Open Thread WE 24 AUG 22 ~ Co-ops
But in reality, the search of beauty and the idea of a number capable of reflecting by itself the harmony of perfect proportions, the balance, the equilibrium and the materialization of optimum dimensions; that is, a number that embodies the paragon of all virtue, becomes, at the very least, a very tempting one. -- RAFAEL ARAUJO
Having this apprehension about the coming collapse of the US financial system and ways to
work around it. The idea of local co-ops popped into my head. Organize the businesses, sole proprietors and individuals to establish a barter exchange before the dollar melts down to
semi-worthless paper strips. It is perhaps a pie-in-the sky illusion, but am working on setting it up
nonetheless. Here are some of the bullet points of the concept..
- a cooperative exchange of goods and services
- minimize use of money, encourage bartering
- how to value barter exchange rates?
- register as a non-profit
- advertising with flyers and posters
- electronic presence - phone, email, website
- physical presence? brick and mortar - cost
- organization and record keeping
- permits and other legalities
- how to convince potential participants of the benefits
Would be interested in hearing from y'all on key points to work on. Today will be taking a 65 Oyster out for a sail training with the newish owners. So I won't be here to respond until later. Please do not restrict your comments to this particular subject. Everything is fair game.

Coops are the way to go...
with shared profit, labor, and input.
Each business would need a different approach depending on location, product, resources, and participants. From my view they would need to evolve as members all add in their needs, skills, and backgrounds.
On another subject. I heard a very interesting interview with a person with a varied background including as a Maine and NE fisherman that I think you would enjoy QMS (and others) (33 min)

In 2021 Chris sat down with his mentor and long-time friend, Peter Gallant, to discuss the state of the world and how to truly live in it.
Have a nice sail!
Edit to add a coop resource...

Rebecca Solnit
wrote a book about how people can react in disasters called A Paradise Built In Hell.
I think it's germane to your topic. Here she is in an interview. It's long (about an hour) but there are many good parts. If you have the time I think it is worth it.
The statement seems to lack credibility. HAH!
There are numerous other examples but you get the idea.
Thanks for the Twitter examples
500,000 more would be worth it.

Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.
I would include Finland's Sanna Marin
But even more than joining an expanding imperialist military project, her government is in talks with Estonia to coordinate a missile system against Russian naval vessels in the Baltic Sea. Watching Western leaders and pundits speak about Russian military, they seem to have this assumption that the Russians can't or won't shoot back. As if the Russians are ISIS or the Taliban armed only with small arms.
Don't care about her party life but given Finland now is on a war footing with Russia, better to work 24/7 ensuring bunkers, first responder infrastructure, air defense against Mach 10 Russian missiles, etc.
Finland is joining NATO...perhaps, but Türkiye...
holds the cards, and so far Finland nor Sweden is complying to their demands.
So as always we'll see what we see. Türkiye would be doing them a favor if they refuse their vote.

In 2016 during questions by parliment (nationally broadcast)
Then PM Theresa May was asked if she would be willing to "kill 100,000 Russian civilians with a nuclear first strike", May did not allow the questioner to finish his question, yelling an orgasmic, "YES!" The possible reason for the question: a week before a Royal Navy submarine announced a "failed missile test". I have always believed that the sub actually refused to launch a first strike. May took the next opportunity to leave office. (I think there was some scandal but I don't really remember) This was closely after Hillary made a similar (though much less impassioned) statement, which in hindsight was the beginning of the Russiagate hoax.

It is not one bit surprising that the US is sending more $$$ to

Freedom loving Ukrainians.
Lots of weapons, but lots of Ukrainian soldiers?
I have no idea if this is authentic.
I am sure that more evidence will be found.
Just saying hallo to you all, I am logged in
and the reason why I was not before, is the typical mimi dumbness. I should have understood that a password which starts with an asterixs actually needs to be put in with an *.
Wonder oh wonder, will I ever get a little smarter? Thanks JtC. Now I can bother you with my idiocies.
Mimis never get smarter. Sigh. But I made it for now. Yippies.
ok, my 64 million question for tonight. Whom do you hate/love more, Putin or Selensky? I can"t listen to any of the two. And I think Germany has a lot of dumbfucks among them. So I ignore all of them.
Have a good evening, all, and thanks for still being here.
Don't give up and stick together. We need to stick together and resent all dumbfuckery. Amen. If eyo is sill healthy enough tell her I am thinking of her and pray for her health.
be well all,
Amen.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Good afternoon QMS, running a bit late here.
Actual coops have some positive tax implications you might explore and barter exchanges have some negative ones you really need to investigate. the of a multi-industry/business consumers or producers cooperative is fascinating - I think Spain had some, probably in Barcelona in between the wars.

Many details to work out here, but that's how we learn I guess.
Hiring a yung-un to navigate the electronic frontier (actually bartering her time)
as this old dinosaur is a bit beyond that curve. It's a start.
cheers!
