Friday Night Photos Wet Dream Edition

Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.

For those that reside in areas that have been flooding I hope you've all managed to stay high and dry. Too bad we can't channel all that flood water to areas suffering from drought.

Here's a few ocean dwelling critters from a visit to Birch Aquarium last Friday where I did manage to find Nemo.

If you're ever in the area, go there. I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a lone kiosk with the sole function of displaying this:

I've never been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Next time I'm in the Bay Area I'll drive over to Monterey and check it out.
Cool Plankton video.

Hi all, Hey SP! Hope it's all good out there!

GREAT photos, and one of my favorite songs. I love that vid. Have sent it out with a sales promotion once - LOL. Being a fish monger and all.

Outstanding photos of the jellies! What an amazing group of beasts they are.

Nice Sea Dragon, Is that Weedy or Leafy? There are actually a number of different types. There is a guy in Sri Lanka that tank raises them. They are highly protected CITES item so the captive bred ones can be imported no problem. A couple grand each, and 50 in a box, can I put you down for a box? I think yours is Weedy, Phyllopteryx taeniolatus.

Seahorses were common and cheap in the trade until 14 years ago or so when there were listed on Schedule II of CITES. Now you can hardly get them. Mostly tank raised only and expensive. The Chinese were selling 20 million metric tons of dried seahorses annually, the powder sold as an aphrodisiac. Another rhino horn deal because something sticks out in front, it will make you do the same... The CITES listing was the only way to stop that. Surely lots still goes on illegally, but the trade in wild animals is dead.

Below the Seahorses is a Naso Tang (Yellow Tang out of focus to right behind it). Yellow Tangs are a Hawai'i only endemic species, which mostly just closed down commercial aquarium fish collection recently, so they went from $20 to $200 and being smuggled. Naso lituratus is the main subject fish.

Then we have a Maroon Clown, technically not nemo, those are Percula or Ocellaris clowns and in a different genus (Amphiprion) than these. Maroon is an oddball clownfish really, Premna biaculeatus, almost all the other clown (aka anemonefish) fish are Amphiprion genus. The anemones are Rose Bubble Anemone, about a hun each, Entamacea quadricolor.

Then next is a Harlequin Tusk, tusks are a sub-group near wrasses. The blue teeth indicate the Australian variety, about $200 each now. Whaddafish! Got some in tanks in LA ready to ship now, operators are standing by.

Next is a Koran Angel in front and the real prize in the rear a Gem Tang. Mostly from Mauritius, I sold a number in the last year in the $500 ea. range, though I saw some on line in the U.K for TEN TIMES that. It is a highly prized fish. Spectacular photo.

Thanks for the fish! GREAT song!

Hope all are well! Y'all be that way, ya hear?

Thanks for the fish identification and accompanying info. Glad you liked the song. It's been a favorite of mine since I first heard it on the radio somewhere back in the 80's.

@Socialprogressive
on the Sunday evening Doctor Demento show!

When it comes to fish, I’ve always been partial to the stories about discovering the coelacanth — the “living fossil” of the lineage (lobe-finned fishes) from which all four-limbed animals (Tetrapoda) — amphibians, reptiles, and mammals like us — are descended.

Now there's a blast from the past. In the 70's I used to listen to the Doctors show followed by the King Biscuit Flour Hour on Sunday evenings.

@orlbucfan vinyl, cassette, and CD. One is a brilliant album by Shadowfax called Too Far To Whisper. The hit tune off of it, "What Goes Around," is just sublime. Great band!
