Friday Night Photos Damsels and Dragons Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
My apologies for anybody that was hoping to see damsels in distress being menaced by fire breathing dragons. Unfortunately all I have tonight are Damselflies and Dragonflies.
To tell the difference between Damselflies and Dragonflies, Damselflies are smaller and have two wings which they fold back along their body when not in flight and Dragonflies have four wings that are always outstretched even when not in flight.

Never realized there were so many varieties of these winged critters.
Saw a flock of them a little while back, swooping at dusk, like swallows.
Assumed they were gulping down gnats on their flits.
Your focus on their eyes is amazing. Wonder if they see in 3D? All of those
lenses must be a ferocious fractal on their occipital ganglion.

Yes, they are Kereru (Wood Pigeon). They might be bigger than any pigeons you've seen?
Kererū can measure up to 51 cm from tail to beak, and weigh about 650 gr = 21 in. long and 1 1/2 lbs. They almost became extinct as they were a good meal catch.

Hi Janis! GREAT photos... Pansies and 'pigeons in palm'. Wonderful. Those are some beautiful big beefy pigeons ya got there. I ate squab at a fancyish restaurant in Boston once. Not Loch-Ober, but we ate there too.
Funny, 'pansy' was commonly used for the word 'sissy', when I was a kid growing up.

Just the other day my Kiwi neighbour said the same thing ... that his memory was that pansy was another name for sissy. Pansies have a bad rap in the English language.
On the other hand, there are hardly any other flowers that are robust enough to endure the winter.

OUTSTANDING ode photos SP! You know how I love 'em. Beautiful work, great shots! I know a few guys that are the ones whose ode photos get in the guides... yours are great!
Odes is what folks that study them call Odonata. Which is the order which dragonflies and damselflies are in. The toothy ones. Flying dragons, if you are a gnat or skeeter. Some eat other dragons, and I have seen them take large butterflies.
The unknown damselfly is also a Rambur's Forktail. There can be two color morphs on some species of damselflies, in females. Gynomorphic and andromorphic, andromorphic appearing in color like a male. The gynomorphic female is differently colored than a male. These with the red sides are immature gynomorphic females, which lose the red and turn more yellow when they mature.

I love dragonflies, and have quite a collection of photos.
Once on a field trip of science docents at Fermilab, we went on a dragonfly training. We were taught how to hold a dragonfly gently by its wings on one side. I held a large green one, who decided to let me know that he needed to move on. He "scraped" my finger with his lower jaw. It didn't hurt, but I could feel it. It was kind of a cool feeling.
To this day you can still see a small mark on the side of my finger.
