Album of the Week 12-2-23

Afternoon folks!

This week we've got a mess of good stuff. We've got a James Cotton album to lead off, followed by a compilation of old Falcons records - a really great r&b/doo-wop group that had some enormous talents pass through it over the years. Following that there's a movie soundtrack album with Mike Bloomfield, Nick Gravenites, Paul Butterfield and Maria Muldaur on it. I think that it's kind of an overlooked album given the talent on it. After that there's a mid-70's John Hammond album with a bunch of good stuff on it followed by Johnny Winter backed up by the Muddy Waters band including James Cotton and Muddy Waters who sings on the last cut. We've got a JJ Cale (kinda greatest hits) compilation and to finish up, for a little diversity there's a Joe Ely album, probably his best one.

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Here 'tis:

James Cotton - High Compression

The Falcons - I Found A Love

Nick Gravenites And Mike Bloomfield Featuring Paul Butterfield And Maria Muldaur – Steel Yard Blues

John Hammond – Can't Beat The Kid

Johnny Winter - Nothing But The Blues

JJ Cale - Special Edition

Joe Ely - Musta Notta Gotta Lotta

I swear I close my eyes and I see a little bit of heaven: a yuge barn-like place with LPS in neat rows and great tunes playing on a state-of-the-art (and how!) stereo. Smile
ABFAB picks as usual. I love JJ Cale. Have three of his classic LPs and wore out my first copy of Naturally. Naturally, I quickly replaced it. LOL. Rec'd!!

heh, your vision is appreciated, i certainly wish my collection looked like that. my house is somewhat smaller than the barn-like space you imagine and the collection is spread across 3 rooms. the stereo is good though. Smile

@QMS

the soundtrack to steel yard blues didn't get a lot of attention when it came out, even amongst fans of the various musicians involved. it's kind of a pity because there are some good tunes on the album.

have a good one!

Wrote a comment last night and must've forgot to save it. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that I've never heard the Falcons before, dunno, maybe a geographic phenomena. Steelyard Blues brings back good memories, loved the movie when it came out. The artists on that album are something else, Merl Saunders is on it too.

Sometimes it takes me weeks to work my way thru one of these columns, pretty sure that this is another one.

be well and have a good one

@enhydra lutris

the falcons were a midwestern and southern thing when they started out, they certainly were influential.

heh, it takes me a week to put up the music for these posts, so, maybe it makes sense that it takes a while to listen through them.

have a good one!
