The only Identity that matters is wealth

I thought that this headline was a joke when I saw it. It turns out that it wasn't.

Before Katie Layne Quackenbush opened fire in the early morning hours of Aug. 26, 2017, she was arguing with Gerald Melton. He had been awakened by exhaust fumes and music from Quackenbush’s Porsche SUV, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Melton later testified that Quackenbush asked him if he "wanted to die tonight.”

Melton said he was walking away from Quackenbush’s vehicle when she drew a gun from her purse, exited the SUV and fired two shots. Quackenbush then drove with a passenger to a Taco Bell before returning home.

Neither Quackenbush nor her passenger initially reported the shooting, police said. Instead, a person who found Melton called for help.

Melton, who was 54 at the time, survived but underwent at least three surgeries due to his injuries.

So now you're thinking this was a clear cut case of a privileged white woman who victimized a homeless man. But you're wrong.
It was the white woman that is the victim here.

"This has been the worst experience of my life, but I'm grateful that I had it, because it has changed me so dramatically to the core," Quackenbush, now 32, said Thursday.

After a two-day trial in April, Quackenbush was convicted of reckless endangerment, which is a misdemeanor.

A judge sentenced her to 11 months and 29 days of probation Thursday morning, ending the controversial yearslong case.

It was the worst experience of HER life, you see. Because this was about HER.
And just because she tried to kill a guy who posed absolutely no danger to her doesn't mean that she should have been convicted of attempted murder.
She drove a Porsche for eff sake, and he didn't have a car at all.

She said her mugshot went viral online after her arrest. Quackenbush also said she endured public ridicule, was spit on and received death threats. She also found it difficult to find work and get accepted into college. She described it as having "one foot in purgatory and the other in real life."

There you go. Quackenbush has been shunned by society. Unlike that homeless guy she shot. Isn't that punishment enough?
I'll just add a few more random items.

This is so disgusting. I really don't have anything else to say about it. Is this really what we have come to? To have so little empathy for one another?

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

severely cross eyed person with a Porsche and a handgun shoots a homeless person IN THE BACK?
Well deserved.
Reminds me of my uncle, arrested for having a handgun in a stolen Porsche.
Reminds me of Adidas in Heat.

When you can afford a good lawyer, you can buy justice.

The lack of wealth is also a factor. That is why we are in a domestic class war.
Fogettabout red and blue. It's about wealth and poverty imo.

Thanks for the essay.

It's not contagious. Believe me, I tried. Wonder how much the judge made on this.

Wasn't there something called street justice, y'know, where they hang an old tire around your neck and set it on fire.

She was not made to remove her glasses.
She would look quite differently without them. Hence, the next cop or next pissed off friend of the homeless might not recognize her.
It happens daily, all over the US, every court, at every level.

Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.

@Pricknick Standard procedure is to remove glasses for mug shots, driver's license and passport ID photos. All over the US.
Not sure what you have been up to the last 36 years, but I have been a member of the State Bar of Texas since Nov. 6, 1986. Not sure what your DL photo looks like, either. Passport?
I will remain a so-called lawyer until I die, unless cops, district attorneys, judges, preachers, and other so-called lawyers stop sending me clients.
The sick thinking seems to be coming from your house, not mine.

@lotlizard gives "sick thinking" lots of clarity.
I have mentioned here numerous times that representing a wealthy criminal defendant is much less difficult than a poor defendant.

@Lily O Lady wealthy defendant will be treated by the justice system. The top lawyer in Texas is receiving special treatment 7 years after his arrest.

Then as now, there's not much I can think to add except, 'OMG LOL her name is actually Quackenbush'.

She should be sentenced to a lifetime of being heckled by Marx Brothers.

I'm appalled and disgusted, but not surprised.

It's the old "blonde in a Porsche" loophole, I guess. I gotta work on that: getting younger, blonder, porscher, and grow some ladybumps. Then maybe I could rule the world, too.

She mentioned her “terrible” hardships, but nowhere in the article can I find how she could afford a Porsche SUV with all her privations! That has been cleverly hidden.
