Open Thread - Thurs 03 Mar 2022 - Emily Who?

I hate to confess it; my inspiration has fled this week. Too much stress and it's not of a Ukrainian kind: taxes, interviewing caregivers for a relative with dementia, financial stuff for that relative, going over wills and other legal documents... yea, bye, bye, inspiration.
Therefore, here's a wee bit of history and a song that's been brain-worming me to accompany it. Emily Davison was a suffragette in England at the turn of the last century and a bit later. She was killed when she walked onto the track at the Derby in 1913 and was hit by the King's horse. She was 40. Prior to that she was arrested nine times, went on hunger strike 7 times, and was force fed 49 times. According to Wikipedia she was 'a staunch feminist and passionate Christian, and considered that socialism was a moral and political force for good'. She did not give an explanation to anyone before she walked onto that track. Some thought she committed suicide. Others thought she was trying to pin a suffragette banner to the horse. Maybe it was an accident, maybe she was made nuts by being force fed. Who knows really?
Video of the accident, yes, from 1913. The first comments are good.

Her death did what the forcefeeding, arrests, and more did not. It brought attention to the womens' rights movement in Great Britain. A year later in 1914, going into WWI, the British suspended the forced feeding, released all women hunger-strikers and declared an amnesty. Women contributed greatly to the forces gathered to fight WWI for the British, and after the war, in 1918, parliament passed an act granting the vote to women over 30 who passed certain property qualifications. In 1928 another act lowered that age to 21 and removed the property rules.
When I was a teenager I heard this song by Greg Kihn. I loved it, it intrigued me, maybe because of the strange, for pop music, beat. I love waltzes. So I went to the library (yea. no internet then!) and found out about Emily Davison. Why the heck he wrote this song, I dunno, but I'm grateful he did. This month I've been digitizing my album collection. The album this song is from is in that collection. Heard the song again and it went straight into my brain, like it had the first time.

So, enjoy the music, thanks for reading and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough!

Everything going as well as can be expected for y'all?
I sure hope so. In good news, the seeds I planted last week are now mostly seedlings (always takes the peppers a bit longer to come up). As usual, basil and lettuce were first out of the gates, basil is winning with the first set of true leaves already appearing. Lettuce is just behind, the true leaves are starting to form... tomatoes are sadly taking fourth place behind broccoli, which has it's seed leaves opened. Tomatoes are just stems with little leaf heads forming. I'll be by in the afternoon! Have fun with the open thread

One good thing about being so darned income restricted is, never having to file a tax return. Take all the time needed, drink herb tea, take frequent breaks, stretch, don't worry, relax. These things are known deep down,
right on
Speaking of nothing,
Neighbors frustrated by Santa Rosa’s inaction on large homeless camp
Huh? oh never mind.
Peace and Love
The article about the homeless camp
could be from some Seattle paper too. It's amazing how upset everyone is, and yet, they won't, even in Seattle, make enough places for the poor to live.
I keep filing a return because someday, maybe, I can get some help in putting solar on the farm and if so, supposedly I will get a break in my taxes. Thing is, I never pay taxes. I guess you could say I am 'land rich and cash poor'. Take care, and keep on keeping on!

This is what my right to vote has brought
Chicks voting is a nice sentiment. Kinda like chicks getting married, and then what? We get divorced like everyone else. Yay? Voting is for the bigs who can afford to bribe now, not for us little people. Cheep cheap. Hang on to your land as long as you can, never let it go.
Sixteen years owned by an "Affordable Housing Development Corp." and not even one permit applied for. But nazis okay!! Wine caves are filled with nazi sympathizers, who knew? I should have but did not. gut punch
Around 2010-11 I played a California Certified Tax Preparer. Then the state changed the rules and made it more expensive and more complicated to get certified, and that was that. If you enjoy it, the state will destroy it. That's the system.

under the radar
'If you enjoy it, the state will destroy it'
Ain't that the truth. Someday I'll do an OT about the rules and regulations that developed a bit after I started my small farm. They weren't about me, per se, but about all small farms. After all, we were taking pennies from the big boys. That's NOT ALLOWED.

Further
If you enjoy it, the state will destroy it ..
or tax it
or outlaw it
or charge you for it
or tag your fun as being a social piraña
or delegitimize you
in oh so many ways ..
Zionism is a social disease
England's suffragette movement
was quite the struggle. There was a great series, "Shoulder to Shoulder" telling the saga of the struggle, but it seems to have been largely disappeared.
Happy growing. Have a great day, and thanks for the OT!
Off to get my new star license, my old one has expired. Oh boy I can be better monitored from now on.
Edit to add: mission accomplished, in and out of the DL office in less than 10 min. Last time went, it was wait of almost an hour, so this was a breeze.
You can trust your Tsar when you carry the star...or something like that.

I'll bet the USPS delivers this evening, there have been many substitute carriers lately and it takes longer with new trainees and stuff. Yep, that's the story I'm sticking with. May all your seeds sprout and grow. right on

Shoulder to Shoulder
sounds like it was good. The Kihn song is dated to about the same time as the series, 1975 to 76 or so. Wonder if it inspired him? I dunno.
Someday soon I'm going to have to get a new DL license, I guess I can get the 'enhanced' kind, so I can fly on an airplane some day. Heh. Glad getting your star license was pretty easy!

You write an interesting OT
even when not inspired, Sima.
Very interesting history of the suffragettes in England. Not a part of history I knew or studied. Kudos.
I find myself taking care of someone every hour, on the hour. It sometimes wears me way, way down. And tax prep. Damn. I should have everything assembled this weekend so I can take it to the preparer on Monday.
Thanks for all you do for the OTs. Great effort, great result, Sima.

Taking care of someone that way
can be so stressful and tiring. Kudos to you for doing it. Tax prep drives me nuts sometimes. All the little dots and crosses to make and better do them right, or THEY WILL GET YOU! Or something
I'm glad you enjoyed this OT. My mind was too scattered to focus on what I had originally planned to write about (Roman Empire falls), so I went to my current earworm. Heh.
