US supreme court ruling makes it easier for companies to sue striking workers

The US supreme court on Thursday made it easier for employers to pursue lawsuits against striking workers, in a decision seen as a setback to labor unions. The opinion, written by Justice Amy Coney Barrett and backed by not just conservative colleagues but all except one on the nine-member bench, sided with a concrete business in Washington state that sued the union representing its truck drivers after a work stoppage.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, the bench’s most recently confirmed associate member, was the lone dissenter, noting “today the court falters”.

The decision in the case of Glacier Northwest Inc against a local affiliate of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters overturned a lower court’s ruling in the union’s favor. Glacier had accused the union of intentional property destruction during a 2017 strike when a group of drivers went on strike on a day when their mixing trucks were filled with concrete for delivery to customers. The company had been forced to discard the unused product at a financial loss. If the concrete is left in the trucks to harden, the vehicles can sustain serious damage.

The supreme court overruled the Washington state supreme court ruling that the loss was incidental to a strike that could be considered arguably protected under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).

The Biden administration urged the justices to reverse the lower court’s decision, Reuters reports. The decision allows Glacier’s lawsuit to proceed.

Debt Ceiling Deal Puts No Limits on Ukraine Aid

The debt ceiling agreement reached between the White House and House Republicans places no constraints on spending on the war in Ukraine, a White House official told Bloomberg.

The $113 billion that has been authorized to spend on the war in Ukraine so far was passed as supplemental emergency funds, which is exempt from the spending caps that are part of the debt ceiling deal.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, funding “designated as an emergency requirement or for overseas contingency operations would not be constrained, and certain other funding would not be subject to the caps.” The deal suspends the nation’s debt limit through January 1, 2025.

Hawks in Congress are looking to use emergency spending to increase the $886 billion military budget that was agreed to as part of the deal. The emergency funds could go beyond Ukraine and might be used to send weapons to Taiwan or for other spending that hawks favor as part of their strategy against China.

Czech General Warns NATO ‘Is Currently on a Course’ for War with Russia

The commander of the Czech Republic’s armed forces said the North Atlantic alliance and Russia are on the path to a direct war. The general described the potential war as the “worst-case scenario” but emphasized that it remains a distinct possibility.

General Karel Rehka, the chief of the Czech armed forces general staff, told his country’s parliament on Monday about the potentiality of a war between NATO and Russia. “No one wants it at all, but it is not impossible. It is necessary to stop saying that this is not possible, because it is simply possible. It can happen and it is necessary to prepare for it in the long run,” he said. ...

While high-ranking officials in NATO nations say they hope to avoid a direct conflict with Russia, those nations continue to cross redlines set by Moscow. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan recently asserted that Kiev could use arms it receives from Washington to attack the Crimean Peninsula. Secretary of State Antony Blinken previously acknowledged that targeting Crimea was a “red line” for the Kremlin.

Embassy slams remark by UK’s top diplomat as encouraging Kiev to attack Russia

The recent remark by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly who said Ukraine had the right to attack targets inside Russia may encourage Kiev to carry out more terrorist acts in Russia, the Russian embassy to the United Kingdom said in a comment on Wednesday.

"The hostile statements by Britain’s top `diplomat’ cannot be viewed as anything but an attempt to encourage the Kiev regime to carry out more attacks on civilian facilities and our civilians," the embassy said. "Apparently, from their windows, the Foreign Office - or Estonia - sees residential blocks in Moscow as `legitimate military targets’," the embassy lamented. "We assume that such statements should mean that Cleverly himself is ready to take responsibility for the damage and suffering caused to the Russians as well as for the extremely dangerous escalation of the conflict," it added.

Macron Will Push NATO For ‘Concrete’ Security Guarantee for Ukraine

NATO is unlikely to vote to admit Ukraine as a member when the alliance summit convenes in July, but it ought to offer the beleaguered country “concrete and tangible security guarantees,” French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday.

“I'm not sure we will have a consensus…for full-fledged membership. Let's be clear,” Macron, who just weeks ago declared France’s support for Ukraine’s path to membership, conceded at the GLOBSEC Security Forum here.

But he said that NATO should work instead to cement a more modest guarantee of support.

“I think we have to build something between the security provided to Israel and a full fledged membership,” he said. “I think we need to talk concrete and tangible security guarantees.”

Revisiting his 2019 comments that NATO was essentially “brain dead, Macron said the alliance had been revived by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, though some members are still not as awake to the threat as they need to be.

RFK Jr Calls For "Mature Conversation" On Ukraine As Admin Is "Lying To Us"

2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has once again blasted the United States government for lying to the public and to the world about Ukraine, while calling out the Military Industrial Complex in particular. It's not the first time. Earlier this month an avalanche of mainstream media headlines condemned his take when he told UnHerd the following: "We should have listened to Putin over many years. We made a commitment to Russia, to Gorbachev, that we would not move NATO one inch to the east. Then we went in, and we lied."

More recent speaking engagements wherein he utters unpopular truths on Ukraine have gone viral this week. In one of them, he tells an audience at a campaign event, "Our government is lying to us about it. The media is going on with the lie…It’s a laundering operation for the Military Industrial Complex." ...

Interestingly, he said that while many Americans are moved by compassion for the Ukrainian people, including his son who actually early on went to fight within Ukraine's foreign legion, Washington has been deceptive in selling Americans on the billions in defense aid poured into the conflict.

"We were told that the reason we were going over there is because it was a humanitarian mission," RFK Jr said. "But then every choice that we made along the way, that's been about prolonging the war and increasing the bloodshed, and refusing to negotiate. If it was a humanitarian mission we would want to terminate the war, to shorten it, and to reduce the amount of bloodshed," he continued.

He then talked about the "real reason" for escalation of the conflict seen in the rhetoric of Biden and some of his top officials as including regime change against Vladimir Putin, as well as weakening and exhausting Russia's military in order to prevent its effectiveness in future conflicts elsewhere in the world. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has long been on record as saying this is about 'weakening' Russia.

Below is an April speech that included similar statements by Robert F. Kennedy Jr...

Senate begins voting on debt ceiling bill to avert disastrous default

The Senate began voting Thursday evening on the debt ceiling bill that passed the House a day earlier, with the US creeping closer to the 5 June deadline to avert a potentially disastrous federal default.

Senators plan to hold a series of votes on amendments to the debt ceiling bill, all of which are expected to fail. Once that vote series is complete, the Senate will then move on to the final passage of the bill.

The Senate majority leader, the New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, vowed that the upper chamber would “stay in session until we send a bill avoiding default to President Biden’s desk”.

US averts first-ever default with 11th-hour debt deal

Debt Deal Gives Fossil Fuel Lobby A Legal Shield

The House of Representatives voted 314 - 117 last night to approve a debt deal that includes provisions expediting construction of a controversial fossil fuel pipeline — and attempting to block courts from hearing challenges to its legality.

The language nestled into the agreement reached by the Biden administration and congressional Republicans last weekend came amid a flood of campaign cash from executives at NextEra Energy, one of the companies spearheading the pipeline, to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ind.-Ariz.) and two other Democratic senators whose votes could be needed to pass the agreement.

The bill now advances to the Senate. Not only does it mandate approval of a major gas pipeline, it also omits proposals to expedite construction of transmission lines that energy grid experts say are necessary to transition the country off fossil fuels.

The pipeline measure is part of the nearly 100-page legislation to raise the debt ceiling and keep the country from defaulting on its payments. This package — which also includes cuts to the IRS budget, the resumption of student loan payments, and new work requirements for social safety net programs — is serving as a vehicle to push through the pipeline and energy permitting fast-tracking measures championed by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y).

Sinema was reportedly involved in negotiating the debt ceiling bill’s permitting language, which will expedite federal agency reviews of energy infrastructure projects, limiting the window for project opponents to bring legal challenges under keystone environmental laws.

Armed Police Raid on Bail Fund for Cop City Opponents Is Attack on “Infrastructure of the Movement”

'Behavior of a Fascist Police State': Legal Aid Organizers Arrested After Backing Cop City Protesters

Rights advocates warned Wednesday that the arrests of three board members of an Atlanta-based bail fund could mark the beginning of a new era in the United States' treatment of peaceful protesters—one in which both demonstrators and those who support them are targeted by law enforcement.

Under the direction of the Republican state attorney general, Christopher Carr, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Atlanta Police Department carried out the arrests of Marlon Scott Kautz, Savannah Patterson, and Adele Maclean of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund (ASF).

The group offers financial support to people who have been arrested for protesting, including the dozens of people who have been detained for resisting the development of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, also known by critics as Cop City—a $90 million police training facility that would take up 85 acres of publicly-owned forest.

The three board members were charged with money laundering and charity fraud, leading state Rep. Saira Draper (D-90) to question the state's use of SWAT teams and helicopters to conduct the raid in a residential neighborhood.

"Peaceful protest is as American as apple pie," said Draper. "Using heavy handed tactics to suppress peaceful protest is shameful."

Writer and historian William Horne denounced the arrests as "the behavior of a fascist police state."

Lauren Regan, executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, told The Intercept on Wednesday that the ASF is "the first bail fund to be attacked in this way." The funds have been used for at least a century to pool together communities' financial resources to help bail people, including civil rights protesters, out of jail.

"There is absolutely not a scintilla of fact or evidence that anything illegal has ever transpired with regard to Atlanta fundraising for bail support," Regan said.

She added in a press statement that "bailing out protestors who exercise their constitutionally protected rights is simply not a crime."

"In fact, it is a historically grounded tradition in the very same social and political movements that the city of Atlanta prides itself on," she said. "Someone had to bail out civil rights activists in the 60's—I think we can all agree that community support isn't a crime."

Plans for Cop City garnered national attention earlier this year after Georgia state troopers killed a forest defender named Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, shooting him nearly 60 times.

Since Tortuguita's killing, nearly 30 people have been charged with domestic terrorism for allegedly damaging property and trespassing while protesting Cop City.

More than 40 people in all are facing domestic terrorism charges, and three people charged with felonies have been placed in solitary confinement.

Civil rights attorney Alec Karakatsanis called the use of a "heavily militarized" police force to arrest three campaigners for alleged financial crimes "a bone-chilling development" that could have implications for the future of protesting in the United States.

Karakatsanis added that "everyone should be scared by" a statement made by Georgia's Republican governor, Brian Kemp, who said arrests were "a reminder that we will track down every member of a criminal organization, from violent foot soldiers to uncaring leaders."

"When three community organizers who help to run a bail fund are arrested with an entire SWAT team on clearly bogus financial charges, it signals that not only is it illegal to protest, it's also illegal to try and support people who have been criminalized for protesting," Hannah Riley, a writer and organizer, told HuffPost. "If bail funds aren't safe, what's next?"

FBI DIRECTOR Christopher Wray Agrees To Hand Over Memo Alleging Biden CORRUPTION To Comer

Click and read the whole thing:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Sheepdogging and Liberal Fantasy

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has announced his presidential campaign. Kennedy obviously has the advantage of name recognition, and he isn’t shy about making frequent references to “my uncle” and “my father.” Yet he is attractive to leftists in the party because he is willing to take positions in opposition to its established orthodoxy. He does make the obligatory references to Russia’s “brutal invasion” of Ukraine but he also points out what no one in the Democratic Party will say, that the war was provoked by U.S. actions and he calls the billions of dollars in allocations to the Ukrainian government a “money laundering operation for the military industrial complex.”

Yet Kennedy also falls back into line if pressured. He said that the CIA assassinated his uncle John F. Kennedy, and he points out the many CIA interventions around the world as a practice he would end as president, but he backtracks if criticized, making a lie out of his pronouncements. “The majority of people working at the CIA are good, patriotic people committed to their missions and the law. My own daughter-in-law was a field agent, and she is among the bravest people I have known.” He certainly got the zionist message about Israel. Kennedy praised musician Roger Waters for his opposition to the war in Ukraine but then deleted his comment on twitter because Waters also opposes Israeli apartheid. For good measure he added meaningless blather about the “aspirations of the Palestinian people.” After being called out when he ran for cover, he then deleted his comments which rescinded his first comment.

There is another issue aside from Kennedy’s willingness to back pedal when criticized for taking the positions he claims to run against. Will his supporters end up like those who worked for Jesse Jackson, Dennis Kucinich, or Bernie Sanders, who believed in their candidate only to be told that they had to support Mondale or Dukakis or Kerry or Clinton or Biden? One must ask, what is the point of going out on a limb yet again when history gives a strong indication of how this campaign will end?

The selective amnesia of many Kennedy supporters indicates another problem with what passes for left politics in this country. People here have been so thoroughly indoctrinated about the value of electoral politics that they believe it is the only way to bring about the changes they want to see. The end result is the search for a savior, the belief that we can vote our way out of a situation created by the oligarchy which controls both wings of the duopoly. It is comforting to think that the right president would end capitalist exploitation and imperialism but such a belief, while understandable, doesn’t hold water.

Like Tobacco and Big Oil, Secret Docs Show Chemical Companies Knew PFAS Dangers

An analysis of previously secret documents published Wednesday sheds new light on how chemical corporations aped Big Tobacco by conspiring to conceal the extreme toxicity of a class of synthetic compounds contaminating the Earth's air, water, soil, plants, and animals—including most of the world's people.

Commonly called "forever chemicals" because they do not biodegrade and accumulate in the human body, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—which include PFOS, PFOA, and GenX—have myriad uses, from nonstick cookware to waterproof clothing to firefighting foam. According to the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, PFAS is linked to cancers of the kidneys and testicles, low infant weight, suppressed immune function, and other adverse health effects. It is found in the blood of 99% of Americans and a similar percentage of people around the world.

But that wasn't known until recently. Scientists and public health officials were some of the first to understand the dangers of PFAS, and in recent years, exposés like Stephanie Soechtig and Jeremy Seifer's 2018 documentary feature The Devil We Know and a 2022 episode of HBO's "Last Week Tonight" in which host John Oliver called PFAS "the devil's piss" raised awareness of the "forever chemicals." In 2018, Congress held its first hearing on PFAS, and around that time it emerged that chemical giants DuPont and 3M understood—and covered up—the dangers of PFAS.

The Devil They Knew: Chemical Documents Analysis of Industry Influence on PFAS Science—a new paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Global Health—enriches understanding of the chemical industry's role in concealing the dangers of PFAS. It includes documents like a 1970 DuPont internal memo stating the PFOA C8—used to make the nonstick surface Teflon—is "highly toxic when inhaled and moderately toxic when injected."

"These documents reveal clear evidence that the chemical industry knew about the dangers of PFAS and failed to let the public, regulators, and even their own employees know the risks," Tracey J. Woodruff—who wrote the paper with Nadia Gaber and Lisa Bero—told Phys.org.

One 1979 DuPont report describes a range of highly toxic effects from testing PFAS on animals, including two beagles who died after being administered a single 450 mg dose of ammonium perfluorooctanoate, and rats that suffered enlarged livers and eye ulcers.

Another document, from 1980, shows DuPont and 3M learned that two out of eight pregnant employees who worked making C8 had babies with birth defects, but then lied the following year in a memo declaring that "we know of no evidence of birth defects" caused by C8.

"Further, the industry used several strategies that have been shown common to tobacco, pharmaceutical, and other industries to influence science and regulation—most notably, suppressing unfavorable research and distorting public discourse," the paper states.

Here’s proof fishing bans leave plenty to eat, says study of Mexico marine park

Banning fishing in a Mexican marine park did not reduce the fishing catch, according to a new study that says it has dispelled the “myth” spread by fishing companies that protecting marine areas leaves less fish available for people to eat.

The before-and-after study looked at whether banning commercial fishing from the Revillagigedo national park, which covers 147,000 sq km (57,000 sq miles) of Pacific Ocean west of Mexico, would reduce the country’s catch volumes.

The answer was no, said the study’s authors, who said the finding showed that “large, fully protected MPAs [marine protected areas] can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable use of the ocean, without major economic repercussions on the fishing industry”.

Before fishing in the MPA was banned in 2017, Mexico’s $1bn fishing sector had warned it could reduce their catch of tuna and other pelagic fish by 20%.

But catch data comparisons from the four years before and after the ban showed the MPA “had no causal effect on catches or area use, and therefore did not cause harm [to the Mexican fishing fleet]”, said Fabio Favoretto, a postdoctoral scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California, and the lead author of the peer-reviewed study, published in the journal Science Advances.

Foggy future for Arctic shipping as sea ice melts

Rapid warming in the Arctic has opened up faster shipping channels through the fabled Northwest Passage in recent decades, but a study reveals that the reduction in ice is likely to lead to increased levels of fog, potentially removing the benefits of these high-latitude short cuts. ...

Xianyao Chen from the Ocean University of China and colleagues plugged historical fog data into climate models to assess how much the fogginess along the Northwest Passage (through the Canadian archipelago) and the Northern Sea Route (along the Russian Arctic coast) is likely to increase.

Their findings, published in Geophysical Research Letters, show that fog is already slowing shipping along these routes, and by 2100 increased fogginess could add three days to the Northwest Passage route (under a moderate 3C warming scenario). Furthermore, the reduced visibility increases the risk of collision with icebergs.

The replies to this tweet are just as mean spirited as the congress members who voted against student debt relief.

But Liz is sure that Biden will veto the bill because he’s such a caring person who has always had the working class interests in mind….what’s that? Biden made it so that student loans couldn’t be discharged through bankruptcy in the first place? Color me shocked!

Furthermore, the CRA resolution seeks to reinstate the student debt of more than 260,000 public service workers whose loan balances have been wiped clean since September 2022. If that were to happen, a combined debt burden of nearly $20 billion, which amounts to more than $72,000 per person, would be put back on the shoulders of teachers, nurses, first responders, and others who recently finished making 10 years of qualifying payments under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program that was enacted on a bipartisan basis in 2007 and streamlined by the Biden administration in 2021.

On Thursday, the Massachusetts lawmaker called the bill's passage "shameful," and expressed confidence that Biden "will veto" it. Congress doesn't appear to have the two-thirds majority in each chamber needed to override a veto.

Weird how none of the democrats who were against this deal bothered to filibuster it like Manchin has done numerous times. Maybe Bernie too thinks that his good friend Biden will veto it?

Give me a break!

The Calm Man in the Capital: Biden Lets Others Spike the Ball but Notches a Win

The president’s approach to the negotiations...reflects a half-century of bargaining in Washington...From the start of the clash with Mr. McCarthy’s Republicans, Mr. Biden has followed the instincts he has developed through long, hard and sometimes painful experience.

The who-won debate now raging in Washington could shape the narrative for both parties as they navigate this new era of divided government. Republicans want to take credit for putting an expanding federal government on a diet while Democrats want to tell their supporters they protected key progressive priorities.

The agreement crafted by Mr. Biden and Mr. McCarthy in the end was a whittled-down version of the original proposals on the table. Mr. Biden won no Democratic initiatives as part of the bargain — no new taxes on the wealthy or prescription drug discounts, for instance — (also no cutting of oil subsidies and taxes -SD)

While he initially insisted that the debt ceiling was “not negotiable,” Mr. Biden eventually abandoned that point of principle to do exactly what he said he would not. He barely maintained the fiction that negotiating about spending cuts was not the same thing as negotiating over the debt ceiling, a distinction few if any saw. When that was pointed out to him at one point this week, he finally shrugged and said, “Well, can you think of an alternative?”

It would all work out in the end, he assured Americans. And as far as he is concerned, it did. No matter what anyone else may say.

Shitlibs are cheering wildly for Dark Brandon for his win over McCarthy. Yes it’s sad that more people will have work requirements, but not much money was cut from the IRS budget to go after tax cheats and spending for social programs will only be suspended for 2 years which when the next debt ceiling debate comes up there will be more cuts to the programs because you just know there will be. But what they aren’t mentioning is that student loans repayment will start again and people will have to pay back interest and some who have theirs cancelled will have to repay them anyway. With interest? Or that Manchin has finally gotten his way with the oil deal he’s been trying for since Biden became president. No biggie I guess unless you care about the climate…wait how many diaries a day are there on climate change? Ahh well.
Dark Brandon stuck it to McCarthy didn’t he? Well!?

The head of the top weapons contractor in the United States said Thursday that he's happy with the debt ceiling agreement negotiated by the congressional Republicans and the Biden White House, a deal that proposes a military budget increase while imposing two years of caps on other discretionary federal spending—impacting funding for education, housing, and more.

James Taiclet, the CEO of Lockheed Martin, said at a conference that the bill now awaiting President Joe Biden's signature is "as good an outcome as our industry or our company could ask for at this point," noting that it calls for "3% growth for two years in defense where other areas of the budget are being reduced."

"I think we're in a real strong position at this point," said Taiclet, adding that "there's sufficient funding in the president's budget."

Hell of a win Brandon! Btw, FJB. This major fck you to the poor is in addition to Biden throwing millions off Medicaid and food stamps whilst increasing the military budget. Hey shitlibs anything to say about that? Yeah some of them still read the news and blues cuz I’ve seen their comments on it.

In Mogelson’s writing we meet conscripts sent to the front after little or no training. He describes one man who was kidnapped on a city sidewalk and was under Russian fire three days later. Paralyzing fright, exhaustion, demoralization, desertions, a sort of Beetle Bailey incompetence — these are rampant among the green draftees that now make up the majority of the AFU’s infantry. They fight with Vietnam-era vehicles shipped from the U.S., or muzzle-loaded mortars long out of production, or Soviet-era weapons left over from the pre–1991 days—and, withal, too little ammunition for this kind of matériel to make any difference at all.

A 1945 Maxim gun of 1884 design? Jeez. Mogelson is right to question, if too briefly, where may be all the weapons the U.S. and NATO allies are shipping into Ukraine. A great number of them have already been destroyed, he reports, which comes as no surprise. Being as close to the scene as he put himself earlier this spring, he would have done well to tell us something about the greedheads who run the regime and the military as they sell shocking amounts of arms into the black market as soon as they arrive across the Polish border.

From a journalist who is embedded at the front and not hold up in a hotel room far from it and just writing what the Ukraine military tells them to write. Unfortunately this journalist and his photographer won’t get published where the Ukraine supporters will see it and learn what’s really happening in the war. I bet they would say something if it were their neighbors being plucked off the streets and sent to war without adequate training or modern weapons.

about free speech and how telling the truth is being criminalized.

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/pcr-criminalization-truth-western-world

The ruling establishment works hard to boost the reputations of those who repeat official narratives as truth, even giving them Pulitzer Prizes, and to destroy the reputations of those who speak the truth. The attacks on truth tellers are helping the ruling establishment criminalize truth. Truth tellers are being turned into criminals on an ex post facto basis. Exercising free speech is being associated with harming official explanations with truth, and is in the process of becoming a criminal act. Fox News, in settling gratuitously a civil law suit from Dominion voting machines, paid close to $1 billion to create the precedent that reporting news that is harmful to any party is libel even if the reported news is true and had no malicious intent.

Killing the messenger has always been the practice. Today despite whistleblower protection laws, whistleblowers always suffer. The government refuses to enforce the laws that protect whistleblowers for telling the truth. Julian Assange has been imprisoned for over a decade without due process of law for simply reporting leaked documents revealing US war crimes and intentional deception of US allies. Edward Snowden had to give up his US citizenship for Russian citizenship simply because he gave us proof that the NSA was, and is, illegally spying on us without cause or warrants. In the past few days we have witnessed the FBI escape accountability for high treason in an overthrow attempt against a sitting President of the United States by the whore media’s disappearing the FBI plot against President Trump into “procedural mistakes” regarding surveillance and the opening of investigations. High treason against President Trump is approved by the Democrats, the FBI, CIA, military/security complex, and the presstitutes, because the ruling establishment wants Trump gone. Trump doesn’t serve their agendas. Getting rid of Trump is more important to them than truth.

I’m stunned by how many people think it’s the government’s job to stifle what they think is disinformation or misinformation and have scoffed at the information that the Twitter files showing how the government demanded social media censor people who were saying truthful information. The truth about Russia gate came out with the Mueller report and again with Durham's and yet people still believe all the lies that have been debunked. I think it’s just as bad as the people who buy devices that spy on them and then when they find out they say it’s no big deal. How do you reach people like that?

Caitlin has a great essay on propaganda. She writes a lot about it and hopefully one day people will start questioning the lies they have been told. But it’s probably too late to save free speech since most of the world is passing laws against it.

the ruling establishment wants Trump gone. Trump doesn’t serve their agendas. Getting rid of Trump is more important to them than truth.

i think that there is a faction of the ruling establishment that wants trump out of office. there is another faction that really doesn't care because ultimately he gets the important stuff done that they want done (military spending especially).

i suspect that if the entire ruling establishment wanted trump gone he would no longer be well above room temperature and respiring.

EBs just coincidentally is both Evening Blues and Elvin Bishop. "Red Dog Speaks" is new to me, good stuff. Ditto that live "raisin Hell" album, so xtra thanks for that.

I decided all the same that the session needed a little Pigboy Crabshaw, but couldn't decide which, so I picked two. Sorry bout the ads, couldn't find clean copies

The United States is seeking to secure supplies of TNT in Japan for 155-mm artillery shells, as Washington rushes weapons and ammunition to Ukraine for a counteroffensive against Russian forces, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

For war-renouncing Japan, any procurement would test its willingness to court controversy to help Kyiv because export rules ban Japanese companies from selling lethal items overseas, such as the howitzer shells that Ukraine fires daily at Russian units occupying its southeastern regions.

Nonetheless, the allies appear to have found a workaround to enable the TNT sale amid global shortages of munitions.

"There is a way for the United States to buy explosives from Japan," one of the people with knowledge of discussions on the matter in Japan told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, citing the issue's sensitivity.

Export restrictions for dual-use products or equipment sold commercially are less stringent than for items with a purely military purpose, which is why the U.S. can buy Panasonic Toughbook laptops for its military.

Tokyo, which hosted U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin this week, has told the U.S. government it will allow the sale of industrial TNT because the explosive is not a military-use-only product, the other source said.

I guess the US didn't follow the Sun Tzu precept that one shouldn't engage in a war, if they aren't in a position to win it. ( 선승구전 先勝求戰 )

I'd say not being able to provide enough ammunition in a conventional ground war is not being in a position to win. I happened to hear the Art of War principle mentioned by a Korean political analyst today in a domestic political context. I wanted to get the script for the Chinese four character aphorism, and ended up reading a business article interpreting and applying the principle in a Donga article. If the conditions don't exist to win the war, you're supposed to create them first before going to war, or give up your war plans. I've read English versions of The Art of War twice over the years, but I misplaced my copies since the move home. I know they're in one of those 50 odd boxes.

So the US, and NATO can't produce enough artillery shells for the Ukrainian proxy war against Russia. The US Department of Defense is asking South Korea and Japan to help fill the void. In a "coincidence," in a new video, I heard my favorite South Korean retired general in the National Assembly grilling their deputy defense minister on what the standards were for maintaining a reserve artillery shell inventory, 30 days, 60 days or 90 days? The Defense Ministry official attempted to evade the question, claiming he did not have advance notice of the question, so he hadn't prepared. After a harangue by the assembly member, he said the standard was 60 days. Representative Kim said "the standard was 90 days, who changed it?" The deputy minister tried to blame it on the former administration. What's the supply now? More evasion. The same from the chief of supply and logistics in the Defense Ministry. Rep. Kim, "So you just gave several hundred thousand 155mm artillery shells to the US and Poland (for use in Ukraine) and now you can't tell how many days supply reserve of ammunition is currently on hand?" The Deputy Minister denied that hundreds of thousands of shells had been delivered to the US and Poland. (Why lie about it?). The actual level of stocks of 155mm ammunition was never specifically disclosed at the committee hearing, although the thrust of the dialogue leads one to believe, that the ninety day standard is gone, a new 60 day standard is in effect, and we don't know but probably can assume from the course of the evasive and vague answers, that the actual amount is probably something significantly less than that.

Representative Kim was going "ballistic" on the administration officials, so the Chair of the Defense Committee hearing, who is also a retired general, but in the conservative PPP party, interrupted and said to Rep. Kim, "how is it that only you know everything?" Further, words to this effect, "Some things are supposed to be secrets; if you keep talking about these things, then they are no longer secrets." In essence, he was chastising representative Kim Byung-chu, a former high ranking career military officer for not being patriotic. (Get with the program).

The current South Korean administration also devised a circuitous method to avoid compliance with its own laws prohibiting export of lethal weapons to belligerents in a war, by claiming the 500,000 or more shells exported are going to the US not Ukraine, disregarding that the shells are fungible, and who the end user really is.

I also heard a ridiculous discussion on VOA Washington Week on youtube, recorded last weekend, with two think tankers, with government experience, asserting that a G7 goal was that South Korea should cut its "dependence" on exports to China, so it would no longer be subject to Chinese "economic coercion." One of the "experts" on international affairs also tried to convey the impression that the US or the G-7 allies, it wasn't entirely clear to me, would or should establish a 200 billion dollar fund to compensate South Korea (and Australia) for the consequent export losses with China, that would inevitably occur while avoiding "Chinese coercion." Yes, sure that will happen, right? South Korea's trade deficit is the worst it has been since the IMF collapse in 1997. So let's make it worse?

One of the guests a former US statesmen with significant ties to Japan, tried to express regret for the lack of a US supportive response to a previous episode of Chinese economic coercion. That occurred when the US set up a THAAD missile system in South Korea in 2017, and the Chinese responded with an unofficial embargo of South Korean goods and markets, that cost South Korea 23 billion dollar in losses. This was only temporary, as President Moon Jae-in resolved the matter with promises to China, that the Yoon administration has breached in large part. The US did nothing to offset those South Korean losses, but did demand that South Korea increase its support of USFK forces by a factor of 5 (Trump's brainchild). Fortunately, that failed, but the South Korean SOFA contribution was increased substantially.

Events over the last year in South Korea have shown that the current authoritarian Yoon administration is incompetent in national security matters. Another case in point-

“Alert issued to the Seoul region at 6:32 am today. All citizens prepare to evacuate.”

Seoul, home to 10 million people, was thrown into chaos and terror Wednesday morning. It all started with an emergency disaster warning sent by the Seoul metropolitan government at 6:41 am that day.

The sirens rang out all across Seoul with a few minutes’ delay between them, and the sound of a broadcast that was difficult to make out boomed through official government speakers.

The public was confused, with no way of knowing why the alert had been sent or how or where they were supposed to evacuate to. People flocked online in an attempt to understand the situation, but the explosion in traffic left the sites unresponsive. It was truly a state of panic.

“If a real war broke out, I think we would all end up dead in all the panic”

The fact that the military already knew the North Korean satellite launch missile track, and that the missile would not come anywhere near Seoul, added to the image of an incompetent administration.

Saw some good reports on climate temperature increases and the likelihood of an active hurricane season here in Florida. Hurricane season began June 1st. A lot of speculation about how la nino will affect the season. Still don't know if my wind damage policy will renew or not.

As usual thanks for EBs Joe.

@soryang

thanks for the roundup. it sure sounds like the u.s. is doing its damndest to do the opposite of the art of war rule of creating the conditions for victory, by weakening itself and its allies both militarily and economically. when the empire collapses, there will be a mighty thud.

good luck with the hurricane season. my favorite weatherguy says the general trends look like an active season due to the el nino oscillation, but that due to the vagaries of the jet stream moving around it might be mitigated by vertical wind shear which can significantly diminish the severity of hurricanes.

i hope that everything works out with your insurance and the weather. have a great weekend!

@joe shikspack ...for the El Nino link. The explanation there was clearly stated.

This was the WP link I was looking at (didn't get the pay wall):

https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/05/01/el-nino-la-nina-weathe...

And the other I read- https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/other/near-record-warm-atlantic-is-a-w...

7 hurricanes; 3 major hurricanes, seems like the middling consensus in the various projections.

I'm sure there will be policies from the more overtly predatory insurers left in market. I checked the county official records, which show scores of lawsuits on unpaid claims. I think i saw 300 suits on one company alone over the years that I know is still in the market. DeSantis changed the insurance law to make it harder to sue them. Namely, pay your own costs, even if you win the suit. This mostly concerns wind damage claims. I think the feds pay the flood insurance policy claims.

Hi all, Hey Joe! Hope it's all good out there!

Great Elvin Bishop. He was awesome. I saw him a couple times about 74 and 75 or so. At least one of the times opening for ZZ Top. He was fantastic both times I saw him. He could really play the blues. That clip of him at 71 above is awesome. The real deal player.

Great to see the Scripps study published on the Rivella Gigedos preserve not hurting fisheries. Hard to believe we have to keep doing that though. The socal closures around the channel islands the industry screamed about being too much have proven to have repopulated all of southern california, and half of Baja, as well as into NorCal. White Sea Bass for instance were one of the main targets, overfished to zero, no take whatsoever. After the closure a couple years you could catch one. Then two, then three, maybe five now, or higher. And so it goes for everything that bred around the so cal channel islands. It only takes protecting one small key nursery habitat to restock an entire fishery. But we have to protect one.

I gotta fly, severe thunderstorm inbound, our fragile Texastan electric grid requires full unplugging...

Thanks for the news, and great soundscapes!

to be made in “feeding the world “. If you want to make *real* money, figure out how to feed 1% of the world at most, maybe. Then cause a crisis or two that destroy the existing food chain, and sell your services to the highest bidder among those remaining.

Easy peasy. They teach this in all the best business schools, of course. Sure, a lot of people will die, but just think of the shareholder value! Just a cost of doing business….

Note for the humor-impaired: This Is Snark. It is also not funny. And it is also true, unfortunately.
