Twas the Night Before Christmas...
A true story from Christmas eve 1914
Christmas in the Trenches - written and performed by John McCutcheon
Lyrics below the fold
Christmas in the Trenches
My name is Francis Tolliver, I come from Liverpool.
Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.
To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here
I fought for King and country I love dear.
'Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung,
The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung
Our families back in England were toasting us that day
Their brave and glorious lads so far away.
I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground
When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound
Says I, "Now listen up, me boys!" each soldier strained to hear
As one young German voice sang out so clear.
"He's singing bloody well, you know!" my partner says to me
Soon, one by one, each German voice joined in harmony
The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more
As Christmas brought us respite from the war
As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" struck up some lads from Kent
The next they sang was "Stille Nacht." "Tis 'Silent Night'," says I
And in two tongues one song filled up that sky
"There's someone coming toward us!" the front line sentry cried
All sights were fixed on one long figure trudging from their side
His truce flag, like a Christmas star, shown on that plain so bright
As he, bravely, strode unarmed into the night
Soon one by one on either side walked into No Man's Land
With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand
We shared some secret brandy and we wished each other well
And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell
We traded chocolates, cigarettes, and photographs from home
These sons and fathers far away from families of their own
Young Sanders played his squeezebox and they had a violin
This curious and unlikely band of men
Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more
With sad farewells we each prepared to settle back to war
But the question haunted every heart that lived that wonderous night
"Whose family have I fixed within my sights?"
'Twas Christmas in the trenches where the frost, so bitter hung
The frozen fields of France were warmed as songs of peace were sung
For the walls they'd kept between us to exact the work of war
Had been crumbled and were gone forevermore
My name is Francis Tolliver, in Liverpool I dwell
Each Christmas come since World War I, I've learned its lessons well
That the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame
And on each end of the rifle we're the same

Where is the peace today? How would Mary and Joseph fair in Bethlehem...Birth at a check point?
One year earlier in Michigan is another true Christmas story that doesn't end so well...
"1913 Massacre"
Woody Guthrie
Take a trip with me in 1913
To Calumet, Michigan, in the copper country
I will take you to a place called Italian Hall
Where the miners are having their big Christmas ball
I will take you in a door and up a high stairs
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere
I will let you shake hands with the people you see
And watch the kids dance around the big Christmas tree
You ask about work and you ask about pay
They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day
Working the copper claims, risking their lives
So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives
There's talking and laughing and songs in the air
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere
Before you know it you're friends with us all
And you're dancing around and around in the hall
Well a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet
To hear all this fun you would not realize
That the copper boss' thug men are milling outside
The copper boss' thugs stuck their heads in the door
One of them yelled and he screamed, "there's a fire!"
A lady she hollered, "there's no such a thing
Keep on with your party, there's no such thing."
A few people rushed and it was only a few
"It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you,"
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out
And then others followed, a hundred or more
But most everybody remained on the floor
The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke
While the children were smothered on the stairs by the door
Such a terrible sight I never did see
We carried our children back up to their tree
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree
And the children that died there were seventy-three
The piano played a slow funeral tune
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned
"See what your greed for money has done."
A hundred years ago the labor movement created great social and political change. We need that kind of movement again.
Despite all the conflict in the world there have been bright spots.
One is the rise of alternative media. We have a way to see beyond the propaganda TPTB want us to believe...that war is good and provides jobs, America is the shining city on the hill, and all the other nonsense...
One of my favorite finds of the year has been "Dialogue Works". Nima interviews many of the same people as Judge Nap, but in longer form and less structured format.
Here's his interviews for this week. Background of each person at the links.
Chas Freeman - NATO Unity Has Cracked (44 min)
Matthew Hoh - Destroying and Making Unhabitable (40 min)
Col. Karen Kwiatkowski - Putin's Clear Mind (66 min)
Jeffrey Sachs - Dismissing Russian Concerns Outright (20 min)
and a second interview - Extremely Ignorant and Dangerous Policies (32 min)
Dmitry Orlov - NATO can't Survive as an Organization (34 min)
Nicolai N. Petro - Hopeless Military Situation (1 hour)
Andrei Martyanov - Destruction on a Huge Scale (61 min)
Ray McGovern - The US Massive Support for Israel - Historical Account (53 min)
Dan Kovalik - Tragedy of Palestine | Russia-US Bargaining Table (33 min)
Larry C. Johnson - Embracing Colossal Failures (52 min)
I became familiar with The Duran through Joe's EB. They are another favorite of mine. I especially enjoy Alex. His humor was a strong component of this walk and talk...
The routine at the beginning of Haley connecting the dots is hilarious. Entire video 40 min.
The Duran also interviews many people. This week the interviewed:
Seyed Mohammad Marandi - Iran in a Changing World (80 min)
Alastair Crooke - Palestine to Ukraine. Conflicts without Solution (102 min)
Patrick Lancaster - Frontline update; Avdeyevka and Marinka (45 min)
John Mearsheimer - Gaza & Ukraine Endgame (100 min)
Alex and Alexander also offer commentary and analysis on a variety of topics on their channel.
SoE often provides link to Judge Nap's interviews in the Saturday OT.
The last few weeks he has featured Max Blumenthal. This week they discussed:
Are Biden and Netanyahu on a Collision Course? (32 min)
Ray and Larry - INTEL Roundtable: 2023: A Year of Intelligence Failures. (30 min)
Gary Barnett: How Dangerous is the Government? (24 min)
Alastair Crooke: The US an outcast at the UN (31 min)
Scott Horton: 2023: Lessons for Biden, Zelenskyy, and Netanyahu (28 min)
Professor John Mearsheimer: 2023: Lessons for Biden, Zelenskyy, and Netanyahu (35 min)
Mike Benz: How Dangerous is the CIA? (25 min)
Phil Giraldi: Antisemitism and the Israeli Government (25 min)
Plus many others at his channel. These are just his interviews over the last two days.
I don't often feature George Galloway, but he too is one of my favorites. His show runs Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening. Today's Christmas special is at 1 pm central time. His monologues are great. Wednesday's is below...(19 min)
He also has good guests. He featured Gonzalo Lira's Dad, Garland Nixon, the Russian UN ambassador and others last week. I normally tune in late to skip through the breaks and some of the calls.
SoE often features Pepe Escobar in the Saturday OT. Pepe is often on Danny Hiaphong's show. (30 min)
He's recently returned from a trip to Moscow and central Asia's ...stans.
Full 2 hour interview here.
Pepe sometimes appears with Michael Hudson at the Geopolitical Economy Report.
Jimmy Dore often provides comic relief to the tense situation in the world. Jordan Peterson has been required to attend "woke" school because of his wrong speech on X, formally called Twitter. The skit below is what develops after his schooling...
Tyler Fischer’s HILARIOUS “Woke Jordan Peterson” impression! (15 min)
Laughter is a good approach to our situation...
During the holiday season, crass commercialism focuses on the purchase and exchanges of gifts. Ironically the most valuable gifts can't be bought...
Florida singer songwriter, J U Lee (1951-2002)
Friends and family are another special aspect of the holiday. I hope your life and this holiday are filled with both.

A year of Sundays
A few weeks ago like Annalena we've gone the full 360. Today we reach weekly watch 365, a year of Sunday columns. I hope you've enjoyed them over the years. I've learned a great deal putting them together.
Enjoy the day and season, and feel free to add anything in the comments that you would like.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good Morning
Wow, a whole year of Weekly Watching Sundays!!!
That is like 7 1/2 years steady at it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing all of this.
Hope your day is cheery and bright.
It is currently sunny...
...and 50 degrees F. Clouds are building and tonight and tomorrow it rains. We still need it, but I dread driving to B'ham in it.
At least we're out of the red in just in the orange this week.
Looking forward to seeing my family. My sister who currently teaches in Morocco will be there along with the rest including 3 and 1 YO great grandkids. Christmas is more fun with little kids. Ironic that it is filled with myth and outright lies, but I ain't gonna pop any bubbles.
My significant other's family is ill this year. Aging is a trip, and we're all on it.
Enjoy your day and the whole holiday season. Thanks for coming by!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
enjoy your sleigh ride south
we are staying local, tomorrow sharing a meal with neighbors
raking leaves today. Down to just 3 more piles!
holiday cheers
This thing is giving me an earworm:
There are multiple versions, and the selection and order of verses varies. I'm mostly thinking of verses 1, 2, 6 and 7 - which is all very well if you're sure yours is the "right" side....

There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Longfellow was a good one...
Thanks for sharing the timely poem. Yes, peace on earth, good will to (hu)man(ity)
I play Lotus Dickey's song of the Longfellow poem Psalm of life. Sorry it isn't on YT, but here's the poem...
A Psalm of Life
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
What The Heart Of The Young Man Said To The Psalmist.
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,— act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
Thanks for triggering the memory, and hope you have a great holiday!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning, LO, et al!
Thanks for bringing such informative links and beautiful music!
This holiday has been a stay at home and relax time. No stress, other than making sure I do not need some ingredient for the potato salad tomorrow. I am hoping my pantry check and grocery list is complete.
Meanwhile, we have rain and some thunder storms coming today. Not sure we need it, but we are getting it anyway!
So far today, a cop sent me a telephone conversation he had with a judge that is highly indicative of election interference and judicial misconduct. How to file a complaint, and with whom? My other call was to get instruction on how to involve the cops in a suspicious house fire, complete with missing gun collection, and missing home occupant. (The cops didn't even contact the fire Marshall. WTF?)
I am not going to check my phone until Tuesday morning! I want some time off, dammit!
I would love to meet your sister and talk about her life in Morocco. That is one of the few countries I have visited that I have no interest in re-visiting. My encounters with the street vendors was not only obnoxious, but dangerous.
Drive carefully, enjoy the young kids, and let's all try to make their future bright!
Take good care, my friend.

She seeking a new job...
After teaching in Tiawan , she moved to Morocco, during the holiday she will apply for another teaching job in another locale. Kinda a nice way to see the world.
Me, I'm a home body. Give me the holler.
Wishing you two a wonderful holiday. Let the answering machine filter your calls and deal with them after your time off!

I know a teacher who
Two other teacher pals taught in Hawaii. They felt hostility from the locals. Another teacher taught in China. She taught summer school several summers. Aside from eating strange food, which was required if you accepted an invitation to dine in the home of locals, she loved it, said it was the most extraordinary time of her life.
I loved every minute I spent in China, made friends with everyone I came into contact.
Well, I reluctantly took a call from my secretary, and her land lord said he would give me a house if I would move it. It was built originally in the 30s, has been refurbished numerous times. Might be a great rent house! Wow!
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
She has taught all over the world...
Think she's shooting for going back to Vienna. It is all 2 year contracts...and they make lots more than we did teaching here in Alabama. The idea of spending a couple of years and traveling on isn't for me, but I see how it appeals to others.
Hey, the house sounds like it is worth considering if you don't have to move it too far. Good luck with that project. There's a house down the road that was moved from downtown Menlo. They used the abandoned train track to move it most of the way. It was the parsonage of one of the churches. I think they sold it cheap to have a parking lot. Life is curious.
Merry merry and all that!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
I have done some work for and work with
Anyway, we found the keys in a shed, but they didn't fit. We will do a walk through soon. The owner can get someone to bring us the correct keys.
My favorite place on the globe is Vienna. If I had the $, I would ex-pat and move tomorrow. Not sure calling a home my true "home" for 2 years is a lifestyle I would enjoy, but to each his own, and your sister has had an extraordinary life. I just might be a tidge jealous, in fact.
Don't know about you, but merry merry involves cold beer at my house!
Tell your sig other that all best holiday wishes include her! I hope she is just doing great.

We once went to Vienna...
...to visit said sister. We loved it...talk about center of the empire.
You know our approach...hide in the holler. The homebodies roots run deep.
House moving 3.5 miles is very doable... sounds like a great new asset.

Nine Nations of North America?
Thanks for all the good links today. I have been rethinking Joel Garreau's "Nine Nations of North America", a book I read over 40 years ago. On the surface it may appear as an interesting travel log, but today it could be viewed as a template for the future of the USA. A goal among some Neocons is to partition Russia/China into several countries to control "the beast". If we continue our current foreign policy, we may become the several nations of North America. The action this week of the Colorado Supreme Court to remove Trump from the ballot is very troubling. There are more red flags, as well. For the US, the concept of one nation has been rocky from the start.
Good point - we started out as 13 allied countries
under the "Articles of Confederation" - however, this arrangement was found to be "inconvenient", and a convention was called to "revise" and "strengthen" them.
But the convention decided a total replacement was necessary....
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
I like the idea of breaking up the states into regions
New England
mid coast east
south east
mid west
the plains
the mountain areas
southern west coast
mid west coast
northern west coast
that is nine
breaking down the juggernaut
into manageable chunks
avoid singular rule
In DC, pentagon, congress, executives and courts can make their own
own little fiefdom. Afterall, it is not a state to begin with.
If the Great Divide cometh,
Since we are falling apart as a union, I can't say breaking it up into workable regions is a bad idea or dreaded outcome.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
The US talent for projection is quite profound...
Our goal of weakening and breaking up Russia has come home to haunt us, much like the sanctions created growth in the Russian economy.
Someone this week was comparing our current situation with 1850 when the republican anti-slavery party appeared and precipitated the Civil War. Trumps removal from the ballot might be just such a catalyst....and/or his possible conviction for trivial crimes. I'm no Trumpeteer, but I'm against weaponizing the judicial system.
A union of more powerful states might be a outcome as well.
Thanks for the insights!

Hola and happy holidays everybody. I have spent the entire
morning gathering a huge number of defunct and/or obsolete electronics of all types plus empty printer carts and Li ion batteries to haul off to Staples to be recycled as soom as xmas is over. Very cathartic.
Everybody have a wonderful holiday season and, especially, a safe one. One should be happy and joyful, right?
be well and have a good one

It is just a minute or so...
It was George Galloway's comment last week about Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem today that raised the question in my mind.

Butternut squash
I used to make some elaborate recipe with cubed pork steak, white beans, butternut squash, assorted typical spices, the one stand out spice was coriander. I stopped making it because I haven't had the strength for years to chop or cut the squash. Now that Iron Man Dear One can do it, I hate to bother him with it, since he is not a fan of any variety of squash. I should look it up in the wedding vows, probably on page 49, that he is supposed to keep me in cubed butternut squash, and eat a bite of it when I hand it to him.

Here's hoping for another years worth!
meant to tell you last week we've had the ruby crowned kinglet hanging around our windows...both male and female. They moved on this week, but provided a treat when they were here.
Hope you're having a good holiday into the 2024 transition...looks like y'all are finally getting some rain. Happy holiday friend!

Hi LO! Who could not love Kingets? They are a quarter-ounce of pure energy! Golden-crowned usually stay higher up in trees and so are harder to see. Especially the pretty crowns. Ruby-crowned can raise and lower that crest like a rooster, and man it can be flaming red in the sun. Great little birds!
Yeah buddy, have a great holiday! We too are masters of the holiday hunker-down. take care!
