DC deadwood

open thread_117.jpg

Have spent the last two days chopping out the dead wood in the forest belt that runs along the creek. Junk tree saplings 30' plus that didn't make it to the top of the canopy, and subsequently died. I have cut at least 50 of them, and then dragged them down and out of cedar and maple trees. Got two truck loads of 'em and will try to burn it all before the annual burn ban comes into effect.
Hot dogs tonight! Really long sticks though.
Everything here is still lush and green.
Last year the grass stayed green all summer long, with only rain for water. Must be the temperate rainforest climate.
Garden is looking good, and got my first Ranier cherries from my three year old sapling. Stella cherry is not producing yet, nor the apricot. But both are looking healthy and growing tall.
Peach tree is not doing so well. Not sure it's gonna make it.
Going to try to get a couple of apple trees going this summer, but it's so hard to choose which ones. They all grow well in Washington state.
Want to get home (Vancouver) before the comedy show (Presidential debate) so as not to miss any awkward moments, in which there should be a lot of them.
I say awkward in that Trump is tasked with promising to do something for the American people to win their vote, while Biden is going to bask in all the things he has done for those same people to win their vote.
We know who the deplorables are going to vote for. And we know who the dyed in the wool Democrats will vote for.
In play are the majority of Americans who are neither.
Of course, this assumes there is no election tampering or fixes.
We live in interesting times.
Enroute home this morning so replies will be a tad spotty.
What's going on?
Thread is open.

small at this stage, apples ditto. Apricots have been falling in small numbers for about a week, turning a very nice orange hue on tops - probably need to pick really soon or the birds and squirrels will get them all. Gopher got one tomato plant, but other is holding up fine.

Everything political is a morass and approaching near maximum suckage. Enjoy your "debate", but I lack enough spare time to spend any on that. In fact, I'm already behind in the days doings, so should get going muy pronto.

A few minutes ago and found our front door wide open, the keys still in the lock.
Been gone since Saturday morning and absolutely nothing amiss.
Whew!
I guess we live in a safe housing tract.
We will remember this forever.
Thanks for your post.

@earthling1 I once left my law office front door open for a weekend. No theft occurred. However, a young guy got out of prison, needed money for meth. He went to 5 securely locked offices, broke through windows, stole hard drives. My office was one of the lucky 5. (2 law offices, one hair salon, one courthouse annex building, and one resale store.)
Cops got him within 2 days, but made no effort to recover the stolen property.
Meth must be really awesome.

@on the cusp Hi OtC,

My very good friend that was Pres. of the Chamber of Comm. for Fredericksburg for most of two decades, owned the four storage unit rental places around the town. Three were security fenced, one was not. The only one to never have a unit broken into was the unfenced one! Smile

P.S. Just in Case... if you need a good song on a loop for your waiting room... Just in Case, if you're not playing it already... I would if I were an attorney... just in case...

@dystopian You'd think a pre-nuptual would take the fight out of it all, but --- I just litigated 2 knock down, drag out divorces that had a pre-nupt. Remember the woman who insisted on topping her property list agreement, placed in public record, regarding her panties and bras? She forgot to buy them with separate $ accounts, so they were community property. For reasons I will never know, she had some concern that it was vital to get them into her property column. I made it a point NOT to let her tell me why they were important! LOL!

If all the independents could vote Stein

to "elect" either dastardly don or genocide Joe.
Quite sure Diebold has other plans on counting.

I am jealous of your fruit trees!
The one I enjoyed most was the peach tree. I studied pruning, was good at it, but winds blew away the blooms year after year, and I would wind up with 1 or 2 peaches.
The apples I love and can no longer find are the Mackintosh variety. Perfect texture, perfect taste, and no longer sold anywhere here.
They used to be on the shelf from about November to February. It was so nice to have them for snacks through the various holidays in those months.
Oh, well...
My commitment to watching the debate is to watch the Prez make an ass of himself. If I watch clips of the freezes later, I will be told I am watching deep-fakes.
Diebold will make sure the right candidate wins the election. I am just treating this as the bread and circus that it is.
Thanks for the OT, pal!

the debate will be cringeworthy. But the more cringeworthy the more "in your face" stupid the American electorate will appear to be.
It would not surprise me in the least that 2028 could bring a damn horse for POTUS.

Known simply as yook i oh tae 六二五代 in Korean. ( None of the online dictionaries will give me the hangeul script. ) Of course, it refers to 6.25.1950 when North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel en masse.

I'm having difficulty calling up initial news reports on this in English on youtube. I'll post this 2 minute South Korean video which shows how the South Korean president is exploiting this day, along with the US Forces Korea ersatz "UN Command" to bolster Yoon's failing far right authoritarian administration. You don't really need the audio, the images tell enough. That's what it's for, the imagery. The South Korean armed forces also conducted live firing of Jeonmu rocket batteries, paratrooper drops, and sealift movement of tactical vehicles today. North Korea resumed sending trash balloons to the South. Of those that landed in South Korea, most landed in Seoul. The blob has been saying and it is being televised in the last couple of days that US nuclear weapons need to be forward deployed to South Korea in a joint "shared mode" like NATO or South Korea needs to develop their own. Kurt Campbell said he didn't think that was necessary in a recent interview.

The phony Yoon is doing his patriotic act. Yoon who never served in the armed forces by getting some doctor to say his vision wasn't good enough. He was out drinking and partying while his contemporaries were in boot camp and going on forced marches. Yoon described the newly declared North Korean- Russian relationship as an "anachronism" which is extremely ironic because his political support comes largely from the over 60 demographic which is unable to divest its anachronistic cold war views.

Ok found this very short video of Yoon visiting the "Big Stick" USS Roosevelt today for the ceremonies. The reference to Roosevelt's big stick is ironic beyond belief, but I won't get into the history of the Russo-Japanese war.

When I read IF Stone's book on the Korean conflict, it was the first time I became aware, that both the North and South wanted a war, and that South Korean units, on the US created 38th Parallel dividing line, actually attacked North Korean units in the months before June 25. Since then, I've seen this reported in a couple of other history books. Syngman Rhee had also authorized military repression of South Koreans who didn't accept the US military government or occupation, there were massacres in Jeju and Yeosu. He also placed hundreds of thousands of South Korean "communist sympathizers" in detention camps, and had them slaughtered in the early stages of the war (the Bodo massacres). So it was basically a civil war.

Bodo League Massacres

The Bodo League massacre (Korean: 보도연맹 학살; Hanja: 保導聯盟虐殺) was a massacre and a war crime against communists and alleged communist-sympathizers (many of whom were civilians who had no connection to communism or communists) that occurred in the summer of 1950 during the Korean War. Estimates of the death toll vary. Historians and experts on the Korean War estimate that between 60,000[2] and 200,000 people were killed.[3]

The massacre was committed by the government forces of president Syngman Rhee and falsely blamed on the communists led by North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.[4] The South Korean government made efforts to conceal the massacre for four decades. Survivors were forbidden by the government from revealing it, under threat of being treated as communist sympathizers; public revelation carried with it the threat of torture and death. During the 1990s and onwards, several corpses were excavated from mass graves, resulting in public awareness of the massacre.[5][6] Half a century after the massacre, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission investigated this among other incidents that were largely kept hidden from history, unlike the well-publicized North Korean executions of South Korean right-wingers.[7]

...for the OT. Vancouver must be nice. Cyrus Janssen lived there for a couple of years during the Meng Wanzhou Huawei episode, another episode of US extradition.

We cut the last of our huge trees in our small yard just before hurricane season last year. The place looks naked without them. My neighbor had one huge oak limb fall on his roof and ruin it, so now his are gone too. I'm sure the electric bills for cooling will go up here.

It's so hot, I took smokey to the park where are still a lot of old oak trees and some shade. On the way, by chance I saw some rocket taking off from Kennedy Space Center after it was already airborne. At first I wondered what it was but recognized it, when I saw the arching vapor trail form. A little while after it was out of sight the sound came roaring like thunder.

Hi all, Hey E1,

The fruit trees sound great. We have Pecans here but due to drought it has been five years since the last good crop. A couple of our yard trees have died. Most of the folks here lost their Peaches due to the drought as well. Trying to have a garden in Texas makes Bill Murray in Caddyshack seem like the Cub Scouts. People lock the doors here to keep the pigs and coons out.

As for the DC deadwood, which would be all of it, I would suggest burning it and spreading the ashes in salted earth.

I had to cut some small saplings to access them. So, throwing out the leaved branches drew a young doe and two brand new babies to munch them like candy. The fawns got within 5' of me, watching intently as I threw more branches to them.
They were so cute. Earthling 2 took a photo of them but it didn't cone out very good.
I'll get a good shot next time and post it.

@enhydra lutris Hi EL!

Very cool! Gotta love baby wrens! A wren box in a garden is the best pest control. We have about 8 bird boxes around the place here, most get used, and both Carolina and Bewick's nest here. They get along fine. A Carolina Wren - or two, they often duet, is our alarm clock, often a bit earlier than actually required, and they are loud as hell.

Is to boil them in beer first and then roast them. Cut slits so the beer gets inside.
And for dessert buy fun size Milky Way bars and roast them SLOWLY over the fire. Trust no…you will thank me for suggesting that.

Thanks for reminding me I need to get a chainsaw so I can cut firewood. Getting a small exo electric one since I already have the battery.
