The "RAD" - Asheville's creative center known as the River Arts District.

~

Welcome today. Wandering around Asheville last week, found this great creative
consortium of re-purposed mills and warehouses. It is the home of many artist
co-ops representing many mediums. About 270 artisans work and show here.
Brewerys, wineries, restaurants, a green way, bike path round out the scene.

Today is international monkey day! Be sure to hug your monkey
(unless she is on your back - that may be awkward).

Some snow on the ground here, wind chill is about 14 degrees F.
But the sun is shining. Got the dreaded Covid, but it is fairly mild.
May give the IVM stash a shot.

Hope your day is pleasant.

and for the Stones. Always a good beginning to the official day, regardless of how long one has been up and about.

Was just informed by my wife that we just had a small quake, she only knew because stuff rattled against the wall. Got down to 34F, so no frost damage yet (whew). Made sourdough pancakes for breakfast today and am now glued to office chair. (Except for the 3 minute avian distraction I just suffered - things get crazy in our yard at times.) Looks like you had a fruitful and enjoyable time in Asheville. The one time we hit it we had very little time and hence skipped the RAD - need to go back, but it's a long drive and flying sucks more every passing day.

In honor of Monkey Day, the Monkees some Monkey business:

@QMS Somehow, I never made it to there.
I hate to hear you got sick with The Rona. IVM will help, as well as vit D3. I pack those whenever I leave town. Get over it, dude!
I love the art you posted. That art district sounds/looks pretty awesome.
Thanks for the OT, and take good care of yourself.
Oh...I had a client/friend who built specialty fences. He fenced up the winery at the Biltmore. He had taught business courses in a University in Florida, spent years as a banker, said to hell with academia and banksters, and went to the woods and fields, loves his life.Somewhere, I have a tee shirt he brought from the gift shop there.

the 3 minute avian distraction

I am presently enjoying a 65+ year long avian distraction event. Story of my life brother. If one expects full-time eye-contact with me in conversation we better go inside to talk. And cover the windows. Wink

be well amigo!

I like Asheville. Played a gig at Biltmore house one time, and have played several dances in town, at Mars Hill, and in black mountain. Lots of music there as well as other arts.

Bascom Lamar Lunsford helped to promote traditional music in the area.

Lunsford lived a rather extraordinary life that lasted 91 years and included two long marriages, seven children, being mentored by Robert Winslow Gordon, recording for Frank C. Brown, performing for the Roosevelts and the King and Queen of England, and working for the Works Progress Administration. He had close professional relationships with influential figures like Sarah Gertrude Knott, Sam Queen, and Samantha Bumgarner, among others. Lunsford was also active in politics throughout his life, and, like his collecting, his political and civic life reflected the racial divisions and political tensions of the 20th century.

In addition to collecting traditional songs, Lunsford composed several new ones, including "Good Old Mountain Dew" in 1920. In 1929 he and composer Lamar Stringfield collaborated on 30 and 1 Folk Songs from the Southern Mountains, a volume of songs arranged with musical accompaniment. Lunsford's major contribution to the perpetuation of folk music was the formation and promotion of folk festivals. In 1927 he advised the Asheville Chamber of Commerce to add a program of dancing and singing to its Rhododendron Festival. The program was so successful that the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival was established the next year. Lunsford organized or helped to found numerous festivals throughout his life, including the first National Folk Festival in St. Louis in 1934.

A high point in his career as a performer and promoter occurred in 1939, when he and his Soco Gap dance team performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. In 1949 Lunsford represented the United States at the first International Folk Festival in Venice, Italy. He spent his later years at home in South Turkey Creek, near Leicester, where he continued to receive and entertain visitors and to participate in local festivals until his death at age ninety-one. He was buried in the Old Brick Church Cemetery, Leicester.

Glad you enjoyed the Carolinas! Thanks for the OT!

in a place called Lake Lure, just south of there. It was once a valley town called
Buffalo. The valley was dammed and flooded. Buffalo now stands under 200'
of water.

The Biltmore was pretty amazing. Especially enjoyed the Conservatorium.
They also had a interactive display on Leonardo Di Vinci at the art center.

thanks for sharing the musical side!

question everything

@QMS but I was more impressed by the work of the forestry and the guy who made it work. I don't remember the particulars and my research would take me away too much from my current tasks.

In effect, from my recollection, this guy could almost be considered the father of management of resources to maximize the potentials. Oh, is was so wonderful that Vanderbilt bought into the potential and did the investment but the vision was Olmsted. Neither would have been accompished without the other. Quite an inspiration for us all. Tho I am nowhere near the achievements of Olmsted, I feel that he and I would have so much in common, tho on a different scale.

I see that same scenario in so many areas and I believe that is the vision that one of my main heroes from long ago had. Ie, RFK. What we might have accomplished.

Examples? Butchart Gardens. A man with resources and a wife with vision and fortitude. Today we remember the wife.

Beatrix Potter. When we visited Hill Top and learned the background and what she accomplished.

And the list is almost endless. Roebling. Jacquard. Hollerith.

And here we are... quo vadis?

To digress a bit: Ya know, that Bologna education system is crap.

This is absolutely awesome.

I believe it shows that people, we the people, are the future. The investment class has been shoving so much into the areas of cities that provide them return because their passion is profit.

We, the people's, passion is creativity where the profit is in non-monetary terms. I believe that if we can stay the course, the people will emerge. (Note crossed fingers).

On a personal note, I broke my primary desktop machine, the Win7 one, last night. In trying to transition my email from POP to IMAP, Edge snuck in and turned on auto-updating.

BTW, Edge is gone and not coming back.

Thanks again.

Next week, I and Dear One will spend Christmas in Galveston.
Well, I haven't had time to sort of plan out where to go, what to see.
Then, a client walks in unannounced, asks if I could prepare a deed. Well, he lives in Galveston. He is co-owner and manager of 4 restaurants on The Strand. He's lived there all his life, knows all the cool places to eat, hear live music, and where to go to visit wildlife refuges.
Good thing I didn't waste my time doing research!
It is great that site members are getting out to get away from the tasks of everyday life, and away from some of the horrid news that spews every few minutes.

@on the cusp Isn't it amazing how the cosmic kismet of karma happens? You don't even have to ask and you receive! You must be livin' right. Wink

I haven't been to Galveston in decades, but used to spend a fair bit of time in the area. Take the Bolivar Ferry (free and with dolphins often) to the east landing. Then proceed east a short distance a mile maybe, to I think Retillon Rd., turn right, it goes out to beach which you can drive on, turn right at beach and drive down to the bollards where park. From there it is a fantastic walk (on sand) towards the mudflats at point, usually with few or no people, ATV's etc.. And at the tip of that spit (Bolivar Pt. maybe), thousands and thousands of birds usually on the flats. Unless a Peregrine has been by recently. It is one of Texas' great beach walks.

High Island the famous spring migration fallout site is usually fairly dead for birds in fall-winter. The driving loop at Anahuac NWR on the east side of the Galv. Bay is fantastic bird and wildlife viewing. At the west end of Galveston Is. is San Luis Pass. Nothin' there. An access road goes down to the point at west end there just before the toll booths at the bridge. Fisherman access spot. Again, a great place for more birds, less people, and good fishin'.

Of course in Galveston, the Balinese (of ZZ Top song fame) burned down long ago...

Have a great trip!

@dystopian The first location after taking the ferry is the first place my client mentioned. Sounds fun! Who wouldn't love a walk on the beach? We hope to have time to see both spots. It may rain some, but won't spoil the vacay.
We were told the band voted "Best Rock Band in Galveston" for the past 4 or 5 years in a row plays Thursday nights at B. Jigger's. That will be our first night there. Woo hoo!

Hi all, Hey QMS!

Nice art, sounds a neat spot. Those art enclaves are invariably very cool.

Stones hit it out of the park with Monkey Man. What a great song and piece of music.

Here's another fave Monkey song, can't believe it is over 50 years old now...

Yeah man hit that IVM... get well soon!

be well all!

the vibrant arts and crafts community in NC. That is an ideal type of community; one that is full of local artists, and small locally owned business, local independent small farms, etc..
I clicked on the fiber artists that you showcased above...that was nice...not as nice as being there, but good to see their work. Thanks QMS.
Hope you get over that dreaded stuff soon. Take it easy and baby yourself excessively.
