02/27 - International Polar Bear Day

Polar bear jumping

~~ Polar Bear Jumping

(Ahem) The Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus is the largest living land predator and the largest living bear species. It is a hypercarnivore, which means that 70% or more of its diet is meat. It has white fur. It Lives above the arctic circle and is considered to be a marine mammal, like the sea otter, because it is dependent upon sea ice for its survival. Because of the impact of global warming upon the sea ice, it is considered to be a vulnerable species. It has many names in many languages, including nanuq, pronounced nanook, and, ya got to be kidding me, Oshkúj, which comes from the Komi oski, "bear"; go Bears.

It is the twenty-seventh. Twenty-seven is cool because it is a perfect cube, 33. It is also self-locating in pi. Counting up from zero, the 27th and 28th digits after the decimal are 2 and 7, respectively. The US Interstate Highway System includes an interstate highway numbered I-27, which runs from Lubbock to Amarillo. Seemingly somebody was unclear as to the meaning of "interstate", but, whatever.

There's a polar bear club that goes swimming on New years day.
https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/ny-coney-island-polar-bear...

I save my swimming ventures for warmer weather.

I have a bit of a connection to Hugo Black. He married into a family I know.

On February 23, 1921, Black married Josephine Foster, daughter of a prominent family and sister of future civil rights activist Virginia Foster Durr. The couple would have three children, Hugo Black Jr., Sterling Black, and Josephine Black Pesaresi.
...
Justice Black is remembered as one of the nation's foremost champions of the First Amendment and, in his words, the rights of the "weak, helpless, and outnumbered."

Hope all is well. Thanks for the OT and all the music.

@Lookout Hey LO! You probably missed the Polar Bear Club down in the Yucatan? Wink Actually, I have somewhere here my honorary membership card to the Polar Bear Club. Given to me by the President of said club in Brooklyn N.Y. He owned a business machine company there. I was in the sign biz, working in 'the city' often, '82-84. Met a few times and he was fascinated by this seawatching thing birders did.

I explained how I went to Montauk on the coldest most blustery northeasterlies Dec. to March to count passing seabirds blown in. We would spend 6-8 hours with eye glued to telescope, wearing everything we owned, in zero and sub-zero temperatures and below chill factors. To catch look at a Razorbill, Dovekie, or King Eider flying by, Purple Sandpipers, Thick-billed Murre, Snow Bunting, Snowy Owl, and so on. Which we did. After one weekend watch he knew how bad it was out there, and when I told of our watch, he reached in a desk drawer, pulled out a card and signed it, said I was a Polar Bear! Smile One of my great achievements in life. Winter of 84-85 wife and I did same at Cape Ann, Massachusetts, which was way better than Montauk for alcids. And had a spot you could park and scope from protection of car.

In my youth every summer we were swimming in the high Sierra in snowmelt near the treeline though, so I do not have a problem jumping into icy water that many do. The swimming hole lots of us used near Big Pine in the Owens Valley, eastern CA, was 35 deg. F, warmed 4dF since it left Palisades Glacier an hour ago... Smile

The native Americans sure had a thing about jumping into cold water, from the hot house!

Have a good one!

Hedges tells us about the state of journalism in amerikkka
and that story isn't pretty at all. For although the
press is still free, it is free only in that it follows
whatever the narrative it is given by tptb. Russiagate
being the perfect example of purely concocted BS

The press no longer does the job it was once admired for. In
reality the press has become a beacon of fantasy while leaving
facts in the dark hole of space.

Dear friends

Quick reminder: we are about to freeze the blog and announce how/where to download the archive from. I expect the details posted here on Tuesday.

I will immensely miss the Saker and its brilliant essays. A few will transfer their work to the Pepe Escobar site, but I don’t have the address. If anyone does please share.

I think Andrei saw what happened to Jerome Armstrong and other writers at strategic culture and decided it’s just not worth the risk anymore. Anyone who denies that government censorship isn’t happening should read why he is closing the site. Do not go against government narrative or else.

An Existential Threat

What Mr. Putin said, when read through the lens of international law, should be chilling to the West.

We would do well to remember that Mr. Putin majored in international law. His speech made a legal case against NATO.

First he listed, by my count, 30 different ways in which the Western nations have attacked Russia. These included the expansion of NATO to Russia’s borders, support of terrorists in Russia, economic war, terrorist sabotage of the Nordstream Pipeline, financing of the coup and war in Ukraine, directly assisting Ukraine to attack targets in Russia including Russia’s nuclear bombers, and plotting to destroy and partition Russia into pieces.

Nestled in the middle of these was an important statement.

“This means they plan to finish us once and for all. In other words, they plan to grow a local conflict into a global confrontation. This is how we understand it and we will respond accordingly, because this represents an existential threat to our country.”

Putin’s choice of words is extremely significant in light of Russian nuclear doctrine, which states that nuclear weapons could be used by Russia “in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies, and also in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened.”

Among the 30 points of evidence of the American war on Russia, Mr. Putin listed several cases of American use of conventional weapons against Russian territory through Ukraine as the thinly veiled proxy, and stated that this represents an “existential threat to [the Russian State].”

What Mr. Putin has just told us is that the Kremlin now considers nuclear use condition #2 to be true, today.

This statement was accompanied by two related actions. The day before the speech Russia tested a Sarmat II ICBM. And at the end of the speech, Mr. Putin announced that Russia shall immediately withdraw from the START II treaty, which limits the number and range of their nuclear missiles.

These three statements and events together should tell the collective West that Russia has just said “Get off my porch!”, and cocked the forty-five.

I strongly recommend reading the rest because he next talks about how Russia has been building up its defensive capabilities and how outmatched the US is compared to what Russia has done. Then you have to consider whether Europe has any defensive systems at all. France and the uk have nuclear weapons and we have put some in Germany too. I think that Russia is walking softly, but carrying a big stick.

There are many NATO troops in Ukraine that have disguised themselves as Ukrainian soldiers and a few have admitted that. I read that somewhere yesterday and good luck for me to find it again.

"I take off my country’s uniform and put on a Ukrainian one."

Plus Biden has sent 10,000 American soldiers to Poland and there are more in Romania and gawd only knows how many were sent during Obama’s reign of terror. Plus Biden has sent more to Germany. I’m just hoping that NATO doesn’t have enough weapons left to actually start a fight with Russia. And how in hell are we going to fight China too? And yes he’s ramping up tensions with China. A few days ago the military flew over the Taiwan strait and then bitched about China sending a plane to shadow it. Plus he’s sending more troops to Taiwan and republicans are set to go there. Meanwhile here at home….80 million people are set to lose Medicaid and millions more are going to have their food stamp benefits cut bigly! And it seems that every other day Biden is sending millions and billions to Ukraine. He’s going to fund the pensions and health care, but Americans aren’t even worth thinking about.

Well the good news is that we aren’t subjected to mean tweets anymore so there’s that.

Hi all, Hey EL! Hope its all good out there!

Now THAT'S a bear! A great charismatic environmental flagship species if there ever was one. The Antarctic got Penguins.

The hero on the list today is Grinnell... Joseph is a hero to me. I think his 1915 Birds of California, published as No. 1 in the now famous Pacific Coast Avifauna series was a major breakthrough in state accounts for its detail and comprehensive thoroughness. Then what is called by birders Grinnell & Miller", his 1944 work with Alden, is a birders bible for those interested in status and distribution of birds in California. Long out of print, Artemisa Press in Lee Vining reprinted it in 1986, which is the paperback most of us have.

The 1944 work added habitats at a level probably never prior done, which was Alden Miller's side. He was a habitat guy. Recently a group of biologists have been going to all the major station locations where his incredibly detailed botanic notes are from, and recording everything now, to note changes since Miller's descriptions which were written in first half of last century. Should be fascinating.

There is a similar type of work published by Texas A & M Press I have somewhere here. "A hundred years and 500 miles", or maybe I have those metrics backwards. This was a photographic survey done in the 1980's I think. It went to each site of the photographs taken along the Rio Grande for the U.S.G.S. surveys of the late 1800's and early 1900's, and re-photographed the exact landscape from the same points. One can see why there were still Jaguar on the Rio Grande then, and not now. The orig. photos are largely pre-overgrazing by goats and sheep. Much of the latter stuff is denuded, forever altered, by a generation or two of overgrazing.

Loved Steinbeck's Log from the Sea of Cortez as a teen. Konrad Lorenz was pretty rad too. Smile
