EL is traveling, and there must be an error with his OT scheduling. His Monday OT usually post at 6AM CT. I'm putting up a substitute in order to provide some place for beginning today's discussions. Hope EL is have a great time on his travels, and thought I would use this as a place to comment on the upcoming eclipses in the US over the next year...both solar and lunar.

Path of the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023 from the west coast, and total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 Across Mexico, the Midwest and into Canada.

eclipse_map_5400.png

On Oct. 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. Visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America, millions of people in the Western Hemisphere can experience this eclipse.
The Sun is never completely blocked by the Moon during an annular solar eclipse. Therefore, during an annular eclipse, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. You can also use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector.

2023 Annular Eclipse.png

On Oct. 14, 2023, the annular eclipse will begin in the United States, traveling from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast. Weather permitting, the annular eclipse will be visible in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as some parts of California, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona.

The annular eclipse will continue on to Central America, passing over Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Panama. In South America, the eclipse will travel through Colombia before ending off the coast of Natal, Brazil, in the Atlantic Ocean.

San Antonio is in the main path of of both eclipses...

A total solar eclipse Monday, April 8, 2024, will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

An Eclipse Never Comes Alone!
A solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.
Usually, there are two eclipses in a row, but other times, there are three during the same eclipse season.
March 24–25, 2024 Penumbral Lunar Eclipse
Other eclipses here.

Well, what's on your mind. I don't want to eclipse your thoughts...

@Lookout about great places to be to see the eclipse! I never miss the chance to go to San Antonio!

Much appreciated.

@on the cusp Looks like a lot of Central Texas is in the direct path of the eclipse. My small Hill Country town is already having planning meetings. Guess many would prefer the countryside to watch the event rather than in a large city like Austin.
Figure I will be hearing from some of my friends from out of state or the Houston/Galveston area to see about coming to visit me. I plan to be here and hope to have a great experience.

This ain't no dress rehearsal!

@jakkalbessie @jakkalbessie in Hye, near Fredericksburg, where we stay when on the hunt for good live music. Well, it is on a ranch. It would be the perfect place for us. My husband has already suggested we book it for the eclipse viewing. It is 5 miles from a highway.
I hope you and your friends will be awed and have fun together.
I try to avoid Austin. And even though I love, really LOVE San Antonio, to find a quiet place puts you in the boonies.
We will stick to the ranch house in Hye, the boonies we know and love.
Take care, chica!

was a bit curious as to the lack of OT this AM. Forgot he was traveling. Also, have not had much luck with the scheduler since the new format (even before that). Glad you are on your toes!

I ask, because the Germans banned my son for serving in the foreign US Armed Forces (Air Force)
He lost his German nationality and then somehow got the US citizenship. I don't remember the details anymore, but can say we both are happy about the fact that he is US citizen today. So, therefor, folks, behave, be nice, make love and no war.

Sigh. How are you all doing? Feels like long time no see.

@Lookout Hey LO! Awesome you get to hear Wood Thrush all the time. For breeding season anyway. What a great voice they have... has been likened to an old rusty gate. Lots of birders consider it the best bird song of all. If you do a pull off with left hand, and then use right hand and tap, you can get that high note an octave up on the guitar. Smile Just have to write something it fits in...

We seem to be busting the drought here. Have moved from D4 to D2 last couple weeks. We had 3" since Friday night, here. We had 8" in May, and 4" in April. Saving the day here, the river actually ran again, went over the spillway at the park pond for the first time in over a year, is at bankfull now.

On that map with the two eclipse tracks at top, I am right about dead center of the x where the tracks cross... nearish 100W x 30N.

Dawn chorus is the best free symphony there is, now playing daily near everyone. The only thrush family bird we have nesting in cent. TX is Eastern Bluebird. Nice voice, but no Wood Thrush. Our dawn is brought in by Indigo and Painted Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat is the noisiest, Northern Cardinal, Bewick's Wren, Yellow-throated and White-eyed Vireo, a small squadron of White-winged Dove saying 'who cooks for you?' like Barred Owl does, Yellow-billed Cuckoo which doesn't really sing, but makes neat noises, Lesser Goldfinch, and so on. Our Carolina Wren pair got predated a month or so ago. Dawn chorus is our alarm clock.

Enjoy that bird sound man!

@dystopian My Mongolia story: I wanted to go there. I started looking at tour companies who featured it. I figured 7 days of riding a horse, sleeping in a tent would satisfy my urge to act like a Mongol.
Well, my network of pals who explore far ends, discouraged me. Quite frankly, there is little or no "tourist" infrastructure. you get somewhere to just be there. Nothing to see, nowhere to go, nothing to do. (Do I need to go to Mongolia for quiet time to read a book?) Food is what you would be served. Run out of toothpaste? Oops. No guarantee of booze. BIG oops.
I cancelled, will wait to see how things shake out in the future.
I hate that I miss seeing the reindeer!
Where am I going nowadays? To the exotic Hill Country of Texas!
Good times!

@on the cusp I always thought Mongolia would be neat. Gobi Desert, those falconers that work from horses with Golden Eagles (!), throat singing, yurts, all seems pretty neat to me... Wink

Beware the hill country of TX... it will seduce you if you are not careful. It did me anyway. Smile

I actually remember when the area was affordable. Days long passed.
I can't imagine a 15 minute city spring up around there, can you?

And of course the Orange Place is having a hissy fit.
At lest for now, West does seem to be the most acceptable candidate for me, but it's early times yet.

@Johnny Q

Well, he'll easily get on the ballot here in Colorado. They let anybody on. Hell, they even let Kanye West's joke/vanity campaign on. So I'll actually get a chance to vote for him.

The People's Party is currently only on the ballot in 3 states (Forida, Virginia, and of all places Missouri). They are gonna have to start organzining, and *hard*, to get him on the ballot (or at least write-in status) in the others- and some of those are going to be a tough nut to crack.

If it weren't for all the planet-size egos involved, I'd say that he should angle to merge efforts with the Greens. They still have access in 17 states, and a line-sharing arrangement might be good for both organizations- Gawd only knows that they need a good candidate.... But that makes too much sense, so it will immediately be given de kibosh.

in spite of the big wet blanket the Biden people have thrown over the possibility of Dem primary debates.

RFK Jr. is planning to run as a Dem. He had a 2 hour Twit Space today with Elon Musk and 68+thousand others. I was one too, but I just listened. Lots of direct truth bomb answers and very little dissembling.

It seems Cornel is not the only one pinning their campaign on the power of truth. If we can keep the censors at bay on our favorite inter-tubes perhaps the absence of Bye-Done in the virtual public square will end up being a big plus.

One can only hope……

RIYADH (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday, state media reported, as the kingdom continues to expand its diplomatic outreach beyond traditional Western alliances.

Maduro was received at the airport of the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah by Deputy Governor of Mecca region Prince Badr bin Sultan and other officials, Saudi state news agency SPA said.

Venezuela's Maduro is the latest U.S. foe to visit Saudi Arabia as the kingdom rebuilds alliances without the blessing of the United States, its long-time ally. Riyadh has restored ties with Iran and Syria over the last months and strengthened its cooperation with China and Russia.

on Saturday for Denver Day of Rock- just had to see Austin Young Band and Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers again. Good shows!

The crowd was way down, in part because of the rainy weather and in part because of the date change. It always used to be Memorial Day weekend- dunno why they changed it... As a fundraiser (for Amp the Cause) you'd think they'd want to do it on a date when people actually want to come into town. Oh, well.
