Friday Night Photos New Year Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, meme's, or music you like.

Happy New Year to all. It's been a so-so start to the new year. On the plus side I've woken up every morning so far, which is a good thing. On the negative side, I'm waking up to the same old shit. Oh well. I'll count my blessings that I'm still waking up. I made my first blood donation of the year on Wednesday. We also had the first rain of the year on Wednesday.

On Tuesday I made my first visit of the year to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Animal wise it was a slow day. Not much activity. At least the Tiger cubs were out. They were active and they'er cute to boot.

@QMS
The Rinos definitely look prehistoric. You should check out the African Shoebill. It looks prehistoric, too. The tiger cubs are 7 month old brother and sister. When seen next to their mother they look to be about a third of their full size. Their paws still look huge compared to their overall size. Love the music. I haven't heard it since it was getting air play in the mid 80s.

My mom’s boss had a Cessna 132 airplane and he and my uncle used to take me flying twice a month. The best part was taking off. Thrilling…. Then I went up in a hot air balloon and I was amazed at how silent and peaceful it was during takeoff. Just up and away. We flew over Park City for an hour and then over the mountains and back again. If you get the chance to do it I hope you will. If cost $35 back then, but now it’s close to $200 for 20 minutes. But still….

Love the tigers picture! I haven’t been to a zoo since I was a kid.

I flew in a small single engine plane once a long time ago. It was fun as well as noisy. I've never been up in a hot air balloon. I should do that.
Whenever you have a hankering to go to a zoo you have the Hogle Zoo in SLC.

I went to hogle zoo a lot when I was young, but I couldn’t stand seeing animals in cages or captivity. My favorite were the giraffes and elephants. The monkey house freaked me out as well as the snake house…and the smell! I’ve heard that the zoo has undergone lots of good changes since then and I’m sure things are better. Maybe I’ll go again before I die….

I went to the SF about 20 years ago and boy was I disappointed with it. Just really shabby. Hopefully it’s been cleaned up by now. But same thinking..hated seeing the animals in captivity.

both the Safari Park and the Zoo is they do their best to provide as roomy and realistic a living space for their animals as possible.

how pleasing it was to be at a zoo that gave the animals such a better environment. I was at the SD zoo once, I think it was 1977. It was a revelation after the Bronx zoo ; ).

I could almost feel the silence and weightlessness of being in a hot air balloon from your description. Lucky you.

No sound being hundreds of feet off the ground except for the occasional sound from the hit air machine to keep us afloat. Ogden valley has a bunch of balloons come in and fly once a year that I I wanted to go up in again but the price was too high. Lower it and more people will pay it or keep it too high and no one can afford to. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Anyway every time I see one I’m transported back to the day I got to go up in one. Really rememberable experience . I think I was 25 or so.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Outstanding photos as always! Love the Tiger Cubs. Here kitty kitty... Great gorilla pic too.

Love those Rhinos. White. It and Black Rhino have the two worst mammalian names on the planet. They are not generally distinguishable by color. Square-mouthed (White) and Pointy-mouthed (Black) would be far better.

Do you know what the bird was? I have no idea, not even sure of what family. One of demdare foreign jobs. A quick look at Field Guide to Birds of East Africa shows nothing like it. Maybe I'll check my Southeast Asia and Oz guides.

Here is some of my low-res stuff... a few butterflies.

Bordered Patch - the shadow across right outer wing really screws this one.
bordpatch110123a.jpg

Monarch - a tardy one late Nov. when most (of our E. migratory type) are long in Mexico.
monarch112423.jpg

Streaky Skipper. Looks like it is exploding. Highly terrestrial, you can be watching one fly along low over dirt road, and when it stops and lands it disappears before your eyes.

Hope it is well all over yonder folks!

Nice set of butterflies. Most of last year I was seeing one or more Monarchs every few days until sometime around October. I haven't seen any since then.
The bird is a White-headed Buffalo-weaver. I'm not sure how a bird weaves a buffalo but it must be pretty good at it in order to get it's name.

@Socialprogressive Thanks for the bird ID. Buffalo-Weavers are just named for being BIG weavers. There are multiple subspecies of that one (as many weavers). I thought that was closest in the book, but, the one they illustrated was a different subspecies where every wing feather has a broad white edge, not the solid black wing of your bird. So yours probably not the E.Africa type, but South or West, or??? Thanks!

Western Monarchs winter along the immediate coast mostly, often in Eucalyptus groves where nectar all winter. Those are also good for winter birding. If you know any big Blue Gum Euc patches near you, check them.

take care !

Late, but hopefully not last. I really enjoyed the music and the beautiful slideshow to go with it. Were you photographing during the time of kodachrome and homemade slideshows set to music?

I would like to know how rhinoceros get to be so strong and muscular on a plant-based diet ; ).

Thanks Social, and happy new year

I want to share something here from the other place (TOP). I don’t have the stomach to endure their political musings, but I still occasionally read my two favourite creative writers and music posters there. Enjoy it for what it is.

Happy and Interesting (fer sure) 2024!! As always, i wander over here for my photo and commentariat fix. Hubster gifted me with a new desktop computer and wireless mouse. Smile I'm enjoying myself playing (cautiously) with it. Read that TOP link you posted, jb. I'm not a big c & w fan, but I like a lot of Willie's tunes. My fave is a country blues one he did called Blue Eyes Cryin' In the Rain. I do like a lot of hybrid country classics when the blues is mixed in. I have always thought Patsy Cline was every bit as good a singer as Judy Garland, etc. Her voice is pure, and people are born with that gift. It can not be faked in a studio. Anywho, Rec'd!!

@snoopydawg tunes and anecdotes. I inherited a CD from my mother called Patsy Cline Sings Songs of Love. Every tune on that sucker is ABFAB, but my favorite is Sweet Dreams. She died waay too young in that plane crash. Man, imagine seeing Ms. Cline and Mr. Willie in a small music hall? Now, we're talkin'! Smile
