Open Thread - Wed. April 13, 2016 - Easy Riding (?) Edition
My husband belongs to a group of about a dozen guys who like to do adventure trips each year. These trips usually involve either back packing or cycling. One year, eight of them back packed for a week in the Smokey Mountains National Park. Another year, only three of them cycled for one week through Washington state and ended up in Portland, Oregon. They each carried forty pounds of gear on their bicycles and camped out most of the time. A couple of years ago, a larger group cycled from Colorado down to Albuquerque, NM. On this trip, they used a sag truck to carry their gear. My husband did not do this trip because he had broken his collar bone while training for it. This year, he and six of his friends rode the Assault on the Carolinas, each with varying degrees of success. Cycling seems to come naturally for my husband.
I used to ride but do not any more. Bicycles and I do not have a very compatible relationship. I learned this fact the hard way.
Back in the 1980's, when I was in my forties, I was a very good age group runner on the local scene. One year, I won my age group in every race. Along the way I met some other women who ran in the same part of the field as I did. Because they were not in my age group, we would train together. It made me a better runner as a result. It was also through training, I fell in with a bunch of triathletes who encouraged me to train for a triathlon. I was much older and was flattered to be training with them, so fools rush in.
For the uninitiated, a triathlon involves swimming, cycling, and running, usually in that order. Since I was a very good runner, I thought that I could transition to a triathlon fairly easily. Yeah, another foolish assumption. So one day, I went with one of my triathlon friends to the local cycling shop to buy a decent bike to train and use in the triathlon. I bought a very nice and beautiful bike, shoes, helmet, gloves, and kit, all of which made me look like I really knew what I was doing. Then I joined the cycling club to build up my cycling skills and to train for the cycling portion of the triathlon.
Next, I signed up for a swim conditioning class, which is what all the triathletes did as part of their training. The class was in the evenings at FSU pool and used the long course. I was very nervous about the swimming portion of the triathlon, but if one is to have a weakness in this event, the swim is probably the best part in which to be weak. Still, I did not want to embarrass myself in my first triathlon. In the swim conditioning class, the coach would put the weakest swimmers in the outside lanes and the best ones in the center lanes. At first, I started in the outside lane, but found that I was doing very well in the swim class and eventually ended up in one of the center lanes. I also found that long course suited me very well which can be an advantage in a triathlon because the swim portion is usually conducted in a lake or other open water. Swimming went swimmingly good.
Meanwhile, I began riding with the cycling club on weekends and at least one week night with a group of my triathlete friends. While I looked like a pro with all my beautiful gear, I rode like an 85 year old woman. Despite my aerobic capacity from running, riding a bicycle never came easy and pedaling uphill was rough, very rough. I was always way in the back of the pack. I distinctly remember that I once got dropped on a very steep climb by my triathlete friends. This is not rude. It is the rule of the road on training rides. If you cannot keep up, you get dropped and you are on your own. Embarrassed and humiliated, I had to walk up that hill while my friends rode off and left me. By the time I reached the top of the hill, I never wanted to get back on my bike again. But reality stepped in when I realized that I was still over three miles from our cars. So with tears in my eyes, I forced myself to ride in very slowly, knowing that I needed to get much more accomplished soon or I would have no one to ride with.
Meanwhile my swimming was progressing beautifully. But try as I would, I never really got much better on the bicycle. Still, I was determined to do at least one triathlon even if I finished dead last.
Finally, the day of my first triathlon arrived. It was a short one at a local lake. I bought a new swim suit for it and prepped my stuff for the transition to the bike. But I decided to do a short warm up on my bike before the start. As I was returning on my bike to the parking lot at the lake, suddenly a car pulled out right in front of me. I hit my brakes and immediately flew over the handlebars and down to the pavement with a big thud landing on my left shoulder. As people were helping me up, I said "do not touch my left arm, I think I separated my shoulder." The next thing I asked was if my brand new swimsuit was ripped, which it was not. After loading my bike into my car for me, a friend took me to the emergency room where it was confirmed that I had indeed separated my shoulder.
And thus, my first and last triathlon ended before it began. Afterwards, riding a bike was never fun again unless I was going slow on a flat surface. Thus I learned the hard way that some things are not to be. Riding well on a bicycle was never meant to be for me.

Thanks for the story. I can well understand the 'some things weren't meant to be' sentiment. Feeling a bit dejected today, and it's been accelerating. Can't summon the good cheer to continue the saga of going to Ohio.
I'm beginning to have grave doubts about the efforts being made here in Philly. I've offered and offered the Chateau as a branch office--complete with wifi, bathroom, refrigerator, and 9-to-9 access, and I'm hearing "will pass it up to my boss," and "have to do vetting...", "we're concentrating on another part of town." By my slightly outdated count there are 880K Dems in Philly. With 5 offices, that roughly 175K per office. (Extrapolate consequences)
Maybe I'll just go back to bed.

Morning GG I am envious of
anyone that can compete or even think of creating in triathlons. The cycling and swimming present no problems - have done both competitively though not presently. I am a fair weather cyclist now and occasional swimmer (we moved away from the lake where I used to swim about ten years ago). The event that stopped me was running - I just wasn't designed for it. I can walk for miles over just about any terrain and currently do an hour at four miles an hour five times a week on a treadmill but running is a mystery to me.
Coming off a bike is scary, I have done a few times but never came away with anything worse than cuts and scrapes. Even so, it was tough getting back on each time - Last time was around 15 years ago and not sure if I would make it back on now. Saying that, I have a friend who is 76 and he broke a wrist last summer and he is back up in the saddle and happy so who knows?

Some things we have to learn the hard way. Cycling can be dangerous, but I never thought about it until that accident. I am not a brave person, so I was instantly cured of any delusions of grandeur.

Less than one week with puppy and she slept on the bed for part of the night. No accidents. She's not a snuggler, she roamed for sleep spots. Things are going well, she entertains herself alot, at least looks at me when I say 'Skya', came acclimated to use a litter box, and has only destroyed paper products. It's good to have a companion, I lasted two weeks from my pet loss, which I knew was coming.

Separated shoulder? It hurts to roll over in bed. I did mine hurtling from a Honda CR125 to the ground. I had gone back to college and was without insurance, so I just toughed it out.
Working out is a lifestyle thing. Once you build it in, you don't feel right without working out. I am on 20+ years of a few times a week. Although, they are getting further apart. I can not leave Sweetie @home alone anymore. Between caregiver injuries, wrist & shoulder, and only cooking for one, I have dropped ~35# and 10#-15# on my workout weights. I am thinking of taking a really long walk once my responsibilities here clear up.

Not much they can do about it. Mine was a simple separation so they put my arm in a sling and had me do some exercises to strengthen my shoulder and to keep it from freezing up. I still have a nice bump on my shoulder where it was separated. I mostly walk now. I gave up running due to plantar fasciitis. We just got in from walking the dogs this morning. Now that the weather is getting warmer, I will be power walking regularly.
I keep thinking about you and your sweetie. It is tough being a caregiver. My Mom did that for ten years and it took a toll on her. I hope you have someone to come in and watch sweetie so you can get out a couple of times each week. You owe it to yourself. (((hugs)))

Going to give it a shot. Kids are already fed, and I just had to deal with a Windows "Update" for a product they supposedly no longer support. Add in the wonderful "Get Windows 10" crap, and I'm angry with my current system enough to want to get away from it for a while.

but I actually like Windows 10. I upgraded two machines at the same time, one from 7 and one from 8. 8 was almost as horrible as Vista but 7 I liked. So far, touch wood, 10 has been a vast improvement on both.

Is where we take all our dead computers. They do good work here in Portland and are a part of what makes this place a real community. Glad to hear there still going. When my xp died 3 years ago I dug my heels in and decided I would get a Windows7. I asked the geeks on a dkos thread what to buy and every one of them said find a Windows7. No vista no Windows10 or whatever was the newest version of Windows
It took me weeks to find an outlet that offered Windows7. I won't buy anything from Amazon however I finally found an Acer desktop Wnidows7 at a site called New Egg. I'm happy I held out. I still want my Windows98 back as I hate having Bill Gates automatically flinging my files all over the place. I may be a Ludditte but I like being able to manually organize my files and know where stuff is located.
Glad to here your going to be working with Free Geeks. Someone told me the other day that they sell inexpensive smart phones they build. Shah needs one for business as his flip phone is too limited as far as e-mails and other stuff goes. I guess you will be coming to side of the river as we live pretty close to Free Geek. Glad your getting out of the house and dealing with people as well as machines.

I really enjoy talking tech, so it was fun. I may be able to skip their "Basic Computer part Identification" class by testing out, since I'm pretty knowledgeable, but I think the class would be fun to take since I've never TAKEN one...
Just talking to people was nice though. They have lots of good parts for cheap, so worst case scenario at least I can pick up parts for a significant discount.
(ONly downside is they have NO classes in installing software to a blank hard drive/NEW computer, which is what I really wanted. They preload their software onto the hard drives prior to installation.)

When I was much younger, I was an insane runner. 10k every weekend, marathons, ultra-marathons. But bicycles and I have never gotten along. No matter how strong I am...there is something about the geometry of my body, and I just can't seem to get going, up a hill. So, you're not alone.
My latest passion is kayaking...building one now for a long distance trip up Puget Sound, late this summer. Kayaking seems to work just fine.

Yep, you're right, geometry probably had a lot to due with my not being able to cycle well. As for running, I ran races every weekend. In fact, I ran to race, not for fitness. Training was usually about 50 miles per week and even went into the 70's for marathon training. I loved long distance and preferred races over 10K. I even once ran an ultra, but was not trained for it and ended up injured as a result. All that came to a halt when my plantar fasciitis got to be too bad. And bio-mechanics was the reason for my plantar fasciitis. Of course, as most runners know, the cure for plantar fasciitis is to stop running. LOL
I hope you will write an essay on your kayak building and trip.

I try to catch a Bernie rally online every day. Its such an up

I'm a believer in the power of positive thoughts. I have been hypnotized and given a suggestion that actually worked despite me not believing that I was actually under when the suggestion was made. About a decade ago I needed another operation on my leg that was messed up in a motorcycle-car confrontation, waayy back in the 60s when I was a just coming of age. After reading about the possibility of controlling the amount of bleeding during surgery I meditated on it the night before and following the operation my doctor told how unusual it was that I bled so little during the procedure. So to help me over those moments when my despair over how rigged this shit is and how close to impossible it will to overcome, I focus on the image of Bernie, on the podium with Jane, being sworn in next January. And then I send some $ to ActBlue.

Just heard that Jeff Merkley will be supporting Bernie Sanders for President!!! First Senator ( may there be many to come!). So excited that the first one to break to our side is from Oregon.
This is awesome!
Merkley is one of the few Senators that I really respect. He seems to have a big picture perspective on most issues. I saw where he wrote an op-ed in the New York Times to announce his endorsement. It also comes out just before the New York primary. I think we may see more top politicians now come out for Sanders.

Jeff Merkley is the one pol.I feel good about voting for. Strange because when he first ran I was not that excited about him as he seemed to be too 'moderate'. When ever I have called his office the staff is responsive and actually seems to listen and care. Wyden however has a machine that sends you into a loop and finally hangs up. Shah worked for Merkley's campaign here in Portland when he first ran. He like Bernie actually does have some integrity and is honest. He impressed me when he tried to get rid the senates 60+= a majority kabuki nonsense.

It may be "a rule of the road," but it is still rude. A lot of the rules of the road, here in this world, are rude.
I don't believe in rude rules.
Maybe that car that made you fly over the handlebars and get the bad separated shoulder was sent to message you that you do not need to be doing triathlons with the rude people. If you had continued, maybe there would have been serious worseness.
It is like that story, I think about Elijah, who was traveling around, and he stopped at this one house, and the people there were very nice to him, but after he left, their cow died. And then he went to another house, and there the people were very rude. But before he left, he repaired a crumbling wall on the property.
And the head-scratching acolytes, they wondered: "how come the nice people got a dead cow, and the bad people, you fixed their wall?"

Triathletes tend to be the most competitive of all the athletes I ever met. I knew going in that if I was dropped, I would be on my own. Runners will never drop another runner while training though. I was better off being and hanging with runners.

hi gg, so busy listening to the BNR's videos of Sanders
speeches from NY, I haven't read through your OT yet, but concerning bicycling ... I have a good old sturdy German bike that I brought over here ... and never rode.
Now, getting really rusty and losing muscles, I am scared to ride it. But I have still committed myself to do it when I am on wide paved park waus with no walkers and runners being in my way. That would be only in the early morning in our nearby lake and park. So, I give you an update, if I ever make it this spring and summer.

tough competitive lady. You are a great story teller, even if the story ends with a dislocated shoulder, which is really bad. Well, I am a real lousy loser when it comes to exercise and do any sort of competitive sports. When I was in highschool, I was a lousy swimmer and always the last. The only thing I good do a decent job was long-distance running. Now I am just like an old dog that hasn't any intention anymore to wag with the tail and run.

All I do now is walk. And three miles is about all I can take mentally. LOL

and all of you cc99%er's. My bike is in my barn/garage this spring and I have only ridden once. I'm a city bike rider who for years has ridden my bike daily when weather allows as a form of transportation like shopping, running errands or just pedaling around my neighborhood for fun ,exercise and to help blow out my mind out some. This season I got it out and decided to use it to go shopping.
Our neighborhood has been severely gentrified and updated in the last year. Density and infill cause the city says it's green. They seemed to have moved the burbs into our neighborhood. This demolishing and rebuilding of the SE was supposed to reduce car traffic as all the new yuppie hipster demographic were going to be using bike or public transportation. lol.
The sleepy narrow backstreet bike routes I use are now filled with fast traffic with drivers that are rude, arrogant and fast. The ratio of honky earth destroying SUV's with tinted windows and jacked up giant GMC truck's has increased to where they outnumber cars that actually fit on streets built in 1914. I haven't taken it our since. I've been walking to the store and trying to take walks daily. I like a destination when walking or biking. I think I'll get a new red flyer wagon to haul my groceries home by foot.
Shah's the runner in this house. He really fast and tries to run daily. I think he's a natural sprinter and on his runs up to Mt.Tabor park has had to learn to slow his pace down. He's been so busy with work lately he's having trouble getting back into his daily running regime. One thing about getting to be an old coot is you really need to keep moving. They aren't joking around when they say use it or lose it.

We need
to refocus our lives away from our individual single occupancy vehicles. Our public streets should be first walkable and bicycle friendly. Our society has been way too skewed towards the automobile.
In my old age (I will be 69 soon), walking briskly is now my exercise of choice. It is probably the best exercise for anyone of any age. But, for me, it is not as much fun as it was when I was running competitively. Trophies were not that important unless they were hand thrown pottery.

As anyone heard about a rally results or updates regarding Bernie in New York City this early evening. I believe it is in Washington Square Park, but have not seen any news coverage on it (surprise).

if anyone else (Trump, Clinton, Cruz, and Kasich) held a rally in New York that draw 3,000 people it would make all the news. Heck Clinton's biggest rally to date might be 1,000 people.
There is not one damn new site that is carrying or even noting this rally.
There are at least 10,000 to up to 30,000 people rallying for a candidate and not a freaking peep- this is the bullshit that needs to end in this country. Media bias, reporting crap non-events- I know lets check out the Kardashians are doing or report on some non important thing.
I am freaking sick and tired of this crap and we need to change it- sorry for the rant but I am pissed by this double standard that is applied in this nation and very few people acknowledge or challenge it.
