Arrived here yesterday to 74° temperature and sunny skies. Spent the day barefoot on the beach.
Sunset pic is from San Elijo State Beach.
Haven't been keeping up with current events so I'll let y'all fill me in.

back when we still tent camped. Iirc at least once we had to cross 101/PCH to fetch additional provisions and such from some convenience store to fete some guests. You could do that then, don't know about today. Also once on a job in LA bombed on down there to meet my Sis for dinner at some restaurant just north of the park. There is boids down there, of course, what with a lagoon and all.

No current events you really want to know about.
Thanks for the pic and the OT

From the founding of political Zionism in the 1890s, Haredi Jewish leaders voiced objections to its secular orientation, and before the establishment of the State of Israel, the vast majority of Haredi Jews were opposed to Zionism.

Antisemitism, including violent attacks on Jews, is still a problem in Ukraine.

Hmm, is there anything in his notes to cover that?

Jewish. There's been a ton of statements made about the fact that his dad is, and this has devolved into a popular assumption that he is too. However, I've never seen any references to him attending synagogue or anything like that, and it is the mother which is determinative, not the father, in Jewish culture. Somehow nobody ever states that his mom was Jewish, or that his parents were, only good old irrelevant dad.

Hi all, Hey E1,

Sounds a great trip and time.

Hey ya know there's boids at San Elijo? Wink

Ah the lovely San Elijo Lagoon. Got a story for that... shock...

July 4, 1981. The future ms d was at work when I got the phone call. Curlew Sandpiper at Sat Elijo Lagoon NOW. This Eurasian shorebird was a species of my dreams. A smallish but not tiny sandpiper with a curved bill like a curlew, males of which are solid rufus or chestnut in breeding plumage. A spectacular sandpiper. It was the first record ever in socal, there were three norcal records at the time.

She got home after noon a bit. I was ready with all the bags packed, met her at the door, and suggested she might want to use the restroom, we would be in the car the next 90 minutes. Less than two hours after she got home, we were at the north side of the lagoon looking at a smallish group of shorebirds with a dozen of the top birders in CA. They (birds and birders) were roosting in the pickleweed (Salicornia) for high tide. There it was in them. A male still mostly in breeding plumage. I couldn't believe it, thought I was gonna die of elation. We watched it for an hour mostly sleeping but occasionally preening. After that afternoon the bird was never seen again. A four-hour wonder. Many searched the next day to no avail. I have some slides of that bird in a box.

The San Diego area birders still turn up some good birds there.

As an aside, in 1982 we were in the museum inside the base of the statue of Liberty which shows works of immigrants. I couldn't believe it when I saw an original full size John James Audubon painting, of a Curlew Sandpiper. One or two get found each year from mid-Atlantic (Delaware) to maybe Mass. It is less than annual on the west coast.

So, fond memories of San Elijo Lagoon here. I don't even have to look that date up.

Have a great trip E1!

be well all!

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

I booked a couple of nights on the Seawall of Galveston Beach for January. The water and sand is pretty nasty, so we mostly just enjoy the ocean view. I am not a fan of flesh eating bacteria.
Sounds like you are really enjoying the trip, and I hope you can get far enough away from the roads to escape endless engine noise.
News sucks. You have missed only sucky stuff. It will be here upon your return.
Go play in the sand and look up, you might see boids!
Thanks for the OT, pal.

You haven't missed anything. Sadly, it's others who are missing things.
