Citizen shot active shooter who had a long rifle and extra magazines at a shopping mall food court.

https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-shooter-at-indiana-shopping-mall-...

"The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began," Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said.

The Post Millennial is what came up in my twitter feed, I don't follow them. They are a "conservative" Canadian source.

Long gun is LEO speak for any shotgun or rifle. With detachable mags I'd think some sort of semi auto. The AP last week nixed the use of "assault weapon or assault rifle" from their stories according to their style book. Loaded term that is almost always incorrect.

caught the story this evening.

Gunman Kills Three in Indiana Mall Shooting, Citizen with Handgun Kills Shooter July 17, 2022

Ison stated that he will hold another press conference tomorrow. He praised not only his office but called the “real hero” the citizen who stopped the shooting. He did not reveal the civilian’s name but said he was a 22-year-old male from Bartholomew County, just south of Greenwood.

Indiana recently passed a law, allowing most citizens to conceal carry handguns in public without getting a license. Police are also not allowed to ask anyone they see carrying a gun for their license and no criminal background checks are required. That law went into effect on July 1.
The rifle used by the gunman has been described as a “long gun,” but no other details were provided.
That the shooter was stopped by a civilian instantly started a debate over the efficacy of the second amendment.

Ironically I started regularly checking the Sputnik feed after noticing several years ago significant regional news would show up several days sometimes before local and US national news sites.

I never knew that the term "Never Again" only pertained to
those born Jewish

"Antisemite used to be someone who didn't like Jews
now it's someone who Jews don't like"

Heard from Margaret Kimberley

And it looks like a FoxNews station, several regional papers, as well as The Guardian have picked it up, so I don't think it will be buried.

It looks like this "good guy with a gun" was in the right place at the right time and responded quickly and accurately to this single shooter. That could have been very much worse. They are a hero. I am glad too, that the situation didn't turn out bad for the good guy. Who knows what would have happened if there happened to be another good guy with a gun a few aisles over. Or, as has happened before, the cops show up and can't tell who is who.

To be clear, I grew up in the country in Texas. We used guns from a very young age to protect our livestock (very rarely needed where we were) and to harvest 3-4 deer a year. We also occasionally leased a back part of land as a "deer lease". So...lets just say my experience of city folks with guns is..not good. The idea that some have that everyone should be carrying? Just imagine going into a walmart or sam's when you know that most folks are carrying. And, most of them have very little common sense and no training. I am not going into that store.

Similar feelings were expressed over fifty years ago, by a Viet Nam vet friends of mine in Vermont who refused to hunt early in the season due to the number of out of state “sports” who arrived and would shoot at anything that moved. He said he felt safer patrolling the Ho Chi Minh trail than he did on opening day of hunting season.

CO is an open carry state. I regard anyone who does so without also carrying a badge as an existential threat: the only reason one would do that is with an explicit chip on the shoulder and a de facto intent to kill. If I encounter such a person, I leave the premesis immediately. I do not want to be there when their expressly-desired crossfire starts. And our wonderful CO cops are masters of the art of overkill, so when the shooting starts, it won't stop for a long, long time.

I've left a bunch of shopping carts, and a couple nice meals, as a result of this policy.

I can't do anything about concealed carry- but those folks have had some level of training to obtain their CCP (at least in this state) and aren't openly advertising their willingness and desire to instantly annihilate whoever dares to offend them. They worry me a great deal less, for some reason. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Twice bitten, permanently shy.

Saw this on the local news this morning out of Pensacola. Had an experience with some kind of "gun nut" in Walmart a few months ago. My son and I were looking at shotguns to see what they were going for. A man walked up in desert camouflage opining about how Walmart does not sell ammo anymore. He proceeded to tell us about some "blacks from Atlanta" and how he had to draw on them. This man was probably close to 70. We both said afterwards that we believed he was carrying by the way he was acting.

Propaganda sources?

Seriously, I do not understand what you are trying to communicate with this thread. Most of the rest of your stuff is comprehensible, if extremely contentious and belligerent. Examples on request.

But do you believe that the editors of the national TV and cable networks, the NY Times and the Washington Post as well as the major news "services" like the AP and Reuters suppress some stories for their own reasons?

If not, what are you trying to say? I might agree with you on this one.

@fire with fire
I accidentally caught the original title of this post, which was merely factual.

This current title suggests that gun advocates are an oppressed minority, and ’Murika is all about the oppressed, y’know. /s

“We may not be able to change the system, but we can make the system irrelevant in our lives and in the lives of those around us.”—John Beckett

The Good Samaritan may face a felony charge for having a gun in a mall where they are strictly prohibited.
Growing up, and especially dealing with family violence and a lots of meth heads, it is just not that uncommon for a neighbor or friend to grab a gun and threaten or shoot someone to protect another. It is what you are supposed to do, if you can. I have fired off a rifle to protect my first husband, who had been injured by the perp. I was legal to do so. He ran instead of sticking around. I took a pistol from a man about to shoot my friend, held it on him until the sheriff arrived. It was in a bar, and the guy packing the pistol knew he was not legal to have a gun on the premises. He was an FBI agent. The gun was returned to him, and he used it to blow his brains out.
My Dad observed a teenager being beaten by a constable. My Dad took his pistol from him, just as he was drawing it to shoot the teen, and knocked his ass out cold with it. Nobody filed charges against my Dad.
These kinds of incidences get blown out of proportion so everyone can argue gun control and so on.
Things like this happen every day, all day long, all over the US. I just recounted 3 incidences involving myself and my family. None made the news.
Before it is over and done, news will get out that the 20 yr old white guy had fantasies of killing Hispanics, and that he was a person known to the FBI, as the murderers like him always are.
Nothing will change about gun control, and nothing will be done about the FBI always spending too much time watching, and doing nothing to prevent crimes of this nature. Nothing will be done about the likelihood that the 20 yr old was taking psyche meds. And this will only be news until the next one.
edit: forgot incident number 4. My somewhat nutty uncle, prone to violence, time in a mental hospital occasionally, got drunk, came to my parent's home to kill everyone. Occupants that afternoon were my brother, his gf, his 5 yr old son, me, Mom, and Dad. Uncle shot into a couple windows, my Dad managed to slip through the woods to get behind him, my brother shot thru a window. They both hit him with non-lethal hits at the same time, on signal. The cops came, and didn't seem to notice he was reaching for his gun with his injured hand, so I stepped on his hand, got the pistol, gave it to the cops. This did not make the news. My Dad and brother were not charged with a crime. I can't emphasize enough, these things happen. To those of us who have lived the life, we find it very ho hum news.

who was holding a toy rifle and a the cops were called on him and the first cop turned the corner of the isle and saw him and then shot him. The guy ran around the corner, cop caught up with him and finished the job. But then lots of white men go into Walmart carrying real guns and nothing happened to them. Strange set of rules in America.
