Hey, good morning
Doing a search this morning I found the US tax code AKA
Title 26 of the CFR (code of federal regulations) to be
6,871 pages long. One could argue that it is unnecessarily
over-complicated. But it keeps tax lawyers in business.
I do not envy my accountant's task in keeping abreast of
the yearly changes. It must be daunting. We keep up with
our bookwork (for the most part) during the year and submit
the spreadsheets for review usually in March. This year we will
have 2 refunds and one payment due. (fed plus 2 states). Not
large amounts but enough to cover the accounting bill.
Hope you are not scrambling to beat the midnight deadline or
have filed for an extension instead. Happy filing!

This presupposes JD Vance and a majority of the cabinet would follow recommendations

I sent in my tax return Monday, told the accountant to just rollover the refund for next year.
As Trump cuts IRS staffing for the few areas of the agency that actually help tax payers, he kept on the thousands of armed IRS enforcers. At the same time, The Epstein Class enjoys the lowest tax rate in our history.
At the end of the day, we tax payers are funding mass murders in various foreign countries.

were deposited. So I can pay the bills.
Remember the (old?) form 1040EZ which basically
suggested: How much money did you make last year?
OK, send it in. Gave rise to HR Block, Intuit and other tax
'services'. Last time I tried the software approach, the print-out
was about 30 pages long. Never again. Better left to the professionals.
Maybe AI could do it swifter, but I prefer dealing with humans.

...wants you to do your taxes in the cloud. You can't buy it retail on a stick D drive anymore. I had used it for years. Download it, if you insist. But it won't download data on windows 10 computers. In fact, it won't read your return from the prior year without Windows 11, and completely destroyed my 2024 return as far as I could tell. That forced me to go online to the government website to find data from last year's return.
The full instructions and inputs for the primary residence capital gain exclusion/deduction were missing from Brand X personal income tax software. I ended up filling out the forms manually after downloading them from the IRS site.
I used snail mail to file. Never again, as they say. Nothing but trouble from the software that used to make my tax returns easier and much less time consuming.

The obstacles put in place are not for 'ease of use' or
'user friendly' purposes. It is more the opposite. In other
words - make it as complicated as possible.
Used Turbo Tax for years without too much trouble.
Then something changed and enshitification ensued.
The IRS already knows what we make and what deductions
are allowable in our brackets. The rest is almost like a patience
test. Kudos to you for plowing ahead on your own.

Couldn’t find such a questionnaire on irs.gov so wonder how you searched. Closest I get is minimum estimated tax requirement for paying estimated taxes.

Will keep this handy for next year. I used TurboTax for many years, but paid a CPA this year for a couple reasons. I didn’t owe any taxes so naturally wondered if I’d paid him unnecessarily. However, as is usual for me in any such cases, my income passed over the minimum just enough that I did need to submit the forms.
It appears to me that I would’ve owed taxes if it weren’t for Trump’s new $6,000 deduction for seniors. Maybe somebody can correct me on this, I sure hate to be grateful to him for anything.
