@janis b Hi Janis,

Yeah the domestic fowl for a state bird seems mighty questionable. Rhode Island Red is not the only one though. Delaware Blue Hen is the state bird of Delaware. I know these are small states but they each have 400 species of native wild birds in them. I have over 100 species on my RI list, and never saw one of their chickens there. If it is something you brought there, how is it the state bird? Surely there are countless species that better represent the state avifauna than a foul domestic fowl.

I imagine it is less often photographed because of its association with being toxic, even though it flaunts its beauty.

is straight out of old english but makes no sense. The Germans call it (or once did) fingerhut, whichis literally finger hat but is an idiom meaning thimble, which makes a lot more sense.

Sadly this uploader here isn’t up to snuff to show the crispness or sharpness of the photo. I’m too lazy to do flicker. This was taken just after it stopped raining.

Looks like we inherited your weather. Rain most of the day and for a few days more. Good timing though since it should help us until the water comes on. I have secondary water that comes from the dam.

Hi all,

PHantastic photos SP! Awesome orchids. Quite the group of flowers, aren't they? Amazing. And often with complex relationships with everything from various pollinators to fungus or microbes in the soil. Nice iris too!

Lazy Daisy, and since you asked... because it does not open flowers until later in morning.

This is likely Sow-Thistle or a near relative. A dandelion sorta daisyish thingie, which seems to barely open flowers before going to puffball. The flower heads on every one in the yard that is not behind a fence is eaten off by deer.

@janis b great idea Janis, I think there are some plants like that.

This grows in open often ruderal (disturbed) areas and soils, here anyway. They refuse to open despite the sun being on them the first few hours of morning. I guess they are just lazy? We get patches with from 200 to 500 or more flowers in a fairly small area. By time you get far enough away to get the whole patch, they are just white dots.

the deer don't particularly care for them
but they do enjoy the tiny yellow 'other ones'

@Socialprogressive In general the common Dandelion here in the U.S. that the people have spent countless millions at war with in their yards, is a non-native flower originating from Europe. It has medicinal purposes though, so not all bad. Here in Texas we have a native species that looks mostly the same, Texas Dandelion. It has some black dots in the flower the Euro model does not.

It's a great tune too.... Charlie's drums in the outro are great.
