Saturday Open Thread - 8/10/24: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

It has been a week of waiting for war to break out. News is rarely ever good anymore.

I have gone hiking, visited a historic site, and will have to wait until next week to post photos.

Meanwhile, I will be in transit until 6 or 7 tonight, and will check in on you then.

Feel free to post whatever came across your radar. The video I saw that I want to recommend is Neil Oliver interviewing Whitney Webb. 1hr.22 minutes. Many topics were covered, all of interest.

This is an open thread, go where ya wanna go with your comments, friends!

Been a busy week here in the holler at the height of summer. Tables stay full of tomatoes to process and give away. Lots of okra too. We grew an froze so many peppers last year we only planted one plant. Sweet potatoes are finally going strong after a slow start. Muscadine picking starts next week and we've got quite the crop this year. Last years wine came out pretty good, and I hope this years will be even better as I learn the tricks.

Last week my 60 tractor wouldn't crank....needed a new coil. Well now it cranks in a second and I realize that the coil probably needed replacing long ago. So it's been a week of mowing too.

Always something. Be careful on the road, and thanks for the OT!

@Lookout One patch of road construction/one lane.
We just finished a pizza we had delivered, thinking about tomorrow's 7 hr drive. May not last long tonight.
At any rate, great on the tomato harvest, and that tractor you have is better than anything we could buy now.
Always great to get an update from the holler, dear friend.
Thanks for stopping by!

For some reason, that picture reminds me of Darwin Falls, once one gets to it and gets up close. This is bizarre, since Darwin Falls is in the high desert way up a box canyon off of the road to Death Valley..

Cool mornings with 80s to 90s later out here, so not too bad. Pear crop was very light this year, making up for extra heavy apricot crop. I think the weather is a big part of both. Still a lot to do around here and still thinking of yet more, so not much else on the mind except actual and incipient/threatened wars. Association = "Ancestral voices prophesying war" (Coleridge) and, ergo, Rush.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

As I was just one class short of getting a degree in biology, so the gender/sex thing at the Olympics interested me.

Interview with a development biologist who focuses on sex and sports.

She explains the condition Khelif has which was the lack of an enzyme to develop the penis while in the womb.

Interesting point she brings up is how different sexes are. Said at the cellular level there are differences between sexes at the angle on how neurons attach to cells.

In the previous interview, the guy did a poor job, but found two posts which summarize the issue from the point of view that Khief went through male puberty and the effects.

Just because a man was born with a poorly formed pnis, it doesn’t make him a woman. If he has XY chromosomes and testes (especially those that function and make male levels of testosterone), he’s a MAN. The label “intersex” doesn’t mean your half/half or something inbetween male and female. And in his case it means that his pnis and tstcls were poorly formed/undescended at birth, so he was incorrectly labeled as female. But he went through a male puberty (because his testes work just fine), which is why he looks like what he is, which is male.

The male puberty point is important - the musculoskeletal advantages of male puberty far exceed those gained by a post-pubescent woman dosing with testosterone. It's not just the level of testosterone, it's the permanent effects which set in during puberty and grant Khelif immense advantages offensively (punching power generated through the male hips and shoulders) and defensively (heavier and more robust facial bone structure).

Somewhere in a tweet I vaguely remember a claim that when men are dosed with hormones and chemicals to be equivalent to females for the purpose of completion that the so called male advantages still exist as those are permanently set at puberty.

at any point, dealt with the issue of XXY humans, which do exist, with 2 different totals of chromosomes. As I understand it, xxy humans come as both males and females as to their external hardware and all that, so what, if anything, is determinative there. I mean, clearly all of them are "xy", but all of them are also "xx". Also, what of true hermaphrodites, which history assures us have existed, is there any explanation for them at all?

@enhydra lutris In my college social history courses, I ran across info about babies being born with both vaginas and penises. This was turn of the 20th century thinking, up through the 1960s, and before genetic testing. The drs. would inform parents of the situation, tell them if they didn't consent to remove the vagina, the son would die of cancer.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

@enhydra lutris I have not had a chance to read how the biologist thinks of XXY individuals. I do remember for awhile there was a lot of discussion about men with XYY, with the belief for short period of time that the most violent male criminals possessed the additional Y chromosome. Never proven in prison populations. Also men in all walks were found to be XYY and not restricted to criminals (except those on Wall Street).

As for XXY just my initial research is that this condition known as Klinefelter syndrome is considered first and foremost a condition affecting males. Condition is caused by random error in cell division. The research literature considers this a male condition, and any therapies involves treating it as a male problem.

As for the 47,XXY who display as the literature calls it, a female phenotype would have research look up what experts say. But it may be so rare as not merit much discussion in deciding gender categories for sports.

One thing to remember is we are dealing with genetic problems when chromosomes are beyond the normal XX or XY pairings. These men (almost all) suffer various medical problems as a result.

Chromosomal variants in klinefelter syndrome

The typical symptoms are a tall stature, narrow shoulders, broad hips, sparse body hair, gynecomastia, small testes, absent spermatogenesis, normal to moderately reduced Leydig cell function, increased secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone, androgen deficiency, and normal to slightly decreased verbal intelligence. Apart from that, amongst others, osteoporosis, varicose veins, thromboembolic disease, or diabetes mellitus are observed. Some of the typical features can be very weakly pronounced so that the affected men often receive the diagnosis only at the adulthood by their infertility.

These are not men who are going to easily if at all achieve success in the upper strata of sports.

enhydra lutris's picture

@MrWebster

I think that it should be considered first and foremost to be a condition affecting humans, and a determination made on a case by case basis on which stereotypic strictly binary gender type should be assigned to them. There are xxy biological females, regardless of the presence of the y chromosome.

Your "developmental biologist" is jumping to conclusions based on nothing more than the say-so of a corrupt head of a corrupt and *disbarred* athletic federation which corruptly and unjustly "disqualified" these two athletes because they beat preferred competitors (a previously unbeaten Russian in one case, a Bulgarian in the other), without warning, without due process, in the middle of the competition, and, most significantly, without there being a rule in place to justify the "disqualification".

The IBA had to MAKE UP a rule after the fact to explain their misbehavior.

They were already on suspension from the Olympics since 2019, based on highly credible allegations of match-fixing, mismanagement, and overall corruption. About three months after this "disqualification", the IOC revoked their Olympic authority - permanently. (The IBA appealed - and lost.)

At this point, anyone who believes anything the IBA says, is either very gullible or has some serious axe(s) to grind (like maybe not wanting women to participate in boxing at all because it's "too unfeminine" and/or "too dangerous").

I should also add that based on her own words she's a blatant gender essentialist - men are XY, women are XX, no exceptions, no in-betweens, no dubious cases, not even the possibility of transphobes and TERFS running around barking mad screaming "MAN! MAN!" because what they see isn't a Miss American Beauty.

@TheOtherMaven on your level of the biology of gender. I freely admit I am not.

Past the argument of gender assignment by a doctor, my stance is that I do not want anyone to die in some contact sporting event.

was against a woman who went into the fight with a recently-injured nose, got hit in the nose again, and couldn't stand the pain - so she quit.

It was bad optics, at least to the casual observer (a couple of boxing aficionadoes have said the real reason it was no contest was that Carini just was not as skilled), and it appeared to "confirm" all the nasty malicious rumors that the IBA had been spreading.

Confirmation bias is a real, and really serious, problem.

At this time it looks as though there will be NO boxing at the 2028 Olympics - the IOC is through with the IBA, the IOC is NOT going to take the responsibility for running boxing again, and unless some suitable organization is ready and willing by then - th-th-that's all, folks.

He boxed at Madison Square Garden, boxed in Las Vegas. He was successful until his head injuries wiped out his ability to think.
By the time he was in his late 40s, he was hooked on pain pills. In his mid-50s, his family took them away, refused to take him to a doctor, would not pay for the prescriptions to be filled.
He got his Dad's gun and blew his brains out.
Boxing sucks.

But your mileage may vary. Feel free to slag me off to your heart’s content. As a troglodytic man, which probably makes me a YY or something similarly undesirable, I tire of trying to defend any damned thing like basic developmental biology any more.

Interestingly, one of the better-known cases, Poland's Ewa Klobukowska, had a highly surprising epilogue. Klobukowska had her records wiped after a chromosome test in 1967 tagged her as "not female", and allegedly as having "one chromosome too many" (a comment which has never been clarified).

She quit sports, got a job as an accountant, and about a year after her disqualification, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. "Not female"? You don't get much more female than having a child!

and not nearly as cut-and-dried as the reductionists are trying to make it.

Lin Yu-ting is taking the high road, not commenting any more than she can possibly help, and plans to go back to her academic studies (she's reportedly going for a PhD in Business Administration). And she isn't suing anybody.

Imane Khelif, on the other hand, is pursuing legal action for the cyberbullying she experienced - which IMHO will result in keeping the whole mess in the public eye. She has indicated that she plans to become a professional boxer (which is also not going to help her live this mess down).

Are either or both of them intersex? The IBA claims so, supported by an "independent" journalist whom the IBA "allowed" to see the "actual test reports" from New Delhi. The IOC claims that the tests were "impossibly flawed" and "not legitimate". It has been pointed out (and I can confirm) that the specific test kits reported by the "independent" journalist as having been employed were intended for use on amniocytes, that is, for amniocentesis on pregnant women. Could off-label use cause wonky test results? (The IOC seems to think so, and their position is supported by reports that Lin Yu-ting was later retested by other agencies and nothing out of the ordinary was found.)

Maybe it will be for the best if Olympic boxing is forced into a hiatus until a new and hopefully less corrupt organization can take it over and institute clear rules and guidelines. Some people here, including me, would not miss it.

@TheOtherMaven The IBA published a rebuttal to various issues which you raise at:

https://www.iba.sport/news/iba-clarifies-the-facts-the-letter-to-the-ioc...

Of note the organization lists the labs they used to conduct the tests. Believe them not, up to you. (I saw a clip of a Piers Morgan panel where Cenk Uygur claimed the Russian/Putin organization fabricated the tests and results.)

  1. Sistem Tip Laboratory from Istanbul (License Number: 194-MRK)
  2. Dr Lal PathLabs from New Delhi

As per the claim: "I should also add that based on her own words she's a blatant gender essentialist - men are XY, women are XX,". Yup, but your argument is with Mother Nature, not a female accredited biologist. Life on earth has the characteristic of having two distinct genders literally across all species of multi-cell life forms. If I may, there seems to be intellectual movement in the West which could be called "gender denialists" who seem to believe there is no such thing sex differences. In fact somewhat of a mystical thing to behold that life on earth have such a trait.

Your rejection of the IBA based on its rejection by the IOC is rather ironic as the history of the IOC is one of massive corruption. One corrupt organization accusing another organization of corruption is good one for the hall of fame for irony.

has more meaning in some societies than in others. Algeria is one of them. They don't have much nuance, and they have zero tolerance for homosexuality or transgenderism. If there were any doubt that an infant was anything but female - they wouldn't be identified and raised as female. Especially in a dirt-poor community like the one Imane Khelif comes from. (Boys are at a premium in situations like that.)

So since Khelif was identified as female at birth, raised as female, is identified on all her papers as female, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera - the likelihood is that she is indeed for all intents and purposes female, and the whole thing has been blown up to grotesque and insane proportions because transphobes and TERFS can't accept that a woman can be plain and strong and still be a woman. (Heck, she's not even that plain, she's just got rather bold features, which is far from unknown all around the Mediterranean.)

Doesn’t she know for certain what’s she’s hearing?

But in other words "I heard you, but this isn’t the time to talk about it. In other other words, STFU! I’m still speaking!"

And the seals clap their fins and bark like the trained animals they are.

There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?

.

The question is, why? Why did FDR drop Henry Wallace from the 1944 Presidential ticket? Why did FDR want Henry Wallace, the consummate New Dealer, with vast popularity and support among key voting-blocs removed? It’s one of the greatest “what-ifs” in American history.

Critics argue that Wallace’s sympathetic view towards the Soviet Union would have weakened American interests. Supporters argue he would have ended the Cold War before it started. I don’t think there will ever be a clear answer to this question, but I wanted to illuminate 8 key drivers.

It’s very obvious why he was replaced. This country would be more likely we want it to be if he had. But the oligarchs including FDR didn’t want what he was offering so he got Bernie'd before Bernie did. Voters don’t choose the candidates and maybe they never did. Caitlin’s newest essay is about why anyone takes part in the election farce or thinking that the person you support will do anything to make our lives better. For 50 years the same people have been dismantled the new deal and the constitution and yet we kept returning them to office so they could keep doing it.
We have the government we deserve. Will people ever wake up and stop taking part in the farce?

@snoopydawg thought of FDR as a leftie. However, he had limits. He was still a capitalist, corporatist, and above all, a Roosevelt, he had to select what at the time was thought to be sort of a hillbilly goober.

Wallace was replaced like that just like we should have done something when the Hellabitch stole the primary. More of Bernie’s supporters rewarded her by voting for her just like they voted for Biden after Obama got everyone to drop out. Elections stolen Iin from of their eyes and not a protest to be seen.

almost in real time, and so far what public revulsion there has been isn’t stopping our Congress, our two duopoly parties, our armed forces, and the elites here & elsewhere in the West from backing it to the hilt.

The internet has made a difference, but as far as actual results — distribution and exercise of life-and-death power — go, that difference doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Offered a choice by Heaven between Aaron Bushnell and Bezalel Smotrich, de facto our earthly Western leadership caste has already decided it’s going with Smotrich.

@lotlizard We see the genocide on the net. We see politicians funded by AIPAC. And we also see arrests for protests, fines, prison sentences, and cops killing and beating dissenters. We see the Ritters and even Tucker Carlsons of the world defunded and fired. Example: Chris Hedges.
Without the net, we would not know our enemies.
Now, we do.
Hope you are ok in your part of the world, friend.
Be careful, stay safe, and know we all appreciate your viewpoints so much. Always.

The rest of the tweet:

But Boeing installed software on Starliner that does not provide for automated undocking. They need a human inside of the Starliner to undock. But the problem is, there would be no way to get the astronaut back on the Space Station, the space suits are too bulky to fit thru the port.

Boeing wants to upload new software while Starliner is in space, but NASA is worried it will fail and then brick Starliner forever, thus blocking one of only two ports where Dragon and others arrive and leave from.

The two astronauts were only supposed to be on the space station for 8 days for this Starliner test flight and have now been there for 2 months. The most likely plan is for their return in February 2025 aboard a Dragon Crew capsule.

Was Benny Kid Parret (sp?) I was a little kid sitting with my dad on the West coast listening to the Friday night fights from Madison Square Garden. My little Italian grandma would sometimes go, so it was a family tradition.

That did it for me. The sound of boxing gloves squeaking is too much. Interesting how many had that experience.

Thank you so much.

Mancini killed Kim Duk-koo. He died later in the hospital from a subdural hematoma. I knew some professional fighters. One died as a result of a street fight while still in the golden gloves phase of his career. The second, suffered a detached retina from a blow in the ring, and stopped fighting. The third had a fairly lengthy pro run.

After Kim was killed from the boxing injury, I remember being quite upset. I watched some Olympic bouts in 88 in Seoul, because they were the only tickets i could get more for the Olympic spectacle than anything else, I saw Mayweather there. These were preliminary bouts. I recall they wore headgear. I didn't stay long. I did see some track and field events but really couldn't tell what was going on. I lost interest after that. I think it was the Mancini fight that did it for me. I don't know how a family could let their loved one into the ring for full contact fighting. I know one jiujitsu fighter quite well, still in the prime of life, who lives with chronic pain, from fighting injuries.

Oh well.
