Open Thread - 10-21-22 - Site Maintenance

I've been working on the site the last couple of days, you may have noticed. I'm getting ready for a major upgrade. This particular version of our site software deprecates in about a year and will no longer be supported with updates, so I might as well tackle it now. There'll be periods of down time, I'll try to keep them as brief as possible. If the site will be down for an extended period I'll try to do it during a time of lower traffic.

There will probably be some glitches while I work on it, I already know about the video bug, I'll try to straighten that out today. The "Video URL" box below the text editor works almost the same as the video icon in the toolbar, just drop the video URL in it and it will post. Also see the FAQs for other ways to post videos, at least until I can get the bug worked out. But I expect more bugs so if you spot something that isn't working correctly let me know. Bugs are always golly good fun, not.

When I do finally make the major upgrade I really don't know what to expect. We may lose some functions and features and we may gain others. I'll let you all know when that's about to happen. I hope to work out all of the bugs in a dev site before it goes live.

This will be a non-topical open thread so you all will have to talk it up, as if there isn't enough to talk about going on around the world anyway.

thanks for all of the excellent comments in my one sentence open thread last week. Sometimes it's best for me to get out of the way in the comment threads and let you folks have at it. That was one of those times. There was some great commentary, I thank you for that.

I don't know if I'll have much time today to participate in the comment threads, but I'll try, in between screams of anguish, that is. Heh.

Biden administration officials are discussing whether the US should subject some of Elon Musk’s ventures to national security reviews, including the deal for Twitter Inc. and SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, according to people familiar with the matter.

Twitter shares fell 5.1% as the market opened in New York on Friday.

US officials have grown uncomfortable over Musk’s recent threat to stop supplying the Starlink satellite service to Ukraine -- he said it had cost him $80 million so far -- and what they see as his increasingly Russia-friendly stance following a series of tweets that outlined peace proposals favorable to President Vladimir Putin. They are also concerned by his plans to buy Twitter with a group of foreign investors.

The discussions are still at an early stage, the people familiar said on condition of anonymity. Officials in the US government and intelligence community are weighing what tools, if any, are available that would allow the federal government to review Musk’s ventures.

One possibility is through the law governing the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to review Musk’s deals and operations for national security risks, they said.
