The concept of hegemony that he developed and commented extensively on is, when all's said and done, a polite modern-day word for empire.
The only difference between the American version as compared to previous ones (British, French, Belgian, etc.) is that the latter variety consisted of physical colonies. It involved classic imperialism where the colonists exploited their colonies economically, manipulated them politically, and intervened militarily when necessary.
The American Empire is essentially the same, but one without colonies - a distinction without a difference.
who says the name Gramsci in a diary. He is probably more relevant than some other revolutionary thinkers because he wrote from a position of a radical movement in defeat, in a country where religion and church were very powerful. So, more like our reality. He had a lot of time to think about it in prison.
I think of hegemony as the cultural and political legitimacy of the established ruling group. They don't just rule by violence and a monopoly on force. They rule through broad acceptance of a set of ideas, like the belief that the market mechanism will always produce the best outcome.
Antonio Gramsci was a member of the Arbëreshë or Italo-Albanian people. His first encounters with what he would eventually call "cultural hegemony" were doubtless due to his own language and religion being so unusual for Italy in the early 20th Century CE (the Arbëreshë were "Uniate" or Eastern Rite Catholics, and had their own language).
The Fascists under Mussolini incarcerated Gramsci to death; the impacts of imprisonment on his health were so severe that they eventually killed him. Let's not forget that!
