And with the advent of winter, an already catastrophic situation in which almost all of Gaza’s healthcare has collapsed is quickly worsening.

Women are giving birth in tents in unsterile conditions. Smoke from the wood fires is exacerbating respiratory ailments. Those in need of medicine have been forced to go sometimes to up to 10 pharmacies in an often fruitless search.

“It’s so cold, and the tent is so small. All I have is the clothes I wear, I still don’t know what the next step will be,” said Mahmud Abu Rayan, displaced from the northern town of Beit Lahia to Rafah.

“We didn’t see anything good here at all. We are living here in a tough cold. There are no bathrooms. We are sleeping on the sand,” added Soad Qarmoot, a Palestinian woman who was also forced to leave Beit Lahia.

“I am a cancer patient,” Qarmoot said as children circled a wood fire for warmth. “There is no mattress for me to sleep on. I am sleeping on the sand. It’s freezing.”

Displaced Palestinians who spoke in Rafah in recent days, tell a similar story: a perfect storm of colder weather, hugely overcrowded and insanitary conditions and a lack of food and proper shelter.

Communicable diseases are increasing alarmingly, according to surveillance data shared by the World Health Organization. There is bloody diarrhoea, respiratory infections, jaundice, hepatitis A and meningitis.

A shortage of antibiotics is driving deaths from post-operative infections among the wounded. The chronically ill, unable to access care and medication are dying often unrecorded as victims of the war.

The mother of Ramzy S, aged 54 years, who had been evacuated from northern Gaza to Rafah, was one of those cases.

“My mother died last week,” Ramzy told the Guardian. “She had high blood pressure and diabetes. We’re living in bad conditions in a Rafah UNRWA shelter. We’re in tents, lacking the most basic things we need, and everything is hard to get.

“Older people can’t tolerate these conditions. In cases like this, hospitals are unable to deal with what we call normal diseases, they are full with hundreds of injured people and still receive daily. Even injured people are in the yards of hospitals as all bed are full.

“We never expected to bury our relatives out of our area or town.”

“The conditions are extremely dire,” said Léo Cans of Médecins Sans Frontières. “People are overcrowded, then there is a lack of quality water and what water is available is bad. Because people are conserving what water they have, they are washing less.

“It is a perfect recipe for communicable diseases. And what healthcare is available has been most focused on life-saving care in the hospitals.”

Amid the focus on the injuries from the conflict, a mounting concern is disease outbreaks.

despite having more reason to be than most Americans? It’s the governments that are monsters, and care least about the common people. I don’t know how Hamas operates, but would they go so far as purposely endangering the lives of their citizens? I don’t really trust any governments to take a humane approach to war. Is this what a grossly unfair advantage generates, life of little value.

we had a great time. longwood gardens puts on quite a spectacle for xmas throughout it's spacious grounds and conservatories. the family had a great time and we wore our legs out walking around.

Two shipping companies have announced they will pause all journeys through the Red Sea after a series of attacks on shipping by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

Danish shipping company Maersk said on Friday it was suspending its vessels’ passage through the key Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the German container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd said it would pause journeys in the Red Sea until Monday.

The announcements come after attacks from Houthi-controlled Yemen hit two Liberian-flagged ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait earlier on Friday, a US defence official told the news agency Reuters.

A projectile, believed to be a drone, struck one of the vessels, causing a fire but no injuries, the official said.

The ship was identified as the Liberia-flagged Al-Jasrah, a 370-metre (1,200-foot) container ship built in 2016.

Private intelligence firm Ambrey said the vessel, owned by German transport company Hapag-Lloyd, “sustained physical damage from an aerial attack” north of the Yemeni coastal city of al-Makha (Mocha).

“The projectile reportedly hit the port side of the vessel and one container fell overboard due to the impact. The projectile caused a fire on deck” that was reported over radio, Ambrey said.

Two ballistic missiles were fired in the second attack, one of which struck a vessel, causing a fire, which the crew was working to extinguish, the US official said.

No doubt the US will condemn the attacks but crickets with regards to the GENOCIDE.

The reintroduction of gray wolves in Colorado could move forward as soon as this weekend, after a federal judge on Friday rejected a motion from ranching groups to block their release.

“The petitioners who have lived and worked on the land for many years are understandably concerned about possible impacts of this reintroduction,” Judge Regina Rodriguez stated.

She ruled, however, that these impacts are not sufficient “to grant the extraordinary relief” sought by the petitioning parties.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials had indicated that if they did receive the greenlight, they could begin capturing up to 10 wolves in Oregon on Sunday and start releasing them in Colorado on Monday.

Rodriguez’s Friday night ruling, which followed oral arguments on Thursday, arose after week of litigative clashes between Colorado ranching groups and wildlife officials regarding the voter-mandated reintroduction of a species that once roamed free in the Centennial State.

Machado filed a claim and an injunction hours before the deadline of a period granted by the government for the opposition to contest restrictions on running for office.

Leaving court on Friday afternoon, Machado told reporters that she hadn’t appealed her ban, since she hasn’t so far been notified of one.

“This process that we carry out primarily intends to achieve the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela,” Machado said later from her party’s headquarters in Caracas. “The next few days and hours are crucial for these purposes.”

Earlier on Friday, Washington’s Venezuela Affairs Unit had said it applauded Machado and others “courage and willingness” to appeal their ineligibilities, and that Venezuela’s government must now “demonstrate their commitment to competitive and inclusive elections.”

Last month, Maduro opened a path for barred opposition candidates to get their disqualification lifted by appealing their cases in court by Dec. 15. The concession was granted under pressure by the US, which threatened to reimpose economic sanctions a little over a month after some of them were lifted.
