A love letter from New Zealand to Bob Marley

There’s a documentary on TVNZ, When Bob Came, which explores the cultural and political impact Bob Marley’s 1979 visit to New Zealand had on this country, and still lives strongly. It’s free if you log in to TVNZ, but I totally understand that most won’t be inclined to. But for those enduring Bob Marley fans it will be a treat.

From episode 4 ...

Interviewer - "Do you have to smoke to be a Rasta?"

Bob - "No man, but, in this time, like for instance you reaching a sense where you strong enough that when all them cars pass in the city you don’t even hear them because you thinking, you know, because the whole world confuse you and you’re worried, and you don’t have the time to think, and herb is the thing that give you a little time to yourself, so you can live."

We all need a little extra time to think. Unbelievably, marijuana is still a criminal offence here. Two years ago there was a referendum to legalise marijuana which failed by less than 2% of the vote. Unfortunately the government did nothing to stimulate a meaningful discussion of the subject. If they had, I think the vote would have been very different.

So many people *still* believe everything they saw in "Reefer Madness"...

Especially the piano guy. That left a mark.

It's pot users who SHOULD have the guns. All of them!

What a poorer place Aotearoa and the world would be without them, thanks Bob.

Coincidently, or not, on the same day, two days ago, I received an email notification of FFD's 2023 European Gig Guide. They have never performed in America because of the cost and complication of work visas. Too bad. The first time I heard them was on sound waves wafting through the air from an outdoor reserve close by, maybe 20 years ago now?

They [Fat Freddy's Drop] have never performed in America because of the cost and complication of work visas.

Actually, I found one concert that Fat Freddy's Drop gave in the USA. It was at Amoeba Music, San Francisco, California on November 18, 2009.

(I estimate the chances of any non-Grateful Dead heads in that audience to be at or near zero!!)

So here's the concert:

They're so good.

I wonder what changed and why after that performance in SF?
