Friday Night Photos Rainy Day Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Please post any photos, memes, or music you like.

When I was young my dad would often say save a little for a rainy day. So following my dads advice I saved photos taken months ago for a time I would need them for FNP. Funny thing is I expected that rainy day would come during the winter and not in the middle of summer. Not that I'm complaining mind you. We need all the rain we can get and it's a nice break from the excessive heat we've had for the last week.

Orchids are such an ethereal composition

Remember my neighbor in Ann Arbor cultivated those alien beasts.
Whenever it rained, would swing by to admire their moods, almost
like they were looking back at me. Some with a frown, some with a wink,
some even smiled! I listened as she spoke with them. Amazing!

The peak is kinda hidden by the clouds. You can probably tell that I love to take photos with trails in them. And for the reason you said. You can see why Xmas meadows is my favorite spot up there. But there are tons of other places on the road to camp but they are usually more packed with people. Here there are so many spots where it feels like I’m the only one there. Except for all the dune buggies with their Trump flags…

I did think of you last time I was there in the midst of the aspen. I’m excited to go back when they are in their yellow colors. I found this one already turning and I must start taking my real camera to capture the area.

I think the phone limits how I can take photos. This is just to document the change. I have lots of outstanding photos from years past but many are on slides. I’ve been going there for over 30 years.

Hi all, Hey SP! Awesome Orchid photos! What flowers they are... incredible. One never forgets their first orchid show.

Congrats on the rain! Hope it puts out the fires! That Hemet one looks bad. I'm sure birders were out at Pt. Loma seawatching today, and will be tomorrow to see if anything got blown up. Tonight just before dark a guy had 4 Magnificent Frigatebird going north past the Newport Pier. No doubt storm-blown birds. Could get some going back south on coast tomorrow. Maybe some boobies with some luck.

It must be exciting for you to connect with the spotting of other birders and fishers.

I spent some time reading about Frigate birds, who I often saw in Hawaii, but knew little about. They are a fascinating bird.

The duration of parental care in frigatebirds is among the longest for birds ...

The frigate bird appears on the national Flag of Kiribati. The design is based on its former colonial Gilbert and Ellice Islands coat of arms. The bird also appears on the flag of Barbuda, and is the national bird of Antigua and Barbuda.[70]
The great frigatebird was venerated by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island; carvings of the birdman Tangata manu depict him with the characteristic hooked beak and throat pouch.[72] Its incorporation into local ceremonies suggests that the now-vanished species was extant there between the 1800s and 1860s.[73]

Maritime folklore around the time of European contact with the Americas held that frigatebirds were birds of good omen as their presence meant land was near.[43]

@janis b yeah Janis they are amazing... In summer you can get them along the US Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida, and some years some get up into socal. There are a few species worldwide. Neat they are on flags, and no wonder they are revered. They are tropical only barely getting into semi-tropical areas. In places where people fish they can become tame. I remember the fisherman throwing fish up to them on the beach at San Blas Nayarit Mexico. Standing under a dozen of them diving at a fish right over your head is something you will remember.

Those photos were like a breath of fresh air I didn't know I needed. We were lucky enough many years ago to be invited by our Thai neighbor to travel to Thailand with them to visit family and go on a month-long tour. That was a life changing trip. One of the places we spent some time at was the Queen's Garden in Northern Thailand. Acres of beauty with orchids growing everywhere naturally, almost like weeds. When we visited, it was slightly misty, even foggy in places, but still warm, tropical but not the high-humid heat. Just absolutely fabulous. So your pics brought back those memories too.

Here in the Willamette valley of Oregon, the winds have shifted and are blowing in from the east. We've been extremely lucky so far this year and have been spared the smoke from wildfires. But today it is all back. Not yet as bad as it has been but the smoke is near hazardous, the sun is a faint orange blob, and ash is starting to fall pretty heavily.

So yeah, those orchids are a blessing. I can feel the mist on my face. Thanks SP, and best to all!

edited to add: and thanks for the Deodato. I had it playing in the background while I was reading through and kind of came out of a trance and thought: damn, that bass player... I went and checked. Yep, Stanley Clarke. Many other top notch musicians on that recording I gather. At this point, I just pat myself on the back for noticing. Cheers.

I'm glad the orchids brought back good memories of your trip to Thailand.
I remember the sun being an orange blob from wildfire smoke and everything being covered in ashes. The fire came close enough that we had to evacuate the neighborhood for three days. Not a fun experience. Thankfully there have been no large wildfires here in the San Diego area so far this year.
