We know the exact date on which Pakal took the throne because of the fabulous Mayan Calendar, just sayin'. Of course, ab intio, it was based on the intersectionalities of the movements of the planets, whereas our Calendar was based on random shit and myths and especially not the movement of planets, because they didn't, ya know.

The Spanish Armada only lost 5 ships at Gravelines, but the British pounded the Spanish with cannon fire for long hours, weakening the ships, crews, and hulls sufficiently that a subsequent storm and some sloppy navigation pretty much destroyed it. The great Spanish Admiral who kicked mucho ass at Lepanto having bought the farm, some two-bit generalissio, the Duke of Medina-Sidona, who knew nothing of ships, sailing and the sea, was put in charge of the Armada. Oops. Of course his boss, who knew even less, has been referred to as Philip the Sap, so ... .

Fresnel's paper was a masterwork that explained and clarified much and, in the process, destroyed the then last remaining argument against the wave theory of light, which was adopted as a result. Of course, we don't ascribe to the wave theory of light, as such, today, but such is life.
-

Berkowitz, the "son-of-Sam killer" tried to get off on an insanity plea, claiming that he heard voices telling him to do this stuff. It didn't work. (After all, Reagan heard voices too, and they told him what to do, and he did what he was told, and yet he clearly wasn't even remotely crazy, now was he. Well, maybe just a little batshit psycho, but, all the same ... goose, gander.

Throughout history the goddess Eris has been scorned, ignored, related to the second string and treated as a minor deity. This pisses her off and is why everything mankind touches turns to shit. Just ask the Erisians and Discordians. She needs a major temple, pronto.

On this day in history:

-

0615 – Pakal became ruler of Palenque when 12 years old

1148 - This is the official end of the Siege of Damascus and the Second Crusade, even though the whupped crusaders bailed and retreated to Jerusalem on the 28th. Hey, whatever.

1588 - English naval forces under Lord Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake hammered the Spanish Armada under the Duke of Medina Sedona off the coast of Gravelines. Medina Sedona, fwiw, knew zip shit about ships and the sea, whilst Drake was a pirate of reknown.

1818 - Augustin Fresnel submitted his "Memoir on the Diffraction of Light" which pretty much demolished the oldest argument against the wave theory of light.

1836 - The Arc de Triomphe was inagurated. It is momumental architecture, no doubt, but is it art?

1851 - Annibale de Gasparis discovered asteroid 15 Eunomia.

1858 - The US and Japan signed the Harris Treaty, a one-sided treaty signed on the deck of a US warship. This is perhaps the classic example of US "gunboat diplomacy"

1914 - The Cape Cod Canal opened.

1921 - Adolf Hitler became leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party.

1932 - US army infantry, cavalry, and 4 tanks under Douglas MacArthur dispersed the remains of the "Bonus Army" of Veterans, their wives and Children from DC and destroyed their temporary dwellings and possessions.

1950 - The 4 day No Gun Ri Massacre of mostly women and children ended when the US Army 7th Cavalry Regiment that was committing it was withdrawn.

1958 - Ike signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating NASA

1965 - The first 4,000 101st Airborne Division paratroopers arrived in Vietnam

1976 – Son-of-Sam (David Berkowitz) committed his first murder

1987 - Maggie and Frank signed an agreement to build the chunnel. Both Bonaparte and Hitler rolled over in their graves

2005 - Astronomers announced their discovery of the dwarf planet Eris. That's ERIS, the goddess of strife and discord, patroness of discordianism and mother of all of the lesser evils! Bwahahaha, just in case you're wondering why everything has gone to hell. Hail Eris!,

2015 - Microsoft released Windows 10. Did I mention that everything has gone to hell?

Tigers you say?

Chorus:
It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all with the eye of the tiger

To this day I don't know what came first, the song or the movie. Never was a Stallone fan and the plot was, as I understood it, disney with boxing gloves, another of hundred thousand iterations of "The Little Train That Could" that have been producedf for our viewing pleasure.

Love the Retriever + Tiger photo, I think I vaguely recall the story

Just look at what has happened with train accidents since railroad companies went to one train operator.

Now Wall Street wants only one pilot in the cabin. Gee what could go wrong?

I’ve heard more about Mayo Pete since Kamala got the non then during the last 3 years with all the transportation SNAFUs.

...the operational success of Chinese built train-systems around the world.

The Executive branch has no direct control over Amtrack. Incuding Pete.

"Who owns Amtrack?" is the wrong question. The right question is "Who owns the railroad tracks in the US."

The answer to that question tells you everything you want to know about the future of rail travel in the US. (There is no future.) Train infrastructure cannot be developed in nations that allow private parties to own and speculate on unimproved land.

The laws protecting Private Property are the only real asset that the US government owns. Take that away and the legitimacy of the US government would collapse.

Since the 1970s, the political view of the US is that government services such as rail, postal, prison, public health, etc, etc. must turn a profit (for itself or an "official private cartel") or the service must be privatized and degenerated. Capitalism eventually ruins public utilities. People are harmed. Accountability means nothing to them.

The central government of the US is very corrupt (due the obsolete US constitution), and it cannot be compared to any other central government in the world. The Federal government is a parasite and is not accountable to the people who live on the US plantation. That's just the way it is. Voting means nothing at the Federal level.

Lots of people who know this have tried to tell people how it works, including Einstein, who was not pro Israel). Most of the people on the videos we watch here, are aware of this. But there is nothing to be gained by speaking the truth or discussing reality. The truth cuts through all other conversations and ends them. Speaking the truth from positions of power is a death wish.

Just some fun facts. I love train travel and have circled the US continent many times by train, on a single trip.

IMAGINE if you woke up the day after a US Presidential Election and headlines around the the world blared, "The Majority of Americans Refused to Vote in US Presidential Election! What Does this Mean?"

The Federal government is a parasite and is not accountable to the people who live on the US plantation.

Congress just showed that we the people mean nothings to them by letting Netanyahu criticize anyone who doesn’t swear fealty to Israel. They clapped when he called the protesters idiots.

The Kamala does not support the pro Palestinian protesters either. But boy was she supposed of the BLM protesters that caused billions in damages.

Just heard another word salad from her. I’ll post the tweet tonight.

As for privatization, I read how Biden insisted that Poland privatize all state run services before they were accepted into NATO. He has always been a mean bastard.

to which I would add, almost certainly terminated for attempting to cause peace to break out.

Our first long-distance fall migrant showed up two days ago, a male Rufous Hummingbird, which promptly took over a feeder, of course.

Yesterday I saw this article on the RI dragonfly flight that QMS mentioned... offered a great contribution to and from AI. Which is brand new and already eating it own BS, e.g. it is scatophagus.
https://nypost.com/2024/07/28/us-news/supersized-swarm-of-dragonflies-ov...

end of article, and I quote: "Dragonflies feed heavily on mosquitoes and various flies but have also been known to prey on smaller mammals such as hummingbirds."

Hummingbirds (feathers) are small mammals (fur) now! Where are the mammary glands? I never saw them!Further, I know of no incidence of dragons eating hummers (Praying Mantis will). But odes taking them is not really a thing. If it ever happened it is exceedingly rare. I have been on dragon message boards 25 years and never heard of it reported.

We're #1!

...after searching for some time. Thought I had saved it. I had to reconstruct from English (incorrectly) on google translate and then search on google and got lucky.

狐假虎威

The fox borrows the tiger's might (pinyin: hú jiǎ hǔ wēi) is an idiom that comes from a fable. The earliest allusion to the idiom comes from " Strategies of the Warring States : Strategy of Chu I".
The original meaning of 狐假虎威 is that the fox borrows the power of the tiger to scare the beasts. Later, it was used to describe someone who relies on the power of others to oppress or intimidate others. In a sentence, it mainly serves as a predicate, attributive, or object, and has a derogatory meaning. [1]

This is unrelated but I found it at the same time when I was reading an essay on Chinese opening up-

韜光養晦
Ever since Deng Xiaoping, the Chinese approach has been based on taoguang yanghui - hide one's capabilities and bide one's time.

So the NGOs and the Lao govt agreed to do a conservation thing over by the border of N Vietnam. Nam Et Phou Louey or something. 4,000 square kilometers. It's big. The NGOs got involved and they and the Lao govt decided it would be cool to forcibly move all the villages out. Govt wants kids to learn to speak Lao and go to school etc. Conservation groups didn't want villages competing for prey. Locals eat a ton of muntjac and wild pig, the two staple foods of tigers.

There are also laws against the primitive black powder muskets people hunt with. They are very primitive, nothing you'd shoot a tiger with, homemade black powder etc. So anyone going or coming from the conservation area was searched for wildlife. There is also a trade in dried civit, bamboo rat etc.

Camera trap photos of tigers, studies by local biologists. There were maybe 3 or 4 tigers by genetic material in scat. Problem was with no villages, there's no one to care about the forests, so police and army came in cut a bunch, sent the logs to Vietnam, and even trapped out the tigers and sold it too in Vietnam. No more tigers, lots of forest gone, maybe a thousand people pushed into poverty. Poverty there is different than here, kids and old people die.
