Welcome to Saturday's Potluck - Oct 21, 2023

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
Pablo Picasso

Still pretty busy on the farm. Winterizing the irrigation system is the big project of the moment it takes about a week and about half way completed. Possible snow in the forecast for mid-week so going to keep at the project through the weekend. It is a 16+ acre system with multiple sections of underground mainlines with connections for above ground aluminum pipes and plastic lines.

A small acreage has been one of my retirement option since teenage years. (yes, I am a long range planner) Noticed the challenges kept the mind and body active of the older generation. Plus it looked like they simply got to play outside all day every day. Financing the dream has been the biggest challenge. Learning the economic skills of running a business also helped with managing personal finance over the longterm.

Found My Dream Farm a 2010 British documentary series this week. It was surprisingly honest about some of the challenges and opportunities of small acreages.
"Determined to transform their lives, six families realize their dreams of returning to the land with help from gardening and farming guru Monty Don."

________

It has been 10 years since the launch of the Belt and Road initiative. Celebrations and plans for the future at this week's get together in Beijing.

Pepe Escobar: Russia, China Map Out New Economic Order in Beijing Sputnik Globe Oct 20, 2023

Let’s start with the future. The 3rd Belt and Road Forum in Beijing worked as a sort of road map for Eurasia economic/infrastructure integration. It was preceded by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China releasing on October 10 a quite detailed white paper on the New Silk Roads – or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the actual overarching foreign policy concept of China for the foreseeable future.
...
The bulk of BRI projects concern extractive industries and transportation corridors. It’s not by accident that key extractive industries are concentrated in Russia and the Persian Gulf – and that is intimately linked to Beijing’s complex strategic drive to bypass Hegemon containment and instances of Hybrid War.
...
President Xi announced that participants of the business summit at the Forum clinched new infrastructure deals worth a whopping $97.2 billion.
That’s the new paradigm. Compare it with the old Forever Wars paradigm: the White House working on a $100 billion package to fund the Ukraine-Israel wars.
...
China-Russia signed the largest deal in their shared history for the supply of grain; 2.5 trillion rubles for 70 million tons of grain, leguminous and oilseed cargo delivered for 12 years.

That completely destroys serial US Think Tankland wet dream scenarios advocating a naval blockade as the key strategy for the containment of China, to starve it of food and raw materials.

On the energy front, Xi expected the extended Power of Siberia II, or Russia-Mongolia-China gas pipeline to make “substantial progress” as soon as possible.
'''
Putin’s characterization of the Northern Sea Route is particularly crucial:
“All these transportation corridors from north to south in the European part of Russia, in Siberia, and in the Far East open up the possibility of directly connecting and integrating the Northern Sea Route with major logistics hubs in the south of our continent, on the coast of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. As far as the Northern Sea Route is concerned, Russia is not just inviting its partners to actively use its transit potential. Let me say more: we invite interested states to participate directly in its development and are ready to provide reliable ice navigation, communication and supply. As early as next year, navigation for ice-class cargo ships along the entire length of the Northern Sea Route will become year-round. The creation of the above-mentioned international and regional logistics and trade routes objectively reflects the profound changes that are taking place in the global economy.”
...
The Forum was a graphic illustration that BRI, an open platform – a concept unintelligible in the West - goes way beyond trade, infrastructure development and connectivity corridors. It is also about cross-cultural interaction and those notorious, Xi-defined “people-to-people exchanges”, setting an example when it comes to civilization coexistence.

It is not just Muslims being persecuted and drove from their homes in Israel.

‘The most successful land-grab strategy since 1967’ as settlers push Bedouins off West Bank territory The Guardian Oct 21, 2023

This week the Bedouin community packed up most of their belongings and drove all the women, children and elderly people from the West Bank ridge they had called home for nearly four decades, perched above a spring and beside an archaeological site.

“They didn’t leave us air to breathe,” said Zawahri, 52, describing a months-long campaign of violence and intimidation that intensified in the last two weeks. First villagers were barred from grazing lands, and the spring, then violence reached their homes.

“They came into the village and destroyed houses and sheep pens, beat an 85-year-old man, scared our children. Slowly our lives became unlivable.”

A few men are trying to stay on amid the shells of homes, empty animal pens, smashed solar panels and broken windows, staking a fragile claim to their own village.
...
Over the last year alone, 110,000 dunams, or 110 sq km (42 sq miles), was effectively annexed by settlers on herding outposts, he said. All the built-up settlement areas constructed since 1967 cover only 80 sq km.

It was also the biggest displacement of Palestinian Bedouins since 1972, when at least 5,000 – and perhaps as many as 20,000 – people were moved from the northern Sinai to make way for settlements, Shaul added.

Settlers and their political allies have celebrated this relatively new approach.

“One action that we’ve expanded over the years is the shepherding farms,” Ze’ev “Zambish” Hever, the secretary general of the settler organisation Amana, told a 2021 conference.
...
About 450,000 Israelis have settled in what is now Area C of the West Bank – the area under full Israeli military and political control – since the occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1967, some motivated by religious or nationalist ic reasons, and others by the cheaper cost of living.
...
The denial of grazing access adds economic warfare to physical violence. Cutting off land for grazing and growing fodder forces herders to sell off some animals, and with smaller flocks, they make less money and are more vulnerable to sickness, injury or other loss.

“Palestinian herders should be self-reliant based on their established livelihoods. Instead they need humanitarian assistance because of settler violence and the failure of Israeli authorities to hold perpetrators accountable,” the UN OCHA report said.

The impact was so serious, it may amount to a war crime, the statement added. Along with demolitions, evictions and restrictions on movement and construction, the attacks on herders created “a coercive environment that contributes to displacement that may amount to forcible transfer, a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva convention”.

It is always something around the homestead. I would rather be busy as bored.

We dug the sweet potatoes this week. One bed was very productive, and the other less so. I think one got more water than the other. So now it's time for a load of horse manure to cover the beds followed by a straw mulch. We put 8 of our ten beds to sleep for the winter in that way, and keep the other two going during the winter for the cabbage, collards, lettuce, broccoli and such.

I thought the Belt and Road meeting was quite a contrast to Israel's carpet bombing of it's open air prison. The west continues its decay.

Well, y'all have a great weekend. Hope you're beginning to catch a bit of color. We're a bit muted currently but looking for more of a show in the next few weeks. Thanks for the OT!

Both maybe?

A couple of days ago, the US embassy in Japan/Rahmbo astro turfed some kind of pro-Israel demo. As it turned out, it appears Japan is trying to steer a more neutral course. At least, this is what I heard. I think I got this view from Tim. (maybe it's wrong?) Now it appears Rahm's conflicted, something about 45 percent of the US. What does that mean? Don't shift too many US taxpayer resources to Israel and Ukraine? There is no way the US can compete with the Chinese economic footprint in Asia. It's delusional. Oh what to do! While we wasted huge resources on military expenditures and war, China built its industry and infrastructure and BRI.

Tim has a post on a similar kind of demo in Seoul. Except this is in support of the Palestinians.

This appears to be an international crowd as well. Seoul is a very cosmopolitan city. A lot of foreigners work and study there.

I took some screenshots of the candlelight demo in Seoul today. It's very hard to judge the turnout. I'm guessing about 20k. I liked the signs that equated impeachment (of Yoon Seok-yeol) with peace.

(Images from OhMyTV youtube 10.21)

A recent Gallup Korea poll shows that Yoon's approval rating in Seoul is down to 25 percent. Except for the wealthiest districts like Gangnam and vicinity, Yoon favorability is in the basement. He doesn't have any affirmative policies, and South Korea is suffering economic stagnation, inflation, currency devaluation and so on. So other than attacking the media and persecuting his political opponents with his ghouls in the prosecution offices, he doesn't have a domestic policy. His foreign policy (the so called trilateral partnership which includes Japan) is unpopular. He's tried to carve an international image as some kind of great statesman, but he isn't fooling anyone at home. People like Rahm, Blinken, and Biden are fooled, that's about it. The B-52s and nuclear submarines coming to South Korea don't change that. Military exercises with Japan, and Yoon's other pro-Japanese policies on Fukishima reactor waste water dumping, and dumping on the Supreme Court decision on forced labor, rejecting patriotic memorials to Korean independence fighters, etc., are in the WTF category. He is compared to collaborators and traitors. Yoon counterattacks by far right ministry appointments, and labeling the opposition as "state enemies."

Based on the Yeongseo Gu election loss this month in Seoul, and the undeniable rejection of Yoon in Seoul, Gyeonggido and other suburbs, the major establishment media are turning on Yoon. They don't want the rest of the conservative world to go down with the ship, but they see it coming.

I have a post on this that I worked on and off for three days or so trying to get the traditional Asian perspective on these latest developments provided by discussion of a TV Chosun Anchor briefing in which Yoon is compared to a Chosun dynasty tyrant. Yoon posed as a "king" during his presidential campaign, now South Korea has a tyrant.

TV Chosun compares Yoon Seok-yeol to Cheonsangun, the worst king in the Chosun dynasty.

[TV Chosun] Unchanging Yeonsangun (Yoon Seok-yeol) and the 3 Ministers (not Yoon faction).

The suggestion here seems to be that the righteous three ministers with the moral and physical courage to give the king advice he doesn't want to hear are Cho-Joong-Dong, the three dominant conservative media giants in South Korea (Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, and Donga Ilbo) which had remained uncritical of President Yoon until just recently. Until now criticisms of Yoon as tyrannical and incompetent, were only heard through independent media and opposition politicians now under attack. Does this signal the end for the Yoon Seok-yeol administration? Yoon has also turned on party colleagues and allies that made his presidency possible and now is running the party into the ground. Do the conservative media think their advice will sway Yoon? Doesn't look like it. So do they wish to absolve themselves of their own complicity by saying that Yoon and his cadre of opportunists in the so called People's Power Party (PPP) brought the prospective failure in the upcoming April 2024 general election upon themselves?

(Source- TV Chosun Anchor Briefing 신동욱 10.16.23) Evil of the Times, Article 10, "The people are like the waters, and the King like the ship that floats easily upon them; the ship can also capsize." Journal from the reign of Cheonsangun (1502). Another quote was "the cicada has a loud voice because it does not hear."

(Source= TV Chosun Anchor Briefing 신동욱 10.16.23) This is an old adage from Chinese classical history, "Admonish the king at the risk of death."

*Although the calculation did not change, the spirit of the three monks who were not afraid of death is conveyed in the Annals.

During the Spring and Autumn Dynasty, Shi Chu, the godfather of the Wei Dynasty, directly told the monarch Yonggong, “Throw away the treacherous Mi Zihe and appoint the loyalist Geo Baekyu.” When Yeong-gong did not listen, he died and said, “Put my body under the window.” Only then did King Yeong appoint Geobaekok and cast out Mijaha. This is a terrible remonstrance, ‘ ( the corpse's remonstrance 尸諫) ,’ which achieved its will with my corpse.*

From Michael Tracey. Tracey has exposed the hypocrisy of those supporting Israel to allow them to murder civilians under the guise of "Israel has right of self defense", and then out of the other side of the mouths calling for humanitarian measures. It is like we support the humane slaughter of civilians. I am pretty sure that when it comes to voting for military aid to Israel, that Bernie will vote for it.

When I look back, and I supported Bernie, he really directed his supporters into black holes. I remember Matt Stoller complaining that Bernie as a senator had a lot more power than his supporters in making things happen, and yet only engaged in safe useless rhetoric.

In looking back, I don't remember or think that any of his widely popular policies saw the proverbial light of day. In fact the so-called Squad derailed some those policies.

after they ran out on their way to kill over 2,000 Palestinians. Gee that’s a low number compared to today’s death toll! I remember calling him out on it and I was told to stfu because of his domestic policy would help Americans. I’m sorry, but for my economic situation to be approved I had to close my eyes to genocide. I never shut up. Now Kennedy’s supporters are making the same choice. I’m not going to shut up now either.

Bernie has as much power as Joe Manchin who used his to block the dem's agenda while Bernie after finally getting to be chair of some economic committee sat on his ass and didn’t even bother using his power. To me Bernie will always be the sheepdawg to lure dem voters back into voting for them. Bernie’s legacy will be just like Obama’s.

friend's chickens while said friend is gone. Not prepping garden beds for winter, but for fall planting, which will take a few days and it is supposed to rain tomorrow, which will find me part way through the top bed. I have over one bed worth of garlic and shallots to plant asap, so there goes any "free time", except I don't have the energy to go that full on that long. Ah well, should get started, or maybe have lunch and then get started.

Years ago John Mayer had a hit with a song about just "waiting for the world to change", which, to me, explained the death of the movement, any, and every movement, including the anti-war and/or peace movement. Too many gave up trying. So, I guess ya gets what ya pays for, 'cause we're now pretty much waiting for the world to end ...

The US left, what little there was of it, has abdicated while Europe seems to have slid further right, meaning it's all up to BRICS, or Asia + the global south. Meanwhile, plant beans and greens, I guess.

neither did we since we helped create it and has been funding it. Remember that John Kerry said that Obama sat back and watched them grow hoping that they would overthrow Assad. He was also in favor of them running the government. I’ve always wondered how our troops felt when they were training the very terrorists that had killed lots of their buddies.

And Israel allowed the injured terrorists to go to Israel hospitals to get treated and patched up so they could return to killing Syrians and American troops.

"Be all you can be" was removed as an American slogan and given to our terrorists. Kinda like giving aid and comfort to one’s enemy. I think there is a law against that.

US orders Eisenhower Carrier Striker to return

Statement From Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on Steps to Increase Force Posture

Oct. 21, 2023

Following detailed discussions with President Biden on recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces across the Middle East Region, today I directed a series of additional steps to further strengthen the Department of Defense posture in the region. These steps will bolster regional deterrence efforts, increase force protection for U.S. forces in the region, and assist in the defense of Israel.

First, I redirected the movement of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group to the Central Command area of responsibility. This carrier strike group is in addition to the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which is currently operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It will further increase our force posture and strengthen our capabilities and ability to respond to a range of contingencies.

I have also activated the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery as well as additional Patriot battalions to locations throughout the region to increase force protection for U.S. forces.

Finally, I have placed an additional number of forces on prepare to deploy orders as part of prudent contingency planning, to increase their readiness and ability to quickly respond as required.

I will continue to assess our force posture requirements in the region and consider deploying additional capabilities as necessary.
