09/19 - Talk Like a (Disney) Pirate Day, Jenny
It is Talk Like a (Disney) Pirate Day, Jenny. The whole phenomenon of ARRRR as being "pirate talk" is clarly a Disney thing. I have read some of the extant writings of several actual pirates and they were quite articulate. It has been alleged that ARRRRR isn't too farfetched because the actor who gave us that vocalization simply exaggerated a Cornwall and many pirates came from that locale (or was it that many from that locale became pirates?). I seriously doubt any Spanish, French, Portuguese or Durch pirates were from Cornwall, or even spoke English, let alone the Barbary Pirates and those from Asia and Africa. Today's pirates who engage in maritime piracy are predominantly NOT from Cornwall, and most of todays pirates are not mariners but bankers, brokers, realtors and such and certainly don't use locutions such as ARRRRR.
Yes, as through this world I've wandered
I've seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.
~~ W. Guthrie
It is the anniversary of the 1676 burning of Jamestown by its colonizists in Bacon's Rebellion. Often cast as an early revolutionary rebellion against the British crown, this was really a rebellion against the local government's refusal to sanction the extirpation of all of the indigenous population of Virginia by the colonists.
It is also the anniversary of the exceedingly bizarre death of Giles Corey in 1692. He was accused of being a wizard. The standard routine was for such persons to plead one way or the other to the charge, whereupon they would be tried, convicted and hanged, with their possessions and estate passing to the local government. Mr. Corey chose not to plead which meant that they could not try him and therefore could not find him guilty, hang him and steal seize his property, which would then pass to his sons. The standard remedy for this behavior was to "press" the victim accused until he or she entered an plea and then proceed to the trial and hanging.
Pressing involved placing the victim accused naked on their back with heavy planks atop their body. Heavy stones were then piled upon said planks until the Victim accused made their plea and then it was on to the trial and hanging. Each time they paused to ask Mr. Corey to plead, however, he simply said "more weight" and so, in the fullness of time, they crushed the life out of him without a trial, allowing his estate to pass to his sons and really pissing off the savage rat-bastid christers who had tortured him to death
Aaand finally, we come to the anniversary of the death of Mary Jemison in 1833. She had been captured and adopted by the Seneca as a young girl and became fully assimilated into their culture. She went through two indigenous husbands and had seven children from them. She became known as the White Woman of the Genesee and when provided with the opportunity to "return to civilization", she contemplated the life of the average colonial woman and decided to remain an indian.
It is also the anniversary of a 2019 drone strike that killed 30 civilians in Afghanistan, but I don't see why this is at all noteworthy. That's at best a tiny fraction of the civilians killed in either Afghanistan or in drone strikes and I doubt it ia the largest civilian death toll from one of our strikes either. Sounds to me like just another day in our Greed-based War On Target peoples.

Good morning...
I'm not much of an opera fan, but this episode is mildly entertaining.
I am the very Model of a Modern Major General - Pirates of Penzance (1983)
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXf0o2d-W5w]
The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera from 1879 by Gilbert & Sullivan. This clip is from the 1983 film adaptation of the opera, starring the cast of the Broadway production:
Major General Stanley - George Rose
The Pirate King - Kevin Kline
Frederic - Rex Smith
Mabel - Linda Ronstadt
The Corey and Jemison stories were interesting.
Hope you all have a good day, and thanks for the OT.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
The clarification of historical themes is enlightening
As in the Jamestown, wizard hunt and naturalized Genesee woman stories. How much of history
is modified to present a white-washed version?
Hoping EL enjoys their excursion!

Another take on the pirate profession.

Oh my those WEF guys are devious
I never voted for any of the guys and gals in that evil organization nor did I vote for the people who trying to implement their plan. Destroying the working guts of America should be considered treason especially because the government is working against the people they’re hired to represent.

It becomes more obvious as time passes
the pols we 'elect' are not running the show at all. They are quite fat and happy to let the
rulers dictate their positions and none of the so called rulers do we have the option to vote
for or against. We can scream and protest about our needs and priorities, but it comes to
naught. The contrived hot button issues - race, gender, R vs. D, religion etc. are only used
to distract us from this notion.
Thanks for commenting!

That’s true
And very few have spilled the beans on it. Massie did when he said that congress doesn’t write their own bills anymore, but gets them handed to them from lobbyists and that Pelosi guard dawgs the house from debating the bills. How many times have we read that congress got a 5,000 page bill with only hours to read it? The reason more aren’t speaking up about it is that they are getting paid too much not to. Congress legalized bribery the same way they legalized insider trading.

ARRRRR, I missed it again!
What makes you so certain it started with Disney?
Be great if they did, though....
