We've been out harvesting the first of the blueberries...it will be a daily chore for the next few weeks. Last year a late frost decimated the crop, but this year looks about average.
I bought some beautiful strawberries from Calif. yesterday at trade day - 2 lbs for $2.50. I can't understand the system that can produce and ship berries for that kind of price. Strawberries hold on to pesticides and should be soaked for an hour. I prefer organic, but for that price I can manage to soak and dry.
Well we made it to summer, and the days will start to shorten. Not really noticeably, but relentlessly from now till late December. Glad you've got a breath of cool air. We had 60's three mornings in a row that was delightful, and even a mild 70 F this morning...not bad for berry picking. I took advantage and cranked up the oven to cook bacon...learned the trick of oven cooked bacon from the lunchroom folks at school. Got a couple of ripe tomatoes and an avocado to go with the bacon and a couple of fried eggs.

That is a good trick to know
about soaking the berries. I paid $10 a quart for local strawberries here. Made 7 pints of jam, so
can enjoy them thru-out the year. Working on the final jar from last year now. Mmm, blueberry
pancakes we made yesterday. The wild Maine blueberries are really good up here, but still too
early to go picking.
Also like the baking bacon trick. Find it useful when doing a large batch.
Finally got the kayaks in the water yesterday, calm winds made for a nice paddle. Didn't bring the
little sailboat up this year due to the broken foot issue. Kinda miss it though.
A funny side note. Once went into a local diner near here. On the menu was offered a lobster and
blueberry pizza. Ha! Made for the touristas no doubt. I don't see the combo working too well.

QMS, I remember you had a foot issue, didn't remember it being broken. If you don't aggravate it, 6 weeks will mend it. I hope for your foot, time flies.

I learned to trim bacon fat quickly and easily by using a pair of sharp kitchen scissors. Just yesterday at the office, I oven-baked bacon to eat with a tomato for lunch. I quit frying it years ago.
I did not know about soaking strawberries. From now on, organic, or soak.
A friend had a prolific fig tree. In trying to figure out how not to waste them, she topped a pizza with them. It was great! Maybe the touristy toppings might be worth a taste.
I am nibbling on a delicious watermelon. My trick with all melons is to wash the skin with soap and water before I cut it with a knife. Same with avocados. Any bacteria on the skin attaches to the knife, then winds up in the fruit. I got extremely ill from a cantaloupe.
Enjoy your trip. I have a trial this afternoon that could easily become nasty.

What a sight!
Our fun is watching a bald female cardinal at the feeder and bird bath. I worry her head, with skin of dark blue, is frying in this wretched Texas heat.
We have been seeing a male cardinal teaching food finding and eating skills to 2 fledglings. He is such a great Dad! We gave out extra seeds on Father's Day!

So good morning QMS et. y'all. Been catching
up a bit on old projects and paperwork and starting new stuff. Was thinning apples before it got too hot and it almost seems as if some are ripe, come right off in ones hand, but more likely too thirsty for good health. Nonetheless, some are already good sized and everything. Apricots are getting ripe and are also under attack by birds and squirrels. We also have a bumper crop of alligator lizards, they're everywhere. Hope they know to only eat the bad bugs and pass on the good ones.
I never knew about bakin' bacon, something I'll have to look into. Really early morning winter pastime I suspect. Currently thinking about grilling some in a shallow grill pan or the rimmed griddles I have for one of my grills. This is cook everything you can outside on the grill or butane one-burner time. Also instant pot and nuker. Just keep the oven and stove top off unless it's mild enough to fire them up and then eat outside. Will be grilling quesadillas for lunch - I've got a small slab of 3/16" Aluminum plate I use as a gringo comal for such purposes.
Third and final preliminary infusion tomorrow afternoon, and then, with luck, every eight weeks. At least it's a regular schedule so one can plan stuff.
