Open Thread 5/4/24: Odds and ends
Good morning, good people!
Didn't shop for basic necessities this week, but gas is holding at $3.20 per gal (reg.) in these parts.
Monday was a day of flooded, impassable roads. Then, Wednesday night rains and associated flooding caused court to be cancelled Thursday, and at noon, the message came from the county judge that the courthouse would be closed until Monday. Then, on Thursday, a 2 pm scheduled zoom mediation was cancelled about 2 hours ahead of time due to weather. Internet would have not been a given, since 4 of the 5 participants were in a flooded area. My internet blinked several times, but no prolonged outage, thank goodness.
Well, the infamous pastel colored underwear case was settled in mediation with my client receiving all her bras and panties,and the remaining contention was golf clubs purchased at a Goodwill shop and my client demanded $25 when they came up missing. She got it. A tough, tough negotiation. The mediator was awesome. He understood when I had to go off camera/screen and take breaks.
As I write this Friday evening, mockingbirds are close by, and I believe they are intentionally distracting me. Srsly.
I am heartened by the news that our military base in Niger days are numbered. And in Chad, and other countries in Africa. Thinking of Africa, I will show some photos I took in Kenya and Tanzania.

And anything else. Posting anything in an OT captures the current events, and we always depend on commenters to take it to the limit.

We are a wet and muddy mess around here. My landscaping crew can't clear out bushes and scrub trees for another week. My intent was to clear off a couple of acres before summer heat sets in. Good intentions do not necessarily work out well.
It is very interesting that Niger brought in the Russian military personnel before the US made a plan to appoint a committee to make a plan to run by the military who then plan a meeting to revise the plan and then send it to top military brass to plan a meeting to review the plan. QMS, I can't make this shit up. We pulled out of Viet Nam and Afghanistan without all those meetings, didn't we? Aren't we the ones that are poking the bear?
US is losing its' standing globally, thanks to our subservience to Israel. Hell will be unleashed when Rafah is attacked. I believe that will be the lit fuse.

Thunder towards the east, 90% chance of heavy rain this afternoon and all night long. So far, no deaths have been reported, and I hope that remains the statistic.
The Trinity River is the big problem, although the San Jacinto River is causing big problems as well.
The Trinity River Authority manages the huge dam. If they release water ahead of a storm, they flood the county downstream. If they hold the gates shut, they flood upstream. Meanwhile, some neighbors stopped by this morning. They have evacuated their homes, which have 2 feet of water in them. Folks below the dam are getting around in small boats.

Stay safe and enjoy your time at home. Heading out for bike ride and to check out the river and hopefully some Farmer’s Market goodies. Since I have lived here in Central Texas, the bridge has been shut down twice for fear it would wash away. Hasn’t happened.
Loved your Africa shots. My sister and I had a trip planned to Kruger National Park and Covid got in the way. We are going on this trip this summer and hope she will be suitably awed by the animals. It is heartening to read about the demands the US leave various countries in Africa and the spin put on it by the media.

Our bridges are holding, but there are big chunks of pavement that are being lifted and swept away. I can't drive my little sports car. If I hit one of those potholes, I would destroy it.
With heavy rains forecast for today, tonight, and tomorrow, I figure schools and maybe county government offices will be closed part of next week. It is reported by locals that this flooding is much worse than what happened during Hurricane Harvey.

On my first trip to Africa,
it was specifically scheduled in the dry season for maximum wildlife viewing. We visited 2 camps in S. Africa, Now, could you explain why, while watching that performance, I got some weird lump and my throat and watery eyes? wtf?and it rained. We were in an open land rover. I had packed a tan rain jacket with a hoodie. I expected some breeze, but was treated to a light misting rain. That was the song in my head for the rest of the trip. I remember baby zebras playing in the rain like it was some party time.
We are shopping for a generator in anticipation of a really bad hurricane season. I feel your dread.
My neighbors live in bottom land, a flood zone. They have no ability to insure for flood damage. That also makes it hard to sell their property and start over on higher ground.
I am on a ridge, and always have a clear way for the 2 miles it takes to get to town and to my office, but that is the extent of clear highways. That is the extent I can drive. Right now, any patient would have to be transported by the first responders via life flight to any hospital. 4 hospitals within 35 miles, and you can't get an ambulance to any of them.

Our tour had taken us for an afternoon with the Masai Mara in one of their villages. We visited inside a home, saw the cows, jumped and danced with them, and I have several pieces of their art and crafts decorating the walls of my office. I framed one of their hand woven cloth skirts.
Imagine standing down lions and charging hippos with a knife and a spear.
The guides said those warriors were REAL warriors.
If I needed to go to the bathroom at any time, day or night, a warrior walked me to and from the tent.
I felt perfectly safe.

We have folks nodding over on street corners. Havent seen any lately, though. I walked up to the Needle Exchange a few years ago to deliver some food. Young lady asked me if I was there for a Fentanyl test kit? One of my two or three remaining relatives has assumed the burden of a meth and heroin habit and all the clarity that provides. Only has four kids who will be having to deal with that for the rest of their lives. My feelings of free choice seem to be challenged by the extent someone might take them, and the nature of the dangers. Much of this crisis is related to the class related abandonment of the less fortunate.

Guys working on oil rigs 30 or 40 years ago did crystal meth to work double shifts, but miraculously, they quit it when they changed jobs.
I know meth is everywhere in my rural area. Kids being take into foster care by Child Protective services in droves. I get involved in family law cases to represent the clean parent taking custody of kids from the dirty parent all the time.
I have had parents of 30ish yr old kids say they would rather their kids die than to live in meth world.
While I have no face to face contact with the F use, I just read in a local rag that it is on the rise and be ready for it.
I absolutely agree the whole drug problem shit is class and income level related, or shall I say, caused.

my take is it is just an other cheap medication

for people that have mental health issues
(with obvious consequences) which costs less
than the price of living with a pain in the brain
sad state of affairs, risking total incapacitation
for a few brief moments of respite
Yeah. Living a miserable life with no hope
for anything. Anything at all. 24/7. Never ending misery. Pain.
Maybe if I were in that situation, I would flirt with a few hours of a happy mental and emotional escape to paradise before death.
I have not been in that situation where life offers nothing but more and more pain.
I do not blame those people, I blame TPTB for their life-destroying circumstance.
If I were fabulously wealthy, they would be better, much better.
