CityRocks and Privateers

I think the stress of the last few weeks has finally caught up with me. My thoughts and mind are completely blank it seems, and I can't get around that right now. So, let's do some fun music and this open thread is OPEN! Smile

In Hungary there is/was this 'thing' called CityRocks (youtube channel). It's basically a flash mob, 500 musicians or so, that get together and play songs. They started in 2017. And... they rock Smile .

Here they are playing some Queen - 'We Will Rock You!' And all I got to say is DRUMS!

And some Metallica! It's funny, I not a Metallica fan, but I love this song and this version of it! 'Enter Sandman':

And because New Wave/Punk is also music (well, to me): CityRocks doing Depeche Mode - 'Personal Jesus':

Finally, to change the musical genre completely, here's a Swedish 'folk rock' band, Ye Banished Privateers (Wikipedia page).

'You and Me and the Devil Make Three'. This is an acoustic version, so the sound isn't as great as the album version (which is here) but... I love live music and I like seeing them sing and play, the cannon balls made me laugh, the... well it's obvious Bonny isn't always a woman, right? BOOM.

And the same band singing 'Libertalia' live:

Ok, that was fun and now my mind, at least the musical part (which is all of it, probably!), is working a bit more :). Obviously, this is the open thread! Post what you are thinking about, reading, learning, doing, whatever. And thanks for reading and listening!

Hope everyone is doing well. It is rainy, very rainy, but 'warm' here. Maybe we are out of drought? Smile

The garlic brushed off the extreme (for here) lows a few weeks ago. So did the leeks. The celery and the lettuce did NOT. They are done. So I guess, go garlic, go leeks!

I just read that Biden is putting a 'pause' on the approvals for LNG terminals, etc. That's great, I guess. I want them to make the terminals illegal and stop them, not 'pause' them. I'm betting this is for the election, right? And after the election the 'pause' will be forgotten. Or am I too cynical? Notice the abortion stuff is ticking up again too? Maybe I really am too cynical.

Smile Have a great day and let us know what's up!

Awesome, just awesome. I've seen videos of, heard music from, the White Stripes before. Didn't realized they were led by Jack White! Old lady memory, I think Smile

@Sima , I don't really have a solution to Stress. Hang in there is usually the best that I can do. But, finding every little bit of scrap of joy that you can, might help. That's where music comes in I guess, and nature, and animals, and good people, and nature. In some music there is a defiant aspect to it which is like a big F/U to the people and situations that want to grind you down and make you miserable. The blues does that, so does gospel music. Actually whatever style of music that brings you joy can do that. It can take a pissy aspect of life and turn it on its head and say, "heh...listen to that".

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the Jack White stuff! I didn't even post the best clips, but they are easy to find. I'm sure you've heard some of his work in the past...old lady brain like mine temporarily forgot. Smile

from an article https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/5050/for-south-africa-defending-palesti...

When lawyers and government officials who had represented South Africa in its dispute against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) returned to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport on Sunday 14 January, they received a welcome usually reserved for world champions or Olympians.

People waving Palestinian and South African flags filled the airport’s international arrivals hall. The call and response of Amandla! Awethu! (Power! To the People!) rang out.

because of this...

“You cannot build a Holy Land on the mass graves of children”, It was a reference to the Israeli Defence Force’s (IDF) killing of, according to papers filed by South Africa, 7,729 children (out of approximately 21,110 Palestinians killed and over 7,780 missing and presumed dead) in the period between Hamas’s ghastly 7 October 2023 attack on Israel and its civilians, and 11 January 2024, the day when South Africa argued that the ICJ should declare Israel’s ongoing military response in Gaza a genocide.

referenced by Yves Smith in her piece https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2024/01/for-south-africa-defending-pales... about South Africa and their case in the International Court of Justice.

I hope the trial ends up doing the right thing, and finds Israel guilty, which it is!

@Sima , grasping at the best news stories that I can find. There's not much out there but what is, should get recognition.

Music lowers one's stress level, doesn't it? It was great to see kids getting into their playing! Great crowd music!
I never got to Denmark, but if I ever do, I will get to a concert hall, hopefully.
My fave flash mob video:

Thanks for the OT, Sima!

I love that flash mob too. It's so cool to see people getting into the groove, and I love how the musicians just appear out of the crowd Smile

Never been to Denmark either. Closest I got was Amsterdam, a LONG time ago!! So, maybe we both put it on our bucket lists, if we get to traveling overseas again.

@Sima with Denmark.
I loved the little old lady's smile. Wish I had been on that train.
Maybe we will get "over there" again one day, Sima.

I'm going to start with that, of course, only in the privacy of the farm at a goat being a pain in the butt, or something... yea, sure Smile

a small journey which started with
A Renault ad last year...

Then led to a wonderful choir...

And then the original...Metallica

And a langiappe of a great cover...

Hope all your critters are well and that your stress is diminishing.

We have a healthy bouncy Tekel, Teddy and our heat is working when we give it the attention it needs.

Happy New Year, Sima.

@QMS In grade school, was in the church Gregorian choir; in high school the girls choir after the move to a real high school a really good choir; in college sang off and on; then nothing til we moved to France.

Then mon mari et moi joined a 55 voice community/church choir lead by a truly skilled and lovely chef de cœur. He took us from single line church stuff to eight voice complex pieces from Bach to Bernstein, and music he wrote for us. We got two hours of practice each Friday in French as the rule is if only nine of us speak English including our leader, then we all speak French. He speaks very well and has given up his English citizenship. Brexit cost him 6000/year. He became a capellemeister for our diocese.

So late in life I have sung better than any time in my life. What a joy. And I could hear my tenor/baritone singing behind me. He has a wonderful solo voice for singer/songwriter stuff he self accompanies.

Great way to learn more French.

Hope you are warm and cooking good things.

This is late, but I wanted to thank you for the great video journey. And your tales of your choir adventure are kinda inspiring, believe it or not. I have been told that taking up an instrument (again) is a good thing to do in my older years. Maybe singing is too! I might dust off my old rickenbacher electric guitar to see!
