Friday Night Photos Pollinator Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 05/17/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Pollinators are an incredible group of animals that ensure the health of our ecosystems by helping plants to reproduce. Without them life as we know it would cease to exist. 1,200 crops and over 180,000 species of plants require pollination. That's a lot of work for some very small critters. Most of that work is done by bees, flies, beetles, butterflies, and moths.

the hollies out front. The bee box house I built years ago is now a go to place
for the mason bees. Wonder why it took them so long to find it?
This is my partner's idea of a defensive strategy on a board game.
and a shot of a lilac w/out bees just picked, still dripping wet and sweet smelling
thanks for the shots social!
and another from Benefit -- can't help myself
Hi, QMS.
The mashmallow defense. I haven't seen that used in ages.
Your lilacs look like fertile ground for the pollinators.
Love the Jethro Tull selections. It's been a long time since I've heard "To Cry You A Song".
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Hi Q
Thank you for the Tull and the Lilacs. I sure miss the fragrance of Lilacs.
Benefit!
Great strategy in gamery... LOL
Benefit rules. I can sing every word of it, just not all on key. I play To Cry you a Song riff... Have the vinyl here of course...
P.S. have a great trip!

the chorus of the spring peepers in the ponds is melodic now!
Soon the tree frogs will join in the rhapsody.
The sounds of spring.
I only hear frogs
during the winter months where I live. This time of year I hear the Cassin's Kingbird calling in the early morning hours. They start in around 4am and go until a little after sunup.

the peepers start about dusk

continue on till about midnight
tree frogs go on all night but seem
to fluctuate depending on groupie
noise - a couple start then the rest
join in. Kinda fun to listen to the lingo.
that is a great song SP!
Their 'dawn chorus' singing (which is really pre-dawn) of Cassin's Kingbird is outstanding... so excited about the new day coming... listened to many a morn from my sleeping bag somewhere waiting for it to get light enough to bird.

Watch out for those sleeper waves, I
hear that they're huge up there.

Looks like fun
Have a good time in Maine.

Great pics, sp, thanks. I personally have few pollinator pics,
but here's one from Alaska many years ago.
I generally don't get pics of these, maybe simply because there are tons around
This is more my kind of bug photo, a garden spider hatch on an outdoor hose reel

got lots of them here
it is weird how in the middle of the night
while reading in my chair
they come out and watch me
we have a subliminal discussion
about spider versus human relations
Yeah, they're out there. Some source once stated that, on
average, you are never more than 4 feet from a spider.

Hi, EL
Nice selection of pollinators. I was seeing a lot of Monarch butterflies around here about a year ago but they've been scarce the last few months. I see lots of spiders in my yard all the time but I have yet to see a spider hatch. Hopefully some day soon.

Jumping spiders are cool.
They're regular visitors in my backyard. This is one I spotted in one of my Rosemary plants a few years ago.

Hi Social
Funny and great music choice to go with the busyness of bees and other pollinators, including the human variety ; )
Thank you for your photos and humour. I might refer to you in the future as Social in So Cal.
Have a fun weekend!

Hi, Janis
Nice variety of patterns. Is that some kind of fruit in the last photo?

It's a purple passionfruit
Have you tried any, they are deliciously sweet and tart.
I've never had passionfruit
I'll have to give on a try.

nice pics!
Neat photos as always. Lovely seashells in your seagrass. Neat patterns, and nice passion, fruit.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
GREAT bug shots SP!
Whaddyknow, a Milkweed Bug on that Milkweed. Whooda thunk? Isn't that 'Tropical Milkweed' in Image 4?
Hummingbirds are fairly important pollinators for many plants too. Sunbirds fill that niche in the 'old world'. Bats too deserve mention, Saguaro is bat pollinated.
Everything is connected.
Thanks for the outstanding shots and OT SP!

'Everything is connected'
As Einstein says that's what you get when you 'look deep into nature'. Thank you dystopian for your sig line, plus your eyes on nature. It's always appreciated.
I'm not all that knowledgable
when it comes to plants or bugs so I did a search and it appears it is indeed tropical milkweed and a milkweed bug. Thanks for the identification.

Hi pixelators
Hi all,
I gotta fly so a hit and run...
A male Yellow Warbler was at the bath last weekend... finally got a shot showing some of the red streaks of breeding plumage. Is brighter than here in shade, and gets even more extensive too.
As much as they feed in flowers, surely warblers, vireos, orioles, and other birds are important pollinators too.
Happy trails all!

Honestly d, you have the cutest birds ever visiting you
It's such a pleasure to see them. They look so personable!
Hi, dystopian
What a beautiful looking bird. I seen them at Santee Lakes every once in a while. Have yet to get a photo of one.

Visiting here every weekend is such
a treat for me. Sp, your next-to-last photo tickled my funnybone. Wonderful images, all. Haven't seen bees, but the butterflies and moths are showing up. I think I mentioned seeing a Monarch near my orchids. Anywho, storms and storm season are the news here. The Panhandle has been getting slammed. It's not even H3ll/Hurricane Season yet! Liked the tunes, too. Stay safe, you all. Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Hi, orlbucfan
I was at an orchid exhibit on Wed. There was one orchid there that smelled like Vick's Vapor Rub. Not sure if that helps it attract pollinators or not but it sure attracted a lot of people.
