Friday Night Photos Leftovers Edition

Happy Friday everyone, I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

It's been a whole week in sunny San Diego with no sun. We began the week with below normal temps along with heavy mist and light sprinkles that increased to heavy showers yesterday and today with more rain in the forecast for tomorrow.
Between the lousy weather and projects around the house I didn't get out with the camera again this week so I've got some more photos from my visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Is that a Japanese squirrel? In my neck of the woods the squirrels are either all black or all grey.

Hopefully your weather will improve.

@humphrey Hey Humphrey,

Fox Squirrel or Eastern Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger. The genus pronunciation would be with a silent i and so scurus, as in scurry. They are introduced in southern California, and many other areas, and were maybe the abundant squirrel of much of the forested eastern U.S., until you get northward. The introductions around the country were largely due to the Cemetery business. In the back of any of their industry magazines up to at least the 1980's, they were advertised and widely sold, to make it more serene and peaceful for mourners. In many places they were non-native. Amazingly Cal Fish & Game was asleep at the switch on this one. They are horrible nest predators actively hunting and eating bird eggs and nestlings all breeding season. Many squirrels do that, including Gray Squirrel. They have taken over the entire L.A Basin.

sorry about the 'more than you wanted to know' part...

Snark is always welcome.
I believe the squirrel is a Fox Squirrel. It's not native to Ca but was introduced here from the eastern half of the US. I see them all around Balboa Park but nowhere else in San Diego. What I see everywhere else are California Ground Squirrels.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Beautiful photos. The place is gorgeous. Looks like a great birding spot. Any creek is worth a walk and look. I love a dense understory, hard as it is to see the little buggers in it.

I will try to get back by with a pixel or two later, gotta fly!

I didn't see that many birds, but I wasn't looking for birds. Next time I visit I'll have to spend some time looking for them. Hope to see you back later.

@Socialprogressive At botanic gardens in general I have found those heavy on the non-natives have very little insect activity often, and few birds. At the South Coast Botanic Gardens on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Rolling Hills the non-native areas are neat to see different botany, but there are few birds in them. Save perhaps some flowering species which then get bugs followed by birds. Orioles in Coral trees and so on. Areas with natives will have a full compliment of native insects, and birds, using them. Those decorative purple leafed Plum trees for instance virtually never attract birds. No fruit! But they made the leaves purple! How is that a win? Smile

Creeks can also be good for dragonflies, there are some that just perch along moving water like that.

Welcome to my nightmare.
To be fair, we had two days of sun (Tuesday and Wednesday) got some seeds in the ground but the rain is back and continues through next week. Planted some Milkweed starts and hope to see some Monarch butterflies in the near future.

Good to hear you got a few days of sun. Hopefully more will be on the way soon. Our long range forecast shows sunny and 70 for next week. Good luck with your Milkweed. Hope you get lots of Monarchs.

I hope your snow melts before July. Whenever it does melt, I'm looking forward to seeing what you see. Give Sam a belly rub from me.

I have a video of Sam playing in a mud hole and getting every inch of her muddy. Since the snow melted she is back to jumping in the creek and then coming over to me to shake the water off. 2 miles away? No problem she will wait. It’s always fun to watch dawgs having fun in water or mud.

She has spent the last 4 days in bed for some reason. She gets up in the morning and has some coffee and then goes back to bed. Has some chicken and back to bed. Has a chewy and back to bed. Goes for a walk and then back to bed….she comes out for a treat and back to bed. She seems fine and eats well, but it’s been worrisome for me cuz it’s just not her routine. Today she spent a little time outside but now she’s back in bed. But as she went she said to tell you all hey…

Thank you for the leftovers. The pinecone makes me wonder about its life process. What happens to the new needle growth coming from it? Do the individual parts/seeds(?) fall off and the new needles continue to grow? How come some pinecones fall whole while others hang on and produce new growth. Are pinecones either male or female? Maybe the answer is there in the older growth you can see underneath in the photo. What a mystery it all is.

Nothing but rain, all week long.

I think we in NZ have to cultivate a new relationship with rain, not that rain hasn’t always been a feature of the climate and culture here.

Thankfully, even with the generous amount we’ve had recently, my house and land have remained stable since the landslip 3 plus months ago.

Stay safe and well all and enjoy the weekend.

Those are all very good questions. Maybe I could do a time lapse of the pinecone to see how it develops. Hope you're able to get a break from the rain. I know I'd be a little nervous about a lot of rain if I had gone through what you did just a few months ago.
Enjoy your weekend too.

Thank you for your understanding.

A time lapse would be fascinating.

If you are interested or easily able to watch a NZ film titled Rain, then I strongly recommend it. It's a lot more than about rain.

@janis b Hi Janis,

Beautiful photo, guessing it reflects your mood after maybe too much rain? Smile Great shapes and light as always. Love your compositions!

A lot of conifers have different male flowers, or like a cattail self pollenate as they grow. SP's photo may be of a male flower and not a cone per se, yet. But it does not appear a North American species, so I am stupid about whatever it is. Many of our coned types drop them, others stay on the tree and the seeds fall out of the cone as it opens. A fair number need a fire to get them to open and germinate. Like Eucs. Crossbills have a special bill to get the seeds out of the cones, and the 9 types of Red Crossbill found in the U.S., besides a couple generalists, each type is associated with a specific couple species of pines they can get at best. Lodgepole crossbills are different from Spruce crossbills, and so on, and each of the types can be distinguised by calls.

You always help me understand the mysteries of nature more fully, and introduce me to new varieties and natural behaviours.

You identified the mood perfectly. I am making an effort, and progressing I think, in translating that mood into something more familiar and comforting. I hope the natural environment supports my effort, and I very much appreciate your support.

Hi all,

Still workin' here, can't hang out, but here is a pic from the other day...

This is a male Blue Grosbeak. They breed here and I never see them at the birdbath, for years. So this was a surprise. The color of the wingbars in natural history terms is chestnut, rufous, or bay.

ABFAB photos and videos as always! Smile And the original Allman Brothers Band. "Dreams" is my favorite ABB tune, and one of my top beloved rock tunes. They never were the same after Duane Allman and Barry Oakley killed themselves in bike accidents. Glad to hear you both are getting much, much needed precipitation, Sp and snoopy. It's breezy, warm and dry here. Some wildfires but nothing serious. Storm season (Blech!) is slowly cranking up. Sad Speaking of squirrels and mudholes, I've got two booger Beagles. Constantly watching to make sure a squirrel doesn't fall out of a tree, sick or injured. And a mudhole?? Dawg manna from heaven. Anywho, Rec'd!
