Saturday Open Thread 3/30/24: Odds and Ends

I have been reflecting on news of the past week. Not just a lot to absorb, but a lot to absorb about how questionable news is today throughout the country.

The first example is the terror event in Moscow. 55 minutes after it happened, the US knew who pulled it off. The same bunch that can't quite nail anyone for the assassination of JFK to this day.

Within minutes after the announcement from our US authorities pinning down the perps, here comes other assessments that differ, even blame the CIA setting this up for Ukraine.

Next, the Key Bridge disaster. This is even a starker example of the distrust of media. Hell, we all saw the video of the actual wreck, but the who/what/where/how/why? info flooded the internet immediately. We don't even believe our eyes anymore.

Are the people who question and propose alternate assessments to events conspiracy theorists? Always? Are those conspiracy theorists nuts? Always?

Does the fear of being called a ct cause anybody to self-censor? Who benefits from or controls the societal shame of calling out cts? After all, does anyone want to step up to the nutty ct plate and hit a ct grand slam? Who wants to go first?

As for The Five Eyes,

Let's start thinking about our consumer version of inflation. You know, the US inflation rate is down, fantastic, be happy, no worries. Except, inflation has little to do with how we, the 99%, navigate life, stay alive.

So, Friday was a holiday. We went shopping at a Walmart and a local grocery store, making sure we had anything and everything we needed for the week, and especially Sunday, when everything is closed. Need salt? Fugettaboutit.

I checked prices on some basics, or essentials. I will check on them in weeks to come. See how they compare to you and yours. I think we should keep up a monitoring of cost of living to help us plan for what comes.

  • 1 gallon Reg. gas, cash $3.16
  • 1 gallon store brand milk (whole) $2.68
  • 1 gallon Hiland brand 2% (supposedly organic/local) $5.99
  • 1 doz. eggs $3.12
  • 1 lb. bag pinto beans $1.68
  • Folger's Columbian coffee 2 lb $12.88
  • Bunch of asparagus $1.98
  • (2) baby Romaine lettuce heads(1 pack) $3.98

I am sure you all buy staples that we do not keep on hand, and I would like to see your fluctuations in prices.

My shopping tee shirt, royal blue, purchased in England in 2016, had a royal crown emblazoned on it, and the words: KEEP CALM AND DRINK BEER. (It got smiles and compliments.)

I have said the State Bar of Texas has gotten me to the point of being embarrassed to be among them. My monthly TBJ (Texas Bar Journal) magazine came yesterday. On a scale of 1-10, how eager would you be to read an article with this title? "Building Blocks for New Adults", Texas Young Lawyer's Association's signature project, 'Adulting', closes the legal education gap on growing up.

Puke.

It wasn't always this way.

What's going on in your world(s), folks? This is the place to say whatever is on your mind this Saturday.

Let 'er rip!

It was a busy news cycle this week. Not only did the US know who the terrorist were, but they also knew Ukraine didn't do it. Sure sounded guilty to me. Another bit of hypocrisy was the US security council resolution which the US declared "non-binding" when by law it is binding. We make the rules and order you to obey!...Our version of rules based order.

Our local grocery sells smoked boston butts, and I asked my buddy if he had tried one. He said, "Sure, you know last year they were $12 each, now they're $17." We can eat on one at least four times, so it's not too bad a deal for not having to cook. Now that its warming up I'll soon crank up our smoker.

Y'all have a great weekend and nice holiday! Thanks for the OT.

@Lookout When I turned on my PC, a Google news page appears, until I can get to whatever site I want to go. Headline from The Independent was that a really large crane had arrived at the Key bridge. Now, exactly how or why is that newsworthy, much less the front page headline? Wouldn't a crane be used to clear the wreckage? And a large one, at that? And how is this making the readers better informed? Isn't it a blatant example of distraction from war news?
I watched a video with Finkelstein from the ebs last night. The mandatory aspect of cease and desist, sanctions, etc...was inserted into Chapter 7 of the treaty, and the actual agreed cease fire mandates issue from Chapter 6. The legal hair splitting is that the US claims Chapter 6 is stand alone and thus non-binding, and the rest of the world says Chapter 7 affords full power over all other chapters.
In 10 days, Ramadan is concluded, and the War Games will go at full throttle anyway. The real accomplishment is the awareness of the globe to just how evil the US government and Israeli government truly are. It may save some lives in the future.
Enjoy the butt! Tomorrow, I will cook the most expensive beef rump roast I have ever eaten. I wonder if it will also be the best evah?
Must go clip some wisteria out of the yard fence, will anxiously await your WW tomorrow, my friend!

According to government sources ...
Inflation is going down. Ha! They have invented
new categories to alter the numbers.
Now there is shrinkflation, stagflation, and
dollar devaluation to boot. 20% inflation is
accorded a 3% COLA increase for retirees.
But Bidenomics is working! DJIA is at an all
time high and war has never been so profitable.
Homelessness is up, poverty is increasing, health
care is no longer affordable and wages are stagnant.
Debt is up, foreclosures are up, defaults are up,
bankruptcies are up. And interest rates are up.
If this is success, I would hate to
see an honest reckoning of failure.

Thanks for the OT!

@QMS in every product sold in the store. If you pull out a 10 yr old recipe book, it might call for an 8 oz. can of some vegetable. Well, our canned vegetables are 6.75 oz. Our former 16 oz. containers are now 14.75 oz. A can of Campbell's soup is so small, it would not be a meal for a 5 yr old kid. I remember a bowl of soup would last me throughout a busy afternoon even as a teen.
Our inflation score card has as much relationship to we working stiffs as it does to those pesky aliens coming to visit. We all know who is making bank, and it ain't us. The calculations are pure fraud. Of course, inflation numbers make Democrats feel good about themselves.
I am approached about foreclosures and evictions a lot nowadays. I HATE DISPOSSESSING A POOR FAMILY, and generally turn down the work.

During Obama’s tenure shitlibs didn’t care about migrant children in cages. During Trump’s they were outraged that he kept them in cages that Obama built. Now during Biden’s there’s nary a word about children in cages. But will this get them back from brunch?

Judge Questions Border Patrol Position That It's Not Required To Care For Children At Migrant Camps

A federal judge on Friday sharply questioned the Biden administration’s position that it bears no responsibility for housing and feeding migrant children while they wait in makeshift camps along the U.S-Mexico border.

Place your bets on this and I’ll let you know if I see anything.

@snoopydawg Another legal hair splitting case, fer shure.
The definition of "detention" is when you are not free to leave. A common example is if you are pulled over for a moving violation on a public road, once a cop tells you to "stand there", your right to remain silent and request a lawyer be present for further interrogation is triggered.
These migrants can go backwards and sideways, but not forward. Is that detention or not? Especially when their goal is to go forward?
I am guessing it will be a ruling that favors the migrants.
Keep us posted! oh, my bet is 2 cents.

@on the cusp -- is that Trump does not appear to have any eggs in the "let Russia slaughter 400,000 Ukrainian troops conducting 'counter-offensives' under US/ NATO supervision and then claim victory" basket. Nor does RFK Jr. have any eggs in said basket, so what we can expect is that, regardless of who wins, the US will still be on the global down-trend, and the protests over US policy will continue. Our consolation prize will be that the Ukraine grift will mostly be over, although its consequences will still paralyze the West for some time to come.

Maybe a few people decided, back in 1990, that what we needed was the Green Party, a party outside of the Two-Party System. Two years later, I joined them. Everyone else was committed to the futile strategy of "taking over the Democratic Party" even though the whole superdelegates set-up was created in the wake of George McGovern's defeat in -- wait for it -- 1972.

The current situation is our bad karma, come to bite us.

One recalls, however, that it was in April of 2022 that Boris Johnson was sent to pressure Zelensky to give up on peace with Russia.

@Cassiodorus Insofar as Ukraine, Trump and RFK Jr. have clean hands. That is a nuke power that would not be hostile to them. Hand shakes, back slaps all around.
Moving on to Israel, they wholeheartedly back the genocide, which flanges up Iran, a nuclear power, which is also backed by Russia and China, 2 more nuclear powers.
I do not consider this an improvement in the nuke clock ticking away crisis, and as wokkamile (I think it was him) said to a comment I made recently about RFK, Jr., a single issue voter is limiting themselves to other positive changes.
When healthcare for all has the magic cure for radiation exposure, I will open up my mind a whole lot more.
I voted Green twice, did so at the November elections. I doubt I would be impressed with their party platform, but it was a chance to give the finger, vote-wise, to the two party system, which I abhor.
We must do whatever we can, whatever we think can help us, as regards elections, Cass.

So it's all about the GNUs, aka wildebeasts and they are, in fact, wild beasts. They perform an annual migration during which they become a food source for many other wild things, But, you knew that.

There are real journalists in my past they knew of the degradation and decline of what passes for same today and bemoaned and decried it. People who wish to make a living writing fiction should either write novels or openly go into advertising/public relations they said.

So called "Classical" economists define inflation as being driven by increases in the price of labor, hence, for most of the last 50 years there has been very little to no inflation in the classical sense, merely increases in the cost of living driven by other factors. Increases in the actual cost of living are minimized in the computation of the official US "cost of living index" through a variety of scams, false assumptions and omissions/exclusions. We all know this because we see it in operation and see the effects, but very few are privy to many of the details. It has to be that way or it wouldn't work. This is CT; also a fact, the two are not remotely exclusive.

ISIS is sort of like Manchin, but plural. A hireling created to wage war on that which tptb hold in disfavor and which tptb can then point to as the culprit and fall guy but which we never try to punish for what we call evildoing in public and victory in private. The public has become so inured to this charade that they do not even question how it is remotely possible for non-muslims to be ISIS members and operatives.

There is information out there to the effect that immediately upon completion of the FSK bridge the local Coast Guard unit started betting on how long it would be before a ship collision would bring it down. It is there, instead of a tunnel, some say, because it is illegal to transport hazmat through a tunnel and we, as a people, really badly need an efficient and cheap way to move that shit around. It is said that the engineering was state of the art back when it was built, but is way substandard today. Dunno 'bout that. Yon east coasters need a few moar faults and quakes to learn 'em how to build better stuff. Loma Prieta only seriously damaged one of our 5 bridges, a mere 20%, That bridge was only closed for about a month, though full replacement took 24 years. According to Quora, or whatever it is:

The replacement span opened on September 2, 2013, almost 24 years after the earthquake. Of that, construction itself took eleven years, from 2002 to 2013. The rest of the 24 years was taken up by planning, design, engineering, and politics.

For comparison, the Golden Gate, which wasn't seriously damaged by Loma Prieta, was built in a bit over 4 years.

Trump v Biden is still in the news. All kinds of So-called liberal and/or intellectual types are running around asking the wrong question and pontificating. "What's wrong with us?" they cry, pointing out all the reasons why DJT is too terrible to contemplate. IT AIN'T "What's wrong with US", it is "WTF is so wrong with Biden and the entire Democratic Party that DJT could be competitive, and why hasn't that been fixed?" (HINT: it isn't a problem for any of the owners)

GNU is an operating system which is 100% free software. Technically, GNU is generally like Unix. But unlike Unix, GNU gives its users freedom.

The GNU system contains all of the official GNU software packages (which are listed below), and also includes non-GNU free software, notably TeX and the X Window System. Also, the GNU system is not a single static set of programs; users and distributors may select different packages according to their needs and desires. It is embarrassing and insulting, can start a fight quickly, if a person hurls it at someone trying to discern truth from fiction. Just having an idea, expressing it, can get a person covered in mud and slime.
Inflation trackers are such bullshit. It bears no relationship to reality. My goodness, everything necessary is out of reach of one's pay check. Credit scores are a matter of life and death. That is fucking nuts.
Now, last I heard, we are a country with structural engineers and highly skilled labor, so what, or who, is holding up the building project? How can modern existing design not be utilized? Engineers do not share info? Trade secrets for their employers? Why do the engineers have to start from scratch as though they were re-inventing the wheel?

• 1 lb asparagus $3.99

Get a pork shoulder that will barely fit in your crock pot. Dump one jar of 505 Hatch Chile medium cooking sauce, and one jar 505 Hatch Chile diced peppers (heat to taste) over it. Turn on high, and ignore for 8 hours. Done. By the time you get back to it, it’ll be falling off the bone. Serve over rice.

Tomorrow comes a pot roast, and after I sear it in butter, with a coating of flour to brown it and give it a crust, I add some Sangria wine, scrape the sauce pan, dump it into an Instapot, then go run and play for a while to work up an appetite.

Wish I could find milk that cheap. It runs between $3.35 and $4.50 around here. I head over the state line to Alabama to buy gas. It's usually $.25 to $.50 cheaper.

Caught part of the news last night. At that Biden fundraiser, Obama was lecturing black folk about how good they have it under Biden. Inflation is going down, everyone has a good job, and you all have money in your pockets. Where is this fantasy world he is talking about.

If you want to know how broke people are, I went to the food bank the other day. They gave me a $28.00 leg of lamb. I've also gotten a couple of $20.00 steaks in the last few months. Everybody is living on chicken and hamburger. First time being poor has been an advantage.

On a personal note, I haven't posted in a while. Caught something after Christmas, which eventually turned into a strep infection. Could not get rid of it. And all that over the counter, DayQuil, NightQuil, and the other time of dayQuils caused my blood pressure to go insane. Finally got that under control. Starting to feel like I'm alive but I still tire easily.

My advice to everybody is to stock up. I don't think that there is going to be much warning when everything collapses.

You cannot imagine the number of working people in in this community where I live who depend on the food bank to raise their diet level above and beyond Ramen noodles. The line of vehicles can stretch for 2 miles, bumper to bumper.
I know many of those people. They have a home. Vehicle. Kids. A job. And no money for food.

@QMS we had no compunction about Ukraine being ready for a Blackrock land grab with 40% fewer people to protest against it. As always, follow the money.
How did the US manage to underestimate not only Putin, but every Russian, down to the last man?
I mean, they could have spent a week in Russia, learned A WHOLE LOT about that country and its' population. I think it is a 10 hour flight from JFK Airport to Moscow. Like, it isn't that hard...

@enhydra lutris I have time to listen to that! Thanks!
(I did have to take a couple of Anacin after my 2 hours of weed yanking and whacking. I am a wimp. Those heavy steel clippers are very close to being beyond my pay grade.)

@enhydra lutris @enhydra lutris I think nothing manufactured for heath care is good. Much of being made from petrochemicals.
Aspirin is made from Willow bark. Good. But, if you take it in handfuls like I had to for 15 years, an aspirin will tear up your stomach. Then Tylenol. But, wait! Kills people! Not good! Anacin is aspirin (willow bark) coated. I am about 12% Native American, harken back to the days when they doctored themselves. My back no longer hurts, an hour after taking the Anacin.

...for quite a while. White willow bark is still sold in packets in some herbal shops. I remember running across a flavor of pop called "White Willow Tea" once. But there aren't enough white white willow trees in the world to kill humanity's chronic pain. So I asked an AI that I use:

Modern aspirin is synthesized rather than extracted directly from willow bark. The active ingredient in aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid, is derived from salicylic acid, which is found in willow bark. However, the synthesis of aspirin involves modifying salicylic acid through a chemical reaction known as acetylation. This process was first developed in the late 19th century by Felix Hoffmann, a chemist working for Bayer, and it led to the commercial production of aspirin. While the origins of aspirin can be traced back to the medicinal use of willow bark, the aspirin available today is primarily synthesized in laboratories.

Cheers. Great topics; good discussions.

@Pluto's Republic from an herbal supplements store that has closed down. I thank you for the correction on aspirin products. Seems I am taking around 8 to 10 Anacin tablets per year. I only take them for some injury, as I am not in any kind of chronic pain. If I had to take something more often, it would be willow bark.

@enhydra lutris to be in pain.
I received Fentanyl in the er after my snake bite. My digestive system went nuts for 2 days. I lost about 8 lbs. within a couple of weeks.
I can take Tylenol, I just do not.
I have known a few people that gave up on conventional meds and sought out drs. who practice Chinese medicine. We have such drs. in the Houston area.
It did help those folks.

My bad, though. I somehow remembered their journal was published in Texas, rather than Florida.

this genocide is. With so much of Gaza destroyed including all the infrastructure you know there is no coming back from wiping them all out. It’s been happening for 75 years, but now Israel is going to complete the job. And western leaders are all on board with it. Biden needs to be arrested as does everyone else helping Israel.

Hedges.

A genocide foretold

Just response remember that tomorrow is Easter Sunday….the people who celebrate it are worshipping a Muslim while turning their backs to 2 million Muslims.

Lots of misspelled words lately so remember I’m having problems with small print.
