Destroying Deutschland and Murdering Europe

Open Thread image.jpg

What an eventful week. The referenda in the break away Ukrainian provinces opt by 90+% to join Russia - Which happened yesterday in a ceremony with a powerful "no holds barred" speech by Putin blasting the neo-colonialism of the West. (video here) Russia's 300,000 soldier mobilization is progressing despite western spin that it is a failure. Perhaps in a temper tantrum the US (in all likelihood) blew up the natural gas pipelines from Russia to Germany guaranteeing their decline and de-industrialization. The UK is in free fall with the rest of Europe following suit. Let's look at this and more below the fold.

I think we witnessed a major power shift this week with Putin's speech as the turning point.
Nice recap of Putin's speech on MoA

Western countries have been saying for centuries that they bring freedom and democracy to other nations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of bringing democracy they suppressed and exploited, and instead of giving freedom they enslaved and oppressed. The unipolar world is inherently anti-democratic and unfree; it is false and hypocritical through and through.
...
Recall that during WWII the United States and Britain reduced Dresden, Hamburg, Cologne and many other German cities to rubble, without the least military necessity. It was done ostentatiously and, to repeat, without any military necessity. They had only one goal, as with the nuclear bombing of Japanese cities: to intimidate our country and the rest of the world.

The United States left a deep scar in the memory of the people of Korea and Vietnam with their carpet bombings and use of napalm and chemical weapons.

It actually continues to occupy Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and other countries, which they cynically refer to as equals and allies. Look now, what kind of alliance is that? The whole world knows that the top officials in these countries are being spied on and that their offices and homes are bugged. It is a disgrace, a disgrace for those who do this and for those who, like slaves, silently and meekly swallow this arrogant behaviour.

They call the orders and threats they make to their vassals Euro-Atlantic solidarity, and the creation of biological weapons and the use of human test subjects, including in Ukraine, noble medical research.

It is their destructive policies, wars and plunder that have unleashed today’s massive wave of migrants. Millions of people endure hardships and humiliation or die by the thousands trying to reach Europe.

They are exporting grain from Ukraine now. Where are they taking it under the guise of ensuring the food security of the poorest countries? Where is it going? They are taking it to the self-same European countries. Only five percent has been delivered to the poorest countries. More cheating and naked deception again.

In effect, the American elite is using the tragedy of these people to weaken its rivals, to destroy nation states. This goes for Europe and for the identities of France, Italy, Spain and other countries with centuries-long histories.

Washington demands more and more sanctions against Russia and the majority of European politicians obediently go along with it. They clearly understand that by pressuring the EU to completely give up Russian energy and other resources, the United States is practically pushing Europe toward deindustrialisation in a bid to get its hands on the entire European market. These European elites understand everything – they do, but they prefer to serve the interests of others. This is no longer servility but direct betrayal of their own peoples. God bless, it is up to them.

But the Anglo-Saxons believe sanctions are no longer enough and now they have turned to subversion. It seems incredible but it is a fact – by causing explosions on Nord Stream’s international gas pipelines passing along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, they have actually embarked on the destruction of Europe’s entire energy infrastructure. It is clear to everyone who stands to gain. Those who benefit are responsible, of course.

The full speech is quite the expose on the western imperialism.

The results of the recent referendums in Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson are in, and with returns of roughly 90 percent of residents favoring joining Russia, Vladimir Putin has announced that these regions will be annexed by Russia. The U.S. and other Western nations have denounced these referendums as a sham, but that won’t impact the facts on the ground, which appear to foretell Ukraine losing roughly one-fifth of its territory.

Hudson gets to the bottom of what Germany’s downfall will mean for the euro and what the options are for Global South and Eurasian countries as they try to stand up to US hegemony.

The reaction to the sabotage of three of the four Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in four places on Monday, September 26, has focused on speculations about who did it and whether NATO will make a serious attempt to discover the answer. Yet instead of panic, there has been a great sigh of diplomatic relief, even calm. Disabling these pipelines ends the uncertainty and worries on the part of US/NATO diplomats that nearly reached a crisis proportion the previous week, when large demonstrations took place in Germany calling for the sanctions to end and to commission Nord Stream 2 to resolve energy shortage.

The German public was coming to understand what it meant that their steel companies, fertilizer companies, glass companies and toilet-paper companies were shutting down. These companies were forecasting that they would have to go out of business entirely – or shift operations to the United States – if Germany did not withdraw from the trade and currency sanctions against Russia and permit gas and oil imports to resume, and presumably to fall back from their astronomical eight to tenfold increase.

Contractors Cash in as Congress Adds Billions to the Pentagon Budget

The leading advocates of more Pentagon spending, Democrats and Republicans alike, generally act to support major contractors in their jurisdictions. Representative Jared Golden (D-ME), a co-sponsor of the House Armed Services Committee proposal to add $37 billion to the Pentagon budget, typically made sure it included funds for a $2 billion guided-missile destroyer to be built at General Dynamics’ shipyard in Bath, Maine.

Similarly, his co-sponsor, Representative Elaine Luria (D-VA), whose district abuts Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipyard, successfully advocated for the inclusion of ample funding to produce aircraft carriers and attack submarines at that complex. Or consider Representative Mike Rogers (R-AL), the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee and a dogged advocate of annually increasing the Pentagon budget by at least 3% to 5% above inflation. He serves a district south of Huntsville, Alabama, dubbed "rocket city" because it’s the home to so many firms that work on missile defense and related projects.

to take Lyman. Russia was able to reinforce and also Putin ordered them not to retreat, turning what could have saved a goodly portion of men and material into a rout. The joke is that the Russians are aiming to tire out the Ukrainian forces by running away so fast the Ukrainians tire just trying to catch them.

I remember reading on here a couple of days ago how Lyman was a brilliant plan to catch and annihilate huge numbers of Ukrainian troops. This morning small groups of survivors from Lyman are making their way on foot through the woods, out of amo, out of food, and water, without officers or non coms, trying to make it to Kreminna and not be shot by the Ukrainians hunting them down. It's anyone's guess if Russia will make a stand at Krminna or keep running to Svatove. One American described it as like shooting squirrels in a pecan orchard, (must be from georgia) he also said he'd never seen so many dead people.

200,000 men had left Russia in response to the most recent draft. Studies show that fascist dictators like Putin who have been in power a long time tend to stay in power until they die. I suspect that some day before too long we will learn that Putin passed away peacefully in his sleep and some generals will have taken over.

Everyone who can, leaves.

An interesting aspect is Telegram. People can still read postings to social media if they so choose. There's still plenty of paid propagandists pumping out false information, but there are also strong war supporters who supply true information. When Russian war bloggers abandon Lyman you know that the place is falling. Individual soldiers send videos and photos home, they talk to their families. It's much much harder to hide the truth these days, and the truth this morning is a full scale rout out of Lyman.

@Lookout

And hopefully they will be able to cement the "results" of free and fair vote on the annexation of 1/5 of Ukraine and then go further into Ukraine and bring the whole country down! Let's ignore the over 200,000 Russian men who have fled over the borders to avoid dying for this sham, and let's ignore the protestors in Russia being crushed for their anti-war public expressions.

And then we can have another conversation about the colonial history of the US and the always pure actions of Russia or the USSR etc.

If you are going to use RT and Scot Ritter and then dismiss every other source of news, then you are bound to get this kind of tale telling. Oh and let's say without a shred of evidence that the US blew up those gas lines. If people can prove our involvement in that, I will certainly listen.

Exposing the US history of colonialism, exploitation, etc. etc. is easy. I can find all that in any Google search, and certainly media has been able to report on it for many years in this country. So Putin's speech on this is no miracle, it's old news, and he's a hypocrite. That is also easy to find out when you look at the history of his country and its behavior in the world and its treatment of its citizens. The rest of his speech was pretty pathological and in my view revealed a desperate man in a corner, which is what we all should fear. He has always had a Russian empire POV narrative embedded in his brain, and his pursuit of that is what will bring his poor country down. He has an almost religious fervor when it comes to his fantasy. I feel very sorry for the average Russian and what is coming for him/her. The loss of science and cultural exchange is the real tragedy, not the so-called Nazis in Ukraine narrative.

Here is another POV that readers here may want to consider... Tom Nichols from The Atlantic Daily..

"There is no way for the poorly supplied and corrupt Russian military to train, house, clothe, and arm 300,000 men anytime soon, and certainly not before winter arrives. In reality, Putin doesn’t even have 300,000 men; he has roughly 300,000 names of male Russian citizens, many of whom will never set foot on a military base. As a strategic matter, this measure is pure idiocy."
"Sending untrained men into battle only to die may be part of Putin’s plan. He is furious about losing, and (as I wrote months ago) he has been spoiling to turn the invasion into a nationalist war against NATO as the only way to save face and motivate the Russian people to endure more sacrifices. And therein lies Putin’s dilemma: How can he infuse that sense of fervor into Russians who couldn’t give a damn about fake republics in Luhansk or Donetsk?"
"The answer, for Putin, is to annex Ukrainian land while claiming that the war is now “to defend our motherland, its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” making it a holy war to protect Russia itself against Ukraine, NATO, and the entire West. Putin then turns Ukraine into “Russia” by taking Russian men from their families, shipping them to Ukraine, getting them killed, and letting their blood soak into the dirt. He could then say, to his own people and to the world, that the buried bones of so many Russian men make Ukraine hallowed ground from which Moscow will never retreat.
(note here that Brezhnev used the same argument when telling Czechoslovakia in 1968 why they shouldn't leave the USSR.

"Your pro-Ukrainian take might be clouding your judgement." Well, I have to say at this point that your pro-Putin take is clouding your judgement. Or at the very least it is preventing a balanced consideration of the Ukraine/Russia issue.

You are entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to my interpretation of the data.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has welcomed the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, calling it a “tremendous opportunity” to divert European Union nations away from Russian energy resources during the oncoming winter cold.

Blinken boasted on Friday that the US is now “the top provider of [liquefied natural gas (LNG)] to Europe,” adding that in addition to exporting its own fuel to Europe, the US is working with European leaders to find methods to “reduce demand” and “speed up the transition to renewables.”

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to terminate our reliance on Russian energy once and for all, and therefore to deprive [Russian President] Vladimir Putin of the weaponization of energy as a means of advancing his imperial aspirations,” the top US diplomat continued.

The 300,000 men that Russia has called up will be reservists from a pool of 25 million. The call-up of 300,000 reservists will concern those who have previously served in the Russian army and have combat experience or specialized military skills. Students or conscripts (young men serving mandatory 12-month terms in the armed forces) will not be included. Russia conscripted an average of 250,000 men every year for the last two decades.

FYI, the Russian speaking people of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast have been asking for help from Russia since 2014, after 14,000 of their citizens were killed from random shelling by the Ukraine government. Putin has finally responded.

@JtC

I don't typically agree with a many of Ban Nock's or Fishtroller's positions, but it doesn't follow that they are simply trolls and out for disruption.

It *is* true (for example) that a lot of Russians have fled the country to avoid service, they did retreat from Lyman and there has been a lot of criticism w/in Russia of how the Ukraine operation is being conducted - by Chechen leader Kadyrov, among others.

So, their points are not completely unsupported.

What *is* unsupported is the accusation that they are here simply to disrupt C99.

For better or worse (mostly the latter) BN and FT02 are expressing the propagandized view (if they have any opinion at all) of most Americans about the Ukraine situation. If C99ers are unable or unwilling to respond to that in an effective way here, what are the prospects for being able to in the outside world?

@Blue Republic I think Fishtroller got banned, I'm not so familiar with this web site but when I went to take a look at his profile I got some error message.

Be that as it may, I'd hardly call what I post propaganda. Mostly what I say is born out within a couple of days in all sources, Russian, Euro, US, everyone. I mean Lyman really did get overrun, and it wasn't an organised retreat, or even anticipated. The number of Russians fleeing Ukraine is hardly a made up number, border entry keeps track of that kind of thing. I mean Russia really did invade its neighbor, it's not some made up story from bloggers.

Most of my satisfaction comes two days later when I'm proved correct, as with Lymon. All the advanced democracies of the world see things the same way, another large number of countries are silent, and some very bad actors are supportive of Russia.

Putin's latest headache. The Ukrainians have broken through defences in the south, and a much larger group of Russians is caught on the wrong side of a river. While everyone was speechifying in Russia, and running in Lyman, the Ukrainian army was also busy elsewhere.

Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts will officially become part of Russia so Putin can legally order his military in to secure them. At the present time, these forces are currently stationed just outside their borders with massive amounts of their latest equipment.

He was successful in pulling Russia from the brink of dissolution by reversing the edicts put in place by the American puppet Yeltsin, who was installed by the US and was allowing the country to be literally raped and pillaged. (Yes raped - 14-16 year old Russian girls were coerced into prostitution in order to secure enough money to help feed their families.)

You can assured that without Putin in charge, Russia would have been dissected and gutted by the American "Harvard Boys" and would not exist today.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48Kk7kobMQY]

Putin is a trained lawyer and has a long history of doing everything by the 'book'. Here's what the now anti-Russia Brookings Institute said about him in 2012:

Vladimir Putin and the Law
February 28, 2012

ladimir Putin has been busy — he recently published his seventh pre-election article in two months. These lengthy articles cover a dizzying range of issues, from
ethnic integration to
foreign policy. As Mr. Putin’s re-election (or “reappointment” as some have derisively commented) looms, these articles provide a tantalizing window into what to expect from Mr. Putin’s impending third term as president. Some are predictable: Mr. Putin will continue to assert Russia’s interests in the face a dangerous global order and enact policies that will ensure Russia’s stable democratic development. One theme, however, stands out as potentially rather different: the surprising emphasis that Mr. Putin – himself a trained lawyer – places on the role of law in political and economic change.

Reliance on the law has typically been short-lived amongst Russian leaders. From Lenin to Yeltsin, Russian leaders have strategically used legal rhetoric but have ultimately jettisoned legal limitations in the relentless pursuit of their political and economic goals. Mr. Putin’s emphasis on what he has previously called the “dictatorship of law” hints at a different approach, explicitly drawing on a deep tradition of conservative Russian legal thought that begins with the nineteenth century philosopher Boris Chicherin and that persists today in the current chairman of the Russian Constitutional Court, Valery Zorkin. This legalistic form of political thought helped underpin the abolition of serfdom and the constitutional movement of the late Tsarist period. The promise of these reforms was ultimately unfulfilled. Will Mr. Putin finally fulfill this promise?
...
A Dictatorship of the Law

In his opening article on January 17, Mr. Putin proclaims that the Russian state will not allow itself to be swept up in growing forces of instability, but instead will seek to control these forces by actively “setting the rules of the game.” He continues: Russia will “muscle up” by “being open to change” through state sanctioned procedures and rules.

In the domestic arena, he writes, a focus on legality will help Russia avoid its “recurring problem” of straining for “sudden change” and promote “well thought-out, considered reforms.” In his article entitled “Democracy and the Quality of Government,” he emphasizes this point with a quote from a late Tsarist constitutional thinker, Pavel Novgordtsev, who warned that “the proclamation of liberty and universal suffrage” do not “magically” lead to democracy but instead toward “oligarchy or anarchy.” Mr. Putin therefore demands that the opposition employ “democratic” – and here he means state-sanctioned – means for change. To encourage this kind of lawful dispute resolution, he proposes expanding the rights of public organizations to sue government officials and publicizing court proceedings. He also argues that the Russian state should act in a law-based manner. The Russian government almost collapsed in the 1990s, he argues, by yielding to “the temptation of illusions” and a lawless “fortune favors the brave” attitude. But since his rise to power in 2000, adherence to clear rules of the game has helped secure Russia’s stable development in a “democratic, constitutional manner.” Adherence to the law, he argues, must continue or Russia’s democratic development will be put at risk.

I offer some support...
BN posted in one of his Ukraine Nazi War cheerleading posts a few weeks ago about how Ukraine was going to reunite Crimea.

My reply asked if Crimea had a say in it. It explained how Crimea was ethnically Russian, ignuistically Russian, culturally Russian, and have voted to not be part of the Ukies. My post explained how historically they were only gifted to Ukie buddies of Kruschev in the 1950's. For thousands of years Crimea was not Ukraine. These peoples do not care for each other. The Ukies treat them like they do the ethnic Russians in Donestk and Luhansk.

He did not reply to my post. I guess the Crimeans do not get self-determination in his world.

But in another post in the thread he did reply to, one of gj's comments, he off the cuff stated (since gj did not bring it up) that if all the Russians would leave Crimea they wouldn't vote that way anyway.

As if there is anything but Russians in Crimea. And as if all the Texans would leave Texas they would quit voting Texan too. Is it innocent ignorance? Only his 'facts' matter.

He puts a sideways BS reply in another unrelated comment elsewhere, not replying to the facts presented. Proving he is impervious to them.

So we have a few choices. Troll is most polite one.

@ban nock a retired General now active in Russian politics since the subject of an imaginary coup has been brought up.

I suspect that some day before too long we will learn that Putin passed away peacefully in his sleep and some generals will have taken over.

Andrey Gurulyov, a Russian military leader, politician and statesman. Member of the State Duma commission on federal budget expenditures aimed at ensuring national defense, security and law enforcement. Member of the State Duma Defense Committee. Scott Ritter asks for his final thoughts at the end of the interview which was interrupted by a few moments of silence when sound was lost on the USA side of the conversation.

I would like to wish the American people peace and benefit. I would like to wish the American people high level the standard of living. I would like to wish the prosperity and I would like to wish the American people fot its elite, for its establishment to care about the American people and we on the ground will somehow will succeed. Thank you very much.

Brink of nuclear war | New phase in Ukraine conflict | How will Russia defend liberated regions (41.25 min)

A few important statements for me and sorry not sure their point in time during the video. First, regarding using nuclear weapons use in Ukraine. Gurulyov mentions their nuclear weapons are for NATO countries. Second, when discussing post annexation the discussion shifted not to security, but improving the quality of living conditions in the areas. Third, Gurulyov does not consider current conflict a war of choice for Russia and losing an option. Finally fourth, England may suffer worse than America if the conflict expands. There appeared to be underlying anger at Liz Tuss stating she is ready to push the nuclear button.

For American's involved in the conflict as you are suggesting it is still a personal choice.

One American described it as like shooting squirrels in a pecan orchard, (must be from georgia) he also said he'd never seen so many dead people.

Except if enlisted in the military providing training, intelligence, analysis and weapon delivery. American citizens at this moment seem to have no input regarding the future of the conflict. The only course of action I see is trying to stay informed and preparation as for any disaster while appreciating life.

@studentofearth Thank you for the links and quotes, but... I just don't listen or read stuff from either Scott Ritter nor some Russian politician. Other times I've followed links on these pages and they always lead to Russian propagandists or even outright paid web sites of that regime.

Russia is currently a totalitarian state, any politician is complicit or they are out of Russia and publicly disavowing Putin's dictatorship. There's even a new term form the particular Russian form of fascism.

Rashism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump Not to be confused with Racism or Russianism.

A combination of the Saint George's ribbon and the letter Z, both associated with Rashism, which has been compared to the fascist swastika (and called zwastika)[1][2]Part of a series on Fascism

Rashism (Russian: рашизм, romanized: rashizm, pronounced [rɐˈʂɨzm]; a portmanteau of "Russia" and "fascism";[3][4] Ukrainian: рашизм, romanized: rashyzm[4]), also known as Ruscism, Russism (Russian: русизм),[5] or Russian fascism (Russian: русский фашизм), is a term used by a number of scholars, politicians and publicists to describe the political ideology and social practices of the Russian authorities during the rule of Vladimir Putin. It is also used to refer to the ideology of Russian military expansionism,[6][7][1][8] and has been used as a label to describe an undemocratic system and nationality cult mixed with ultranationalism and a cult of personality.[9][10] That transformation was described as based on the ideas of the "special civilizational mission" of the Russians, such as Moscow as the third Rome and expansionism,[11][12][13] which manifests itself in anti-Westernism and supports regaining Imperial lands by conquest.[

It's seldom that every country in the free world recognises such a bad actor, especially if the bad actor is so powerful. It's a case of we should have done something about Putin back when he was blowing up apartment buildings full of Russians, or at least when he started wars with all of his neighbors. Better now than when he is rolling through Poland en route to the rest of Europe.

It does look like we are at a dangerous stage, he has lost 10% of the land he has taken from Ukraine during the last month. Armies don't disintegrate at a uniform rate usually it happens faster and faster, but it's a long way to Crimea. The massive conscription is a sign of a desperate dictator. Everyone is waiting for the nukes, but again, better to deal with that now when they might not even fly.

What's too bad are all the dead people. Mostly Russians but also Ukrainians.

@ban nock range of sources - often conflicting - is difficult. It takes time and practice to obtain the skill for sorting the gems of information from the irrelevant or nefarious. Each of us have different skill levels. Can empathize with your not wanting to take the time to watch the video.

The wikipedia page on Rashism was an interesting read. It includes a section on pushback on the term by Russia.

Russian television presenter Tina Kandelaki, who supported Russia's war against Ukraine,[99][100] criticized Wikipedia's use of the term "Rashism" on her Telegram channel, accusing Wikipedia of "digital fascism" targeting Russian people and calling Russians to stop using it.[101]

Russia's federal censor Roskomnadzor reportedly ordered the English Wikipedia on 18 May 2022 to take down the articles "Rashism" and "2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine", asserting that they contain false information about the war the Russian government calls a "special military operation".[102][103]

On 20 May 2022, during the show Evening with Vladimir Solovyov, the host Vladimir Solovyov and his panelists responded with outrage at Timothy D. Snyder's article "We Should Say It. Russia Is Fascist", an article which according to Russian media watchdog Julia Davis has "spread through Russian state media like wildfire". Solovyov attacked Snyder by calling him a "pseudo-professor of a pseudo-university [...] He is simply a liar", and, addressing Americans, stating: "Let me tell you a secret: first of all, your signs are idiotic in their nature. Secondly, looking at your listed indications, how are they any different from the election campaign of Donald Trump?"

The first reference in the text you selected to include in the comment is to a March 2022 article at VoxUkraine which describes itself as:

We are an independent analytical platform. We help Ukraine move into the future. We focus on economics, governance, social developments and reforms. Neither parties nor oligarchs support us. Quality of our materials is ensured by the editorial process.

Who are our clients?

For citizens and institutions striving for systemic change. We work for people who trust the facts and analytical approach. For everyone who wants to live in modern Ukraine, a part of the global world.

The second reference is to an April 2022 article archived from Radio Free Europe which Wikipedia describes as

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is a United States government funded organization that broadcasts and reports news, information, and analysis to countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Caucasus, and the Middle East where it says that "the free flow of information is either banned by government authorities or not fully developed".

My opinion European citizens are at more risk of adverse consequences of economic instability and deindustrialization than Russian troops rolling through Poland. Which will be difficult to achieve if the Ukrainians are succeeding on the battlefield as you stated.

@studentofearth @studentofearth yeah not sure how he can honestly write how incompetent Russian military is and in the same breath be worried they will roll through Europe? I mean I haven't heard anything from Putin that he has any plans to do anything other than liberate the parts of the country that want it.
It was hard for me to accept when I finally realized that maybe the US were not the good guys. That was after 9/11 and WMDs. Sigh. It can be hard to let go. It doesn't mean Russia is good guys, just that in this instance perhaps US has gone too far. Everyone has a breaking point.

@Crazytimes conflict. It is definitely not the United States political and military leadership. They have created a situation where many lives have been destroyed and unfortunately it continues.

In this process we probably lost the belief of many of the worlds citizens that United States is a responsible world leader and a place of democracy, individual rights and a healthy prosperous life for its residents. Once trust is gone it is very hard to get it back, sometimes impossible.

For whatever reason this contribution from Martyanov really spoke to me.

The MSM propaganda machine has churned up a Major Victory out of Russia withdrawing from Krasny-Liman.

This is like speaking about a withdrawal from a tiny suburb of Chicago NOT Chicago.

Russia has secured a giant swath of the former UKR.

Fine, focus on a tiny suburban area.

The MSM has little to no idea or will not acknowledge what Russia is actually doing and why.

Hi all, Hey LO! Hope all are well.

We are in the 'need rain bad' category here too LO... Without heavy watering our little flower garden would not be much this year. The Tropical Sage (a Salvia) is past peak, as is the non-native Lantana (my eco crime). About 300-400 heads of a Blue Mistflower Eupatorium are going great so we have butterflies to watch. Twenty species one day last week around porch. They are immigrants from Mexico generally, every fall a migration northward takes place. Some years it is millions of butterflies moving north into south Texas. Since the drought it has been much-reduced the last few years. There have though been days this week with thousands of Snout passing SW to NE, chasing hackberries to lay eggs on. In birds the migratory neotropical songbirds have mostly departed southward now. Waiting for the species that winter here to show up now.

Just a quick hit and run... someone probably posted this already, apologies if so, I had missed it.

I read a post by Patrick Lawrence from scheerpost.com.this morning. Long read, but he makes the point that in 1945, we achieved the No. 1 spot, and could simply stop thinking and take it for granted. Now that we are knocked off the perch, we desperately need leaders who can think, plan, and organize the US to find its' new place in the world. His sad realization is that our political system does not produce true thinkers.
I doubt any politician would even acknowledge we are no longer a first world, developed country. The closest we came to that was Trump and MAGA.
Not that the goofball had any rational plan, but at least Trump said it aloud.

@Lookout contemplating a civilization in decline. My position is actually controversial. From a piece I wrote for the forthcoming issue of Capitalism Nature Socialism:

The downward trend in civilization does not appear to have been mitigated by the consolidation of a global financial elite which thinks it can run the world better than anyone else. Nor are social problems any closer to solution as notions of social progress which can improve upon the models of the neoliberal world order are discarded. One can easily imagine that, as governments are buffeted by crises of their own making, the future will appear as an escalating set of blowbacks from elite cluelessness.
