Voo Doo Weather

open thread_61.jpg

I suppose just about everyone has heard about the heat wave here in the PNW. After months of really crappy weather it turned on a dime last Wednesday and has been in the mid 90s ever since, leaving me scrambling to get everything covered, housed, or watered real well.
Broke out the soaker hoses at the farm and hooked them up to the 275 gallon water tank and put them on a timer. It should keep all seven 50' raised beds dampened till we get back up there next weekend.
Volunteer potatoes are coming up in four rows and I can't figure out how I missed so many at harvest the last two years. But I'm leaving them and planting around them as best I can.
Planted some old bean seeds from 2017 just to see if they come up and lo and behold, both kind are through the hay and leaf cover. A 50' row of bush beans and a row of pole beans.
Had a couple of packets of 2019 peas and did the same thing. A few have started coming through and I suspect the rest too, will germinate.
This is my second year experimenting with the no till Ruth Stout method of heavy mulching (5-6+ inches) to keep the moisture in the ground which doesn't require as much watering.
A couple of shallow holes reveal heavy earthworm saturation. Each small shovel-full holds dozens of them, some 8" long. The no tilling is working it's magic.
Cooked the last of our Anasazi Beans last week dating back to 2019 from our trip to Mesa Verde, Colorado.
I kept out a handful and planted them last week. Hopefully they will come up as this is the kind of heat they thrive in.
Just experimenting away out here. And having fun doing it.
The weather is so unpredictable anymore that trying to plan a garden is a crapshoot. I've got a huge variety of veggie starts in the seed room, all old seeds, that need to get into the ground asap and it's crunch time.
I bought 2023 seed packets but haven't opened any yet. They were supposed to be backup in case the old seeds didn't sprout. I guess I will save them for next year.
The only old seeds that failed to sprout were the cilantro seeds I harvested way back in 2014. I had been planting them for years now successfully, but I guess after nine years they've become past their best by date.
Oh well, I've got backup seeds.
I know some of you have full grown gardens already. Lucky you.
So, how much has your weather changed from the norm of, say a decade ago?
The thread is open. Watcha got?

Zelensky is obviously taking orders
that was proven to be guilt by association
and awareness of crimes by Nürnberg
so that is no excuse of consequence
probably for the bucks of a few 'others'

because we never seem to have usual weather. I arrived here in '64 from San Diego in the middle of one of the worst el niños in ages with a ton of nor-cal flooding and have yet to discern any regular pattern that lasts for more than a couple of years. Wink

I've got winter crops I probably need to harvest, they grow below ground so Ive got to dig down to one and check. Everything else was just planted by my wife except the fruit trees, which do their own thing. When I dig up the winter crop I'll figure out what to plant then.

Sounds like you're having good luck so far, may it continue.

from the (a?) missile strike. Russia may be optimistic about the effectiveness, but it looks like we can either trust a Russian source or a pathetic joke looking for a way out before the end.
And speaking of Elenskyy there's what he knows and what he hopes for. What he knows is that something the defenses will disintegrate When this happens Nazis with guns will come looking for him. What he hopes for is that he will be able to get into exile in some villa somewhere that he's bought with the money he's been skimming so he can live out his life like the Shah Of Iran. There is only 1 other result.

Last fall I cut cabbages and just left the stem base and roots in the ground. They regrew and are about to provide more cabbages. I've had collards perennate like that, but never cabbage.

I think weather has always changed. Climate is certainly in a shift as evidenced by the disappearing ice caps and weakening jet stream. Interesting times.

Nice to keep in touch by gardening. Have a good one!

that have over-wintered and are doing fine.
Will have to try that trick with my cabbage this fall.
Thanks for posting that.

gardens burned up. So far this spring, the rains have been heavy and often. Still, one can only hope full blown summer might not turn into hell.
I have mentioned that the State Bar of Texas is full throttle on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. One free hour of legal ed class is devoted to equal pay for everyone of every color and gender ID to that of, presumably, straight white males. One free hour is devoted to detecting macro aggression against everyone of every color and gender ID exhibited by, presumably, straight white males. The third hour is to get us to vote for the top DEI promoter, and to donate money for the bar group.
Also, I have mentioned advertising/marketing has become the norm in the legal profession that once strictly forbade advertising.
A local attorney advertises how tough she is, represented by her tough Texas boots. She wears cowboy boots, her only footwear. I got a call, understand she was entertaining a courtroom full of spectators and jail chain gang guys waiting to get appointed their lawyer.
Purple, frilly short dress, white leggings, mid-thigh high stark, snow white, cowboy boots. She will have pictures of herself in the courtroom and will put it on her Facebook page.
She is 60. Overweight by 50 lbs.
I think I am exhibiting some macro aggression, friends.
I blame my parents.
I have not seen, in damn near 40 years of practice, a single instance of an attorney being unprofessional to anybody in the business, except this Texas boots wild thing.

@earthling1 I heard about it from an attorney pal who was observing the shit show. She had to call me to give me a good laugh.
I then had to call an assistant district attorney to discuss a case, and since boots had ragged on him in court, I told him about the shit show. Right down to the obvious dimples on her butt.
Well, he said he had the image in his head. I told him, say "Thank you", and he said "Thank you. Aaaaahhhhggg...."
Our Lawyer's Creed and Code of Conduct, and the dress code, is going down the toilet.
If I could describe her voice and pronunciation, you would lose your dinner.
Thanks so much for the OT! And congrats on the raised beds gardening experiment. Great job!

In fact, I've heard less than normal about anything this past half-week, since there were nearly 48 hours over the weekend where, from the sound of it, nearly THE ENTIRE COUNTY I reside in was without Internet, or even cell-phone service.

doesn't get Xfinity cel service. They have 10G, woof.
Soon, Tmobile will have 20G or something like that. Eventually, someone will boast 100G and Ameicans will stand in line for hours to buy it.
But none of them are as good as the Chinese Huawei 5.5G.
Glad you got yours back and come to visit us.
Thanks for the post.

@earthling1 I literally just had to check whether XFinity was American; it is.

I've lived my whole life in former Mexican territory; these days I keep wishing they'd swallow us back up.
