fucking laundry! Let me know if you think I use to much or too little detergent!

This is an open thread, so any comment about any topic is not only ok, it is encouraged.

Let 'er rip!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

The suspension of Kennedy’s campaign and his endorsements of Trump has shaken our two party paradigm, hopefully for good. Kennedy announced that he will request his removal from swing state ballots.

Brett Weinstein clip below puts the ramifications of the Trump/Kennedy collaboration in perspective.

@ovals49 if RFKJr.s' move makes any difference. If the influx of illegal immigrants vote, which seems to be a done deal, Harris will win overwhelmingly.
Our lives will get incrementally worse no matter the outcome. I can't remember a vote actually helping anybody since Nixon went to China and moved to end the draft.

about the well being of the populace, and how we might improve it is a breath of fresh air, and a step in the right direction. Finding substantial common ground to agree to work together on smells a least a little bit like hope.

Our lives will get incrementally worse no matter the outcome.

I hope you are mistaken, and that that the cross border voting scare is overblown.

Is it really true that non citizen immigrants can cast a vote, if they simply believe that they are a registered voter?

He has suspended his campaign. He requested removal of his name from the ballot in a “handful” of swing states but remains on the rest. His campaign is on hold, but he remains a candidate.

In the New York ballot access challenge over his ‘residency’ in NY, it is where his ‘domicile’ is claimed (In New York) that is the cogent determinant, not his current place of ‘residence’. RFK jr consulted a lawyers specializing in ballot access law, and filed according to this legal advice. There was no fraud, as claimed by NY. He should easily win on appeal.

One of the many ways the DNC and its operatives have hectored RFKjr’s campaign has from the beginning to pile on with frivolous legal challenges, thereby draining campaign funds on legal defenses. That and refusing a primary challenge within the party and denying crucial debate access were among the very undemocratic tactics of the Democratic Party. They no longer deserve the name Democratic IMHO.

@ovals49 days before he "suspended" his campaign, not step down. He is only seeking to remove his name from the ballot in swing states.
The DNC is a corporation owned by the Clintons. Why anyone would expect it to be honest and democratic is beyond me. Hence, the reference to the "Clinton Circle".
Nonetheless, the uncommitteds are a 1 issue group. They will not vote for pro-genociders, which includes Harris, Trump, and RFKJr.

@ovals49 campaign law, there's a difference between "suspending" and "ending" a campaign. If you suspend, you remain able to continue to raise funds beyond immediate needs in order to retire campaign debt. If you end a campaign, fund raising is more restricted.

But it's effectively an end to his campaign. He will arrange to remove his name from the ballot in "about 10" swing states, lest he become the spoiler, he said. His name will remain on ballots in most of the remaining 40 states. But as he has endorsed DJT, his campaigning will presumably consist of joint appearances with T on an occasional basis probably.

Look for more silly and misleading negative stories about him. The DNC plays hard and dirty.

A pleasant 62F this AM as I strolled Trade Day. Didn't buy a thing, but enjoyed visiting around. I did pick up some wood chip mulch for here around the house. We painted the downstairs porch deck and noticed it is getting bare around it so the mulch will fix that. One of those fast jobs with quick satisfaction.

The tomatoes are finally beginning to play out. All the dry weather I guess. It is already time to think about fall planting. How quickly the year spins these days.

I've really got nothing to say about our endless wars nor puppet selection.

I hope all is well in your world and your case goes well. I appreciate your battle with the injustice system. Thanks for the OT!

@Lookout Our first round of tomatoes were delicious. That second round had thick skins and they were not juicy. The weather did us no favors.
We are off to the store for some groceries for the upcoming week. A pleasant 15 mile drive through the country, cattle ranches all along the way.
I am seeing more and more cases on the docket about solicitation of prostitution, possession of child porn, etc...and have gotten info that there are teams of undercover cops working and posing, and entrapment is happening, but attorney's aren't utilizing it as a defense.
Even a local retired state trooper of high rank got swept up in a solicitation net. No pity for that crooked sob.
One place to have a talk with a client, leaving cell phones behind, would be...guess where? The holler!

Ok. I am too old for all this BS. Sorry good folks around here. I come back when I recover from his almost successful heart attack.

I better go searching my neighbors turtle. Our garden is more than 4000 square meters amd I am determined to find my neighbors turtle. How long do you bet it will take me to find that damned turtle. But they are such nice neighbors. I will give it a try. Jesus life is hard.

If you had the choice between being depressed, being pissed or being furious about things, what would be choir choice?

I am so happy to mot that mmentally "out of order" that I can't find the question mark on the key board, though it took me ... too long.

Be all well you good people. And not aggressive, please. Love and peace would be nice to have more of.

As we wade through the weeds of the Democrat party, there is no person or policy to endorse. What they did to keep third party candidates off the ballot is nothing short of fascism.
The big stupidity of the Republicans is to identify Harris as a commie. I wish they would spend an hour reading so they could properly distinguish those two economic theories.

@mimi

Whenever I see you and your photo avatar, my spirit lightens.

As disturbing these times are, we are all somewhat confused. I'm glad for you that you have a wonderful neighbour, and I hope together you find that turtle.

Look for your pet turtle in areas with moist soil, dense vegetation, and logs or rocks that can provide shelter. Turtles tend to hide in quiet, shady spots. Check around the base of plants, under bushes, and in any small crevices or holes in the ground. Search carefully as turtles can easily conceal themselves. If you have a water feature in your garden, check there as well, as turtles often like to swim. Move slowly and quietly, and use a flashlight to peer into darker areas. Calling out your turtle's name may also help, as they can sometimes respond to familiar voices. With diligent searching, you should be able to locate your lost pet turtle.

For turtle bait, you can use lettuce, worms, vegetables, or even a can of tuna with holes punched in it. You should scout out the location where you believe the turtles live.

....had a qualcom system in them. This could track the tractors location, be used for messages from and to the dispatch center, and keeping electronic logs. I'm not sure how private owner/operators are equipped. The lease to own people are like subcontractors, so I'm pretty sure they have the same or similar setup. A trucker pretty much lives in his truck. Even if you have a home, family life is almost nil, one weekend a month for most, maybe once every three weeks. I knew truckers who lived in their trucks. If you're single without a family, why take on the costs of a house or apartment you almost never use? You could store your personal effects there, your property, I guess. Take a shower at a place other than a truck stop. On the other hand, drivers who lived in their trucks just used commercial storage facilities or would tell me, I keep my stuff at my son's home or something like that.

There are day cab jobs, where the driver ostensibly "gets home every night." There is no place to sleep in a "day cab." The mileage is not as good, so the pay sucks unless you're a teamster, or UPS driver or something like that. Some companies say "home every weekend." That's rare. A company like Walmart that did it, might have a waiting list to get OTR jobs there. My info is probably out of date, so be advised. In my opinion its better to be an employee than a sub, as a driver, because the employer/carrier has to absorb the overhead and have benefits (mostly just health ins) to get any decent drivers.

Thanks for the Odds and Ends OTC.

I had about 700k miles. Only drove in Canada a few times. I stopped driving to retire. I think Vermont was the only one of the lower 48 I never drove through.

My reaction to the locals here when they start talking about Trump or Biden/Harris is pretty much indifference. The reaction I get from either side, is an assumption I must support the other side. I think "what other side?" If I use the expression "uniparty" or "they're all warmongers," they are nonplussed.

One thing I noticed was that the first people to put up Harris signs recently had had Ukraine symbols on their properties ever since that war began. The Trump signs have been up for years.

@soryang on the stand to make damn sure the jurors understand that truckers seldom see their homes.
This guy's cell phone was provided by the company and had to remain in the truck at all times. They fired him when he voluntarily gave it to the cops upon being arrested.
It isn't the fact that we are all surveilled that was the shocker.
It was seeing the detailed evidence. Just touching the maps, reading page after page, just really shook me. The coordination between the manufacturers and spy agencies has us all in a net. We just don't see it until we get arrested.

A quick note before heading to the blackberry patch to gather a few berries for breakfast muffins.

The surveillance is insidious. A couple of neighbors are independent truckers. At least 10 years ago began complaining about tracking while carrying certain loads. Insurance demands and safety for driver was the reasons provided for the requirements. Intersection cameras appeared on all routes but one to travel back and forth from the post office box to pick-up mail.

Spoke with the Fed-Ex driver yesterday during a delivery. They have received resent instructions to not photograph address on label, house or mailbox, unique identifying markers and keep themselves and other persons out of the picture.

Surveillance of suspected illegal activity on a nearby property can include drones monitoring your home. Four years ago thought I was being a little over-sensitive about being monitored. Computer, network and internet oddities kept happening. Surprising number of people would stop by to talk when I was outside and I would walk to the driveway gate. A few were most generous with offers to provide a helping hand with any work on the property.

Then my most troubling neighbor stopped to have me read the paperwork her trial attorney had provided after her place had been raided by the Sheriff's department. My place had been included in the area authorized for drone surveillance. The man she let park a trailer to live on her property in exchange for "help" around the place was an undercover cop. No wonder he was so persistent with offers of assistance with any little task I might find daunting to do myself.

Think we are entering the level of media, industry, agricultural and population control last seen WWII, only with modern technology twists. Found it amusing in my 20 and 30's how many of the silent generation I worked with would not indicate how much they knew about a subject until knew who were my parents, grandparents or employer. Then the type of conversation shifted completely.

@studentofearth Yum! I used to make a pie that was essentially sweetened condensed milk with blackberries in a pie crust. They once grew everywhere around my yard, but there are only a few small briar patches left. I rarely failed to find a coral snake in the patch. For reasons, black berries attracted them.
I figure drones are the future. Add food control, medical control, travel control, and thought control into the mix, and paranoia will be the next new mental illness. The treatment for that should be another expensive pharmaceutical product that was patented before the paranoia games began.
When I hear any of the WEFfers and Gates harping on the need to reduce population, I am glad I am old.
Thanks for the story of the raid!

answer the phone with some variant of "Hello all you cops, feebs, spooks, spies aniks, and narcs on the line. So who's calling?" This would inform or remind callers that your phone should be presumed to be bugged. There was really nothing one could do about all the surveillance and things like infiltrators and provocateurs at gatherings, etc. and if by some magic you could get an order prohibiting some aspect of it in certain cases, the law would simply ignore the order, so why bother. Everybody knew all about cointelpro, though it didn't have a name yet until actually disclosed, but it was no secret. I recall one party where, upon looking out the window (second floor) one could easily spot all the unmarked cars from various and sundry agencies, sometimes we would wave hi.

Today everybody is more hi tech (hello, how's your keylogger doing today?) There are more tools on both sides, but unless you air gap your existence, if they want to know shit, they do and will, which creates a presumption that they have and do, so adapt.

Unfortunately, true misogyny can be dangerous, especially in combination with other deeply felt animosities. The MSN news here suggested that misogynistic threats to Jacinda Ardern were credible, and accounted partly for her decision to quit as PM. The grapevine here also suggests it was credible. Because of misogynistic tendencies, in combination with other deeply angry feelings due to her management of the covid pandemic, I can believe it was a credible threat. I’m not naive enough to believe it was the defining reason, but I’m sure it contributed to her decision. Fear, real or perceived does weird things to people.

@janis b The take on from here is that Adern was so disliked, so validly criticized for her handling of the Covid crisis that she had enough and stepped down.
What you said about her feeling endangered is news to me.
Thanks for your input, friend!

@snoopydawg for these people:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strength_Through_Joy

  • Kraft durch Freude (German for 'Strength Through Joy'; KdF) was a German NSDAP-operated leisure organization in Nazi Germany.[1] It was part of the German Labour Front (German: Deutsche Arbeitsfront), the national labour organization at that time.
  • Set up in November 1933 as a tool to promote the advantages of Nazism to the German people and internationally, it was also used to ease the process of the rearmament of Germany. Through its structure of organized events and promotion of propaganda, it was also intended to prevent dissident and anti-state behavior. By 1939, it had become the world's largest tourism operator.

@enhydra lutris Short and to the point.
Annnddd...how's the chore list looking? Whittled down a bit?
Annnddd...are you doing the cooking this week?
I made an impulse buy today. A package of sliced beef brisket, fully cooked. After I got home and checked the label, I discover it is from a smoke house in Henderson, TX, specializing in mesquite wood in smoke pits and established in 1949. We will give it a test run for Sunday dinner. My bet it on it being stocked and the meal going into the rotation of our favorites.
We live in crazy times, and this election is the craziest of my life.
Have a great weekend, friend!

Last night Kennedy said that Trump will give us back our rights, but during his 1st term….listen to what the judge said he do. And don’t forget how he got Johnson to pass the new FISA law that doesn’t require the spy agencies to get warrants to spy on us.

@snoopydawg since it has been established as fine and dandy all the way up to the Supreme Court.
But I can use it to make a jury squirm, make them understand they could be next.

And bring up how they are spied on 24/7 without warrants even though they have done nothing wrong. Remind them of their right and not to just roll over and yawn like the country did when Snowden told us about it. Maybe if people got upset about their rights because stolen the government would quit stealing them.

https://fox59.com/news/national-world/reports-telegram-founder-arrested-...

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the popular messaging service Telegram, has been arrested in France.

The French outlet TF1 Info was the first to report the arrest saying that Durov was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Le Bourget airport. According to TF1 Info, the 39-year-old billionaire was accompanied by his bodyguard and a woman.

French authorities issued a search warrant for Durov, which was authorized by the OFMIN (Office to Combat Violence Against Minors) of the national directorate of the French judicial police on the basis of a preliminary investigation.

According to TF1: “[The] Justice considers that the lack of moderation, cooperation with law enforcement and the tools offered by Telegram (disposable number, crypto, etc.) makes him an accomplice in drug trafficking, pedocriminal offenses and fraud.”

Durov will face a judge and could face an indictment for a multitude of offenses including terrorism, narcotics, complicity, fraud, money laundering, and receiving stolen goods, among other possible charges.

It seems to me that Durov will not comply with giving access to the program that frustrates the watchers. If he would give a backdoor he would walk free. Besides the charges seem to be quite a reach tying him to everything criminal without actual proof.
